We tried in-home care but it was way too expensive (20K per month) and just was not viable for her. We looked all over the county for a good assisted living situation. So many of them were full, or had more or less than we needed. We finally found Harborview in my favorite neighborhood, of all places, and so I went to tour it. The person who does tours was not in, but another administrator Doris was happy to show me around. The home itself is a beautiful old Italianate mansion with gorgeous grounds and big beautiful windows. Amazing views across the harbor to Pt. Loma. They house only about 40 residents. I observed residents in the common areas, and all looked pretty content. There were two available private rooms, both clean and lovely. As I was leaving, the owner Jeff Settineri had arrived and took 30 minutes to talk to me about our situation with Mom. He was straightforward, and transparent and very empathetic and gave me all the info I needed. I discussed with my brothers and two days later we moved Mom over. She had a sunny downstairs room with a private entrance and lovely garden outside. It was a bit rough at first as we worked with the staff to get her established and comfortable, but pretty soon she was trustful of and happy to see her caregivers. Her hospice service visited several times a week. We were kept fully informed as to any changes or needs that arose. She had all her meals in her room and snacks, and plenty of walks outside in her wheelchair which she loved. There are lots of activities for the residents but she was a bit beyond being able to engage. Her caregivers were unfailingly sweet and patient and attentive to her and to us. Her meds were administered correctly, her laundry was done regularly and she was kept clean and comfortable. She was there for about six weeks, and she passed peacefully while resting one morning. Everyone was so awesome that day, knowing how hard it was for us. During that time, the staff became like family to us. We brought gifts and goodies to thank them and we still intend to visit occasionally. I can't say enough about the gracious care and respect my mom and our family got there. It is something I will be forever thankful for. Jeff, Genoveva, Doris, and all the staff, thank you. Highly recommend.

All four of us visited and toured several facilities both in Northern and Southern CA. We wanted to find a place for dad that we felt comfortable live in ourselves. Dad had been living in Northern CA for most of his life, so when my husband and I visited Cloisters (several times), and had met with Tia and other staff members, we felt that it would be the best fit for him, it was still a big leap of faith as it was major move for dad at such an advanced age. Now it has been 3+months and dad has fully adjusted to the facility, met new friends and very much enjoying his new home. Always greeting you with warm smile, Tia is the driving force that keeps everything going the right direction, but each and every person that we have had the pleasure of meeting so far have been caring, attentive and a joy to know. We usually visit dad twice a day every day, so we don't miss much. We would like to specially recognize Marlene who has been exceptionally careful when she is showering dad who had a foot surgery recently. Just last week we celebrated dad's 98th birthday with a cake for everyone at Cloisters. My favorite aspect of the facility is that every room has a view, and most rooms have a private patio access to an immaculately maintain garden brimming with roses, cannas, bougainvillea, many shady trees, hummingbirds and butterflies and many pollinators flitting about, that would cheer up the gloomiest of moods. Lastly I would like to add that I would personally like to live at cloisters when my time comes. Thank you Tia and Team for taking such good care of our dad as if he is your own.

What a gorgeous place to retire in! My friend's apartment is really stunning - very modern, spacious, and with high ceilings and a patio. The landscaping is beautiful; people can easily walk to the dining room or to one of the many activities they have; and if you become less mobile, they have golf carts that will pick you up. The also send meals to people's apartments if they are unable to walk. The chaplain was super cool; they have lectures and film screenings; and the food was pretty decent! The patio was lovely, and inside lots of people were dining with friends. They have a daily special and then a regular menu. We got the soup of the day first (potato leek) which was yummy, and then I had a decent mushroom swiss omelette. They didn't have Dijon mustard, but servers were very nice, and they unfold your napkins like you're in fine dining. My friend also loves the dog park, and the beautiful old trees on the property, and the views of the ocean and PB are stunning. And we saw friends of his along the way too, and he told me about some of the other very accomplished and interesting residents. Looks like a great place to retire if you can afford it! (though it is way up on a hill, so if you're driving yourself, be prepared for the way up to be winding).

A Truly Exceptional Skilled Nursing Facility…read more Our family is incredibly grateful for the outstanding care my dad received at this skilled nursing facility. From the moment he arrived, it was clear that the staff genuinely care about their patients. Every nurse, CNA, therapist, and team member showed warmth, kindness, and a level of compassion that created a true healing environment. What really stood out is how committed they are to helping patients maintain a sense of normalcy and dignity. They encouraged my dad to keep a daily routine--waking up, getting dressed, and enjoying his meals in the dining room rather than staying isolated in his room. That structure made a remarkable difference in his overall mood and recovery. The activities they offer are wonderful and thoughtfully planned. From bingo and painting to live music and social events, they keep the residents engaged, active, and connected. It's clear they put their hearts into making each day meaningful. Bottom line: they go above and beyond. This is, without question, the best skilled nursing facility we have experienced. Our family cannot recommend them highly enough.

Although they didn't say it out loud, we became aware that my husband was rejected because he required an extreme amount of time and resources to meet his needs. These SNFs were not willing to provide this level of care. Marionne, the head administrator at the Shores, gave us a chance. Even though we required more help than was available, Marionne made sure we had the resources we needed. I met Connie, the social worker, on the second day of my husband's stay. I had a very long list of things that my husband needed to survive his stay at any facility. As I expressed our needs, I expected Connie to lose interest and turn away. She did just the opposite. She took out a notebook and wrote down all that I needed. It was ALL accomplished the next day! Throughout our stay I would e-mail Connie concerns in the evening...things that my husband had confided to me. Almost always I would see the result the following day!!!!! Besides the administrative staff we encountered an OUTSTANDING nurse named Gigi. If we ever had a question or concern, we knew who to call!!! Last but not least, Elmer our CNA was a master at using the Hoyer lift!!! He would easily lift my husband and reposition him in half the time it took many others. Marionne once told me that they were not perfect . All I can say is if you have people like those mentioned who take pride in their work as these people do, you may not be perfect, but you are well on your way to getting there!
