Truffle Pasta

We were visiting various historical sites around Manila when we stopped in at 1919 Grand Cafe for an early lunch. The restaurant wasn't too busy at around 11 AM on a Monday, so we were seated pretty quickly at one of the tables upstairs. We enjoyed the comfy bench seating and appreciated the modern ambiance of the place. We split the truffle pasta, salt and pepper squid, and baked rice caldereta between 4 of us and were more than satisfied. Everything was so delicious!!! We weren't able to try any of the desserts or drinks, but next time I would love to try their taro cloud roll and Japanese cake.

After 2 yrs I'm back as promised! And it did not disappoint me. The serving was way bigger than before. Great service and friendly staff. Made a reservation this time to avoid wait time. I will be back again

First, I cook and I am good. Ordered crispy pork belly, superb crispness. Unfortunately, the dipping sauce is meh. Bland tasting, forgettable. Dipping sauce did not do justice to the crunchiness of the pork belly. Will go back but not to the pork belly.

Been meaning to visit this cafe since it opened, and fortunately, I finally found the time! I expected it to be somewhat like a Starbucks in an old 1900s bank with a little hint of a Great Gatsby theme. But what welcomed me as I walked through the enormous doors was nothing short of magnificent and way more elegant than what I was expecting. It was a restaurant more than it was a cafe. It is the classic version of UCC Clockwork (which proudly boasts its modern style.) During breakfast (7:00 - 11:00 AM), they offer rice meals with unlimited coffee and tea all for PHP 380. For the food, I got their Homemade Beef Tapa, (because of course, you have to choose the food that says homemade or specialty if you want to see their kitchen's strength!) The flavor was medium but the meat was very tender. It made me feel that it's one step up my usual tapa dish. I also had their Iced Caramel Macchiato. Now, I'm very picky with caramel drinks but I can safely say that I will for sure come back to have another Caramel Macchiato from there. The staff was courteous, friendly, accommodating, and always quick to their feet. A+ for customer service! The whole place was spotless as well. On the second floor, they have exclusive rooms that would be perfect for a group meeting. One of the rooms (Room Geisha) even has the original bank vault opened in it! Overall I would give this restaurant a high remark, and it most definitely deserves a ton more of customers. I'd suggest going here for group meetings may it be for work or for school. Also, if you want a nice, affordable, but sophisticated looking date spot you might want to bring your special someone here. I, for sure, will definitely come back!

After glancing over the menu, we placed our order and the food arrived just a few minutes later. Among the many dishes that we ordered, the xiao long bao (soup dumplings) were among my favorite. The food was fresh and perfectly seasoned, and the portions were generous. Each dish was only about ₽200-₽300 each - a bargain! If you ever find yourself in Manila's bustling Chinatown, be sure to stop by the Mezzanine Cafe to refill your tank!

We had the following items: -Lechon Kawali -Kiampong -Beef Wanton Soup -Miki Bihon Overall, I thought most of the items were fine, but not necessarily fantastic. The Kiampong and Beef Wanton Soup were probably my favorite dishes since they were unique and something you probably wouldn't find in typical Chinese menus. The Lechon Kawali was probably the most disappointing dish since I'd heard it was excellent and it tasted very basic to me. The ambiance is very casual and the service was not particularly attentive. I wasn't terribly impressed by Cafe Mezzanine, but it was fine. You should really go with a group of people so you can try many dishes to explore the various flavors...also, I'd suggest going for the Chinese-Filipino dishes since those are much more unique.

As a law student, finding a great coffee shop where I can hunker down and study in comfort is a…read moremust. Cafe-UK should be the poster child for the kind of place I'm talking about. Cafe-UK is one of those cafes that manages to establish it's own identity able to set itself apart from the generic or those that aspire to be a copycat of Starbucks. They have tea, coffee, juice, and a wide variety of American canned drinks that you won't find in your local grocery. There's a lot of food to choose from. They're a bit pricey, but the size and the taste will more than make up for it. Cafe UK has some of the best cakes I've ever had. Their cakes come in the form of a slice or a mini cake. I love the fact that they offer several kinds of cheesecake with the triple chocolate cheesecake being my favorite, I mean it's cheesecake and chocolate come on! Cafe UK is open 24 hours, and becomes a great places to study at around nine in the evening. Things are quiet at this hour up to around ten in the morning the following day, at which point it becomes a melting pot for the different students from the different schools that populate Mendiola. Wi-fi is free, which is probably another reason why so many students love to congregate at this awesome cafe. The biggest quirk that this cafe has that I don't find anywhere else are the free to use iPads. Never have I walked into a cafe that has free to use iPads, These iPads are ingeniously built into the table, I often find students spending a lot of their time drinking their orders and playing the latest games on Cafe UK's tablet. Free WiFi, excellent food and drinks, wonderful prompt service, and the tablets allows Cafe UK to deliver a great experience. Go for a visit sometime and I promise you that it'll be time and money well spent.

