Serendipity is such a wonderful thing.  And I had a rather serendipitous food experience yesterday. I was looking for a snack and instead discovered a tasty meal in the most unlikely of places: a gas station convenience store. I was in Kernersville on business, and I decided to stop for a snack---maybe a pack of nabs or some corn nuts or something. Of the 3 or 4 convenience stores in the immediate area, I happened to select this one. This was a fortuitous decision.  When I walked in, I headed for the snack section.  But wait. What was this alluring scent tantalizing my olfactory center? Ah! Fried chicken. And it smelled GREAT. But gas station convenience stores are not known for their cuisine. As Chevy "Clark Griswold" Chase said in Vacation: "I'm so hungry I could eat a sandwich from a gas station". But we are a long way from 1983, the spirit of adventure was upon me, and, as I said, it smelled great. So I decided to check it out.  On that side of the store were a small number of tables. They were occupied by a few country gentlemen sitting around telling lies and solving the world's problems as old men such as these are wont to do. There also was a glass display case full of fried chicken and potato wedges. It looked good and smelled even better.  I couldn't resist. I ordered a thigh, a wing, and potato wedges. The friendly, industrious worker cheerfully placed the items in a box and rang me up. The price was very reasonable.  Fried chicken: very good. Not too greasy and with a delightful crunch. The meat was moist and delicious. Potato wedges: I don't generally like potato wedges of this size--they tend to be overdone or too dense. But these were really good. The outside could have used a little more crisp, but the interior was moist and delicious. I'm not the only one who likes the food here. As I sat in my truck eating my meal, person after person went into the store and emerged with a bag of chicken. And keep in mind that this was at 4:15 in the afternoon--hardly the dinner rush! So don't disregard it because it's a convenience store. 1 Stop in Kernersville is a good place to get some tasty fried chicken and potato wedges at a good price. I can't believe I have missed this place for so long! I actually heard about this place from a good friend of mine who eats here 3-4 times a week lol. I decided to try it yesterday after work as I was starving. The place is basically a chicken shack within a gas station, but it's totally legit food! They have all their items displayed as they have see through glass covering them. They are mainly known for their fried chicken and potato wedges as that they refer to as "taters." The chicken is perfectly seasoned and they offer all pieces of the chicken at various prices. He taters are HUGE! You get 6 if then whenever you get a "snack meal" but trust me that's plenty! You also get a roll as well with your snack. They have various "snack" meals and I went with the 2 thighs and a leg snack. The problem was they were out of kegs and breasts, they just had thighs. This told me that their chicken was pretty popular, and if you want a broad selection you better get there early when they start serving lunch! The taters were hot and very filling, I also got some packets of hot sauce to top of my meal to add a little kick! They have a variety of other items from corn dogs to buffalo wings as well. So. Convenience store chicken -- insert eye roll here, right? NO, now get off your high horse because their fried chicken is fantastic! We got the 12 piece box, which included 3 each: wings, breasts, legs and thighs. We also got a small size taters. Normally, I don't care for wedge potatoes because they are too potato-y but I read they are battered in the same stuff as the chicken then fried. They were good but I probably wouldn't order again. I'm saving all my room for the chicken. All of the chicken pieces were well coated in seasoned batter, very crispy but the meat was still juicy - even the breast! They were under heat lamps but it was still very fresh. This tastes like your granny's fried chicken, always fresh and never frozen. They've maintained an A rating since 2008. The girls behind the counter were wearing masks. We could not see the cooks to verify masks or gloves. On the way to a friend's house, Jerry saw a sign for the 1 Stop #6. The extensive chicken options had us in a quandary for a few minutes (The Eagle, Snack 2PC, Dinner 3PC, Just Chicken, Tenders, Livers, Wings, The Wife Saver, The Whole Thing). The friendly person working the counter that Saturday told us not to worry, pick whatever items we wanted, and he could ring it up. We went with an order of Hot Wings and a 3-piece chicken meal. (I confess. The Sides of Corndog and Eggroll intrigued me and are at the top of my list for our next visit.) Usually Jerry and I take notes on each item as we eat while everything is fresh in our minds. We want to capture the details so we can give readers a full accounting. I said I had "chicken fingers" and didn't want to get food on my phone, so I couldn't type in the notes. The truth was, the chicken was so good; I didn't want to stop eating until every bite was gone. All the chicken was pull apart tender and juicy. The crispy skin on the fried chicken was nicely salted. The seasoned large potato