It gave me chills, to be honest.
The 2015 Fox Cities marathon in WI kicked off my 2nd round of marathons in the 50 states. I picked WI up here on Sunday, 9/20/2015 as soon as I crossed the finish line. It was a fabulous feeling! It was my 81st marathon / ultra distance race and just 5th one of 2015. It's becoming a slow year, I guess. This marathon had been on my radar for a while, as I have heard good things about it. As soon as the opportunity presented itself, I signed up for it and never looked back. Fox Cities marathon is somewhat a small race, drawing at most 3,000 runners to east central Wisconsin. I probably am the only one from HI this year. I would recommend this marathon to anyone chasing the 50 states or just want to run 26.2 or 13.1 miles through Eastern central Wisconsin. The entire race weekend experience could be categorized as fun, adventurous, crazy, and memorable.
It's an urban race that snakes through a lot of residential areas throughout 26.2 miles. It was kind of fun to run through cul de sac's where all of them were either having some sort of Wisconsin or Green Bay Packer memorabilia on themselves or on or around their homes, as we passed on by. The race started at the UW-Fox Valley campus, which coincidentally was the venue for the marathon packet pick up and expo as well. The expo was kind of small, with only a handful of vendors and exhibitors displaying their wares and services. You can get in and out of the expo and packet pick up in about 30 minutes, if you were in a hurry. The highlight of the expo was meeting Olympian and fellow marathoner Jeff Galloway. Been using his run/walk method for over 50 marathons and still do!
We were given the option of parking near the finish line and taking the shuttle to the start, or just parking at the start, but you'd have to figure out how to get back after finishing. I chose the finish line. Easier this way. Easy logistics when you have a small town marathon, versus a large one like Chicago or Boston - which can be a logistical nightmare. With that said, the course was 26.2 miles for me. The first half of the course, the half and full marathoners ran together before splitting off after mile 3. After that, we marathoners had the task of 23.2 miles thereafter. We wandered through basically residential and small town roads. Some roads were busier than others, but all was good. There was a short industrial area at mile 25, but coming into the finish elated at 26.2 was great - as it always is. The announcer ran off my name and city/town I'm from and everyone who was at the finishing chute applauded. I mean, who from HI would come to Wisconsin and run a marathon? Not many, I'd say.
Still, the end of the marathon is always sweet and quite satisfying. Fox Cities marathon in WI is a good race and well managed. The aid stations were marked about 2 miles apart, so that was good. The finisher medal were good too, although in 2015, it was their 25th anniversary, so they had a special design for it. If you want to run WI, check out Fox Cities marathon. It's typically in mid September.
