Some items I noticed on Saturday: Pork belly, quail eggs, duck eggs, fresh beansprouts, fresh lemongrass, mint, cilantro, culatro, Thai basil, taro and jicama and purple potatoes, coconut, bok choy and cabbage, pork buns, bags of frozen shredded pork skin, fish cakes, bags of fresh refrigerated Pho noodles, frozen squid and shrimp and various shellfish and cuttlefish, at least a dozen brands of fish sauce (including Red Boat 40°N and MegaChef 30°N), shrimp flavored peanuts, frozen meatballs with tendon, dried shrimp, fresh papaya, frozen durian, fresh dragonfruit......... If the musty scent when you first walk in makes you nervous, don't worry; it fades quickly after you get used to it and, more importantly the foods and refrigerated cases are clean. I am unsure what this has to do with a supermarket. I then walked into the actual market and was surprised at how much smaller it looks than in the website. I also discovered as I began exploring that its "international" designation is a bit overstated. It does have food from one or two European countries but its mostly hispanic and really mostly Mexican. Was i a bit disappointed? Yes. That said, i did find a lot of food that my culture also loves in here that overlaps. Firstly, i found actual green plantains! Usually in the supermarkets near my home they sell plantains but they are rarely green. To be able to fry some up and have tostones! Yes!!!!! I also found other products my family and I would love including plantain chips, malta, yuca, tamales, Jamaican patties, and croquettas. The croquettas were of the frozen variety and sadly only in chicken, i prefer ham. I was also very happy when I found Pineapple Nectar for my mom. She loves the stuff and hasn't had any since we moved! So i did end up buying quite a bit when I came here and i will likely come back again. You can pick them yourself or buy them by the bag. They have fresh pressed apple cider if you like that. The small building has a definite country store feel.
