After doing my cold diagnostic, I realized I have a long way to go and I don't have the confidence of getting to my target score on my own. I did some digging on r/LSAT and decided to reach out to Larkin from 180 degrees LSAT. The reasoning was very simple: he scored 180 himself, and he's one of the most expensive tutors out there, so I figured he must be decent.
I can say with confidence that working with Larkin has far exceeded my expectations. Unlike other tutors on the market (yes, I took consultations and pilot lessons with other tutors), Larkin has his own particular way of teaching. He teaches in a very Socratic way (which is exactly how law school teaches), and we would often spend a lot of time pondering over particular questions and really nailing down the nuances behind those questions. At first, I was skeptical of this approach, as sometimes we would only go over a few questions per session, and I felt like we weren't covering enough questions. However, my scores quickly started to improve at a massive pace, and I came to realize that understanding the reasoning behind the test and building critical thinking skills are far more important than doing a billion questions.
What impressed me the most was his profound understanding of the test. Most of the time I ask him a question on LR, he would immediately provide an explanation without even going over the stimulus, since he knows the tests so well and have done each questions so many times, he knows exactly what's going on with each question-the strength and weakness of the stimulus, the reason why the correct answer choice is correct and why the wrong answer choice is wrong. It is truly impressive to see someone having such a profound and deep understanding of the test.
His explanations of specific questions are so crystal clear that I hardly have any questions after his explanation. An appropriate analogy of this sudden enlightenment from his teachings is like being a blind person and suddenly gaining eyesight. Furthermore, his predictions are crazy accurate. In June, he brought up that I will prolly get a high 160s on the August exam, and that if I want to achieve a mid 170s, I should aim to meet twice a week. He also mentioned that because English is my second language, I will most likely be capped at a mid-170s, he was SPOT ON, I got a 173.
The only complaint I have with him is that he's not a super organized person, so there's no syllabus or developed curriculum working with him. We kinda just went over the questions I'm most confused with instead of tackling each question type. So I wouldn't necessarily recommend him to anyone who likes to study in a rigid, organized way.
Finally, Larkin is a super approachable person, and he genuinely cares about his students. The time I spent working with him felt enjoyable, and I have learned a great deal from him besides the actual exam. Overall, I would highly recommend Larkin to those considering working with a tutor; he is truly one of a kind, and it has been my pleasure knowing him. read more