That's because most of them try to be something that they're not, which is of course Starbucks. Few cafes out there establish their own identity. Few cafes in Metro Manila can stand out from the competition without emulating Starbucks. Cafe UK is a part of the few. A local favorite among the people in P. Noval, Cafe UK never fails to draw a crowd each day. A crowd mostly made up of students. The students love it here. Great ambiance, good food and coffee, nice staff and free Wi-Fi are just a few of the reasons why this place has become a regular on many people's place to chill. I'm pretty sure the guy who owns this place knows his target market. I mean, the way this place feels and how it's setup is just so right for students. It's tailor made to appeal to that kind of demographic. The branch here in P. Noval looks a bit tight and cramped. What it lacks in floor area it makes up for with the number of floors. In a way though, I actually liked the cramped space of this cafe. It forces people to be close and conversations are more likely to be intimate and engaging that way. Cafe UK is sweet. It draws students are drawn to it like flies are to honey. A warning though, be sure to bring a jacket. The place can get really cold especially at night.

I figured no problem, since there was nothing to eat in the immediate area I figured ok, how often am I here anyways? I was ready to bite the bullet with the more expensive bill as it was a hotel, but figured at least I can look forward to a good meal. I was shown some hospitality by the manager and lead to my table, I checked the menu and true enough the price tags were a little crazy, but oh well. I was in the mood for adobo and fries, so I ordered those. It took awhile but finally it came. The fries was in a nice metal basket and was seasoned well, crunchy but fluffy on the inside. Pretty standard. The adobo came in two plates, one for the rice and the atsara (a side dish of pickled vegetables I believe) and then the pork and chicken adobo with egg and a lot of spring onion or such vegetable covering the top. The meat was admittedly soft and the sauce was nice and velvety, but that was all. The taste was very average, it was neither good nor bad, nothing noteworthy, and overall our home cooking would be better, so I was quite disappointed. The garlic rice was in between garlic rice and plain rice, it had hint of garlic but overall almost negligible. Real shame, it was on the edge of greatness, but could barely be saved by the adobo sauce. As the bill arrived, it reached quite an amount, but the server named Elle, asked if I was checked in as it would give me a much needed 20% discount, I thought for a second and realized a friend is checked in, maybe that would work? For sure Elle saw I was considering something but as she mentioned it had to be me, I did not insist and said no. After considering it again I call another waiter and inquire if it was my friend's room, he says: "Maybe sir, but how will she sign it?" after a second of thought he continues "Maybe you can just note her name and room number sir. Will ask." Ok worth asking and checking. Elle returns and says sorry sir I already had this cleared as I asked you if you were checked in. I responded, sorry I was not clear about it and figured my friend would work. She mentions but she must be here to sign, I responded that the other waiter gave me another option. Overall I reluctantly did not insist and just said, "Ok no problem, but please be clear about your questions next time, as it is such a waste." This is where she becomes very rude. She immediately says, "I did tell you." but in Filipino. I froze in place and looked at her, surprised that she had to have the last word and the tone she took was beyond disrespectful. Normally I have long patience for waiters as I realize it may have been a long day, perhaps they are tired maybe it is an off day. Who knows, I try to respect them and I am very courteous along with my generous tips, I always thought it was a give and take sort of relationship. But for Elle, she works in one of the most expensive and supposedly respected hotels in Manila, and she had this attitude. I'm sorry but I need to hold you to higher standards since you all have the audacity to charge me so much for your vaguely ok adobo (I wouldn't mind paying as much if it was actually drop dead delicious, but alas it was not). I called for her manager and complained, the same manager who sat me down unfortunately got an earful from me as her staff was quite rude, she offered a discount, but I declined saying I can afford the meal, but I expected better from you and your staff given that the Manila Hotel used to stand for quality, but now it is trash. And on top of that, don't think I did not notice the dead cockroach quietly sitting under another patron's seat my full meal. Jeez... Manila Hotel, what happened? I cringe at the idea of ever coming back and hope you all do better.