wedges in the dinner were fluffy and tender on the inside. Soft rolls and packs of Texas Pete hot sauce completed our combo. The wings were tossed in a Texas Pete Wing Sauce with sliced jalapenos. The food here is very hit or miss. When it's fresh it's good. The service is rarely pleasant. I love their livers but I have learned to call ahead. Called today and Megan answered the phone. I asked if they had livers. You would've thought I was prank calling. I reminded her that they usually had chicken livers in their grill area. She mumbled something asked someone if they had livers. She told me that they did and I asked for an order to be started. She mumbled again and said the fryers were full and it would be 10 minutes. Ok... Can you put an order in for me???? There are many people who would love to have a job... Megan isn't as enthusiastic. I get there and there are 3 people behind the counter carrying on a conversation. One seems to be a cook. He goes back to the kitchen. Megan is checking someone out on the front register. The other lady told me she could get me on the side. I ordered 5 chicken tenders, 1 chicken breast, a large order of potato wedges and told her that I had called in the chicken livers. She rang it up... $19.59. Didn't think much of it. They packed my food up and left, glad to be out of the place where I seemed to be bothering them and they had other things they'd rather be doing. Heading home I stopped for gas and looked at my receipt. It showed 5 items on the receipt. 3 chicken charges, 1 taters charge and 1 deli charge. What????? I guess that's a way to make a little extra money. I ordered 4 things, not 5! There was no way I was calling to get more attitude and even on their Facebook there's no owner information or a way to message anyone. If you go here, make sure the food is fresh, that you check your receipt and you don't mind people waiting on you with major attitude. I came here on a recommendation from a coworker and claimed that I could buy the best fried chicken there, only it was in a gas station. Sure I was skeptical but so glad I went to check it out! It is inside the Marathon gas station right off of exit 10 on 40. They have chicken combos, wings, potato wedges and a variety of sauces. I bought the breast and wing combo that came with 7 wedges and a roll for about 6.59ish? It was no more than $7 with tax. Awowwowwooza! That chicken was soooooo bomb! The skin was crispy and and the seasoning was delicious and kind of unexpected for some reason. It really blew me away. The chicken breast was so juicy and the wing was pretty big as well. It was also really crispy! The potato wedges were huge and were lightly battered. I loveeeeee potato wedges and these were perfect! I will be sure to go back the next time I'm in Kernersville to try the wings! read more

Until August 2019, I worked at the Kernersville Target store. We were lucky enough to have had our Human Resources people bring in the One Stop #6 fried chicken and potato wedges several times while I was still working there. Oh my, those were the best pieces of fried chicken and potato wedges I've ever had. Perfect. Absolutely perfect. Light coating. Not greasy. Chicken juicy inside, thanks to them pressure cooking it in their kitchen, according to a "Journal Now" article I read about One Stop #6. And the potato wedges were great too. Soft potato centers with just the right amount of light breading. This is food well worth going there for. I look forward to eating lots more of it in the future. It's the best! read more

The chicken & potato wedges are out of this world good, but the service is horrible. I just had them be extremely rude to me for placing what they deemed was a "big" order without calling it in first. I ordered enough wings & wedges for 3 people, which didn't strike me as a huge order. Both people working told me I should know better than to come in at dinner time with that size order without calling in, and they didn't want to sell me what they had ready. Here is probably one of the most unlikely places to find good food. The 1 Stop is basically a gas station with a small restaurant inside. They only have a couple of seats for eating in, most people get the food to go after a busy day. They specialize in fried chicken, chicken tenders, chicken livers, and potato wedges. Its hard to find good fried chicken any more. I am happy to report that the 1 Stop is still going strong after many many years. The potato wedges are coated in batter and then deep fried. Very large, each one is about 1/4 of a potato. They are a reason to visit by themselves. The fried chicken is available in various combinations and box specials. Its crispy crunchy without being to dried out or too greasy. The batter is good old southern style. The tenders are white meat and also cooked to perfection. Tender and juicy inside and crunchy outside. If you like chicken livers then be sure to try the ones out here. They are lightly battered and deep fried too. Its hard to get them to turn out right but 1 Stop has chicken down to an art! The service is fast and friendly. Not exactly a place to take a date or to go dine in, but again they do what they do very well, and that is make good fried chicken. Stop and take some home. You will be glad you did! read more
