I left this encounter with this company with a real sour experience in my mind.
To give some context. I had about 500 sqft of broken up tile in demo bags and about 400 sqft of carpet of underlay, some baseboards, and about 5-10 cardboard boxes (Not broken down). All of these items were within 15 feet of the truck for loading. So in terms of difficulty (aside from the tile) was not that bad.
The main reason I called this company, was to get rid of the tile and have someone load it for me, as this would be impossible for me in a minivan and given the weight of the tile. The carpet and whatnot could have been taken to the eco station with not much trouble.
So, I will say they are responsive to appointments bookings and show up on time, because I called the day before and booked the appointment with the impression they were going to do an upfront (turns out not that upfront) quote. Now under normal circumstances, jobs like these are done via weight. However, I do not think this company's business model is based on full junk removal, but more odd pickups from multiple houses. So they charge by how much room in the box truck your stuff takes up, and charge based on that.
So, the guys show up and they are nice off the bat, so good on them to that. The main dude looks at my stuff and quotes me 1/3 to 1/2 the truck for up to $400ish. I was certain I made the point that the tile was my main concern, as I also told them to be careful as it's heavy and some bags might have been overloaded. So given the quote, I accepted the job and said, "I'll leave you to it."
I go inside the house and watch the guys on my driveway security cam to make sure they are not loading items from the garage that I don't want to go. They started by dragging the tile bags from the garage and they load about 5-6 bags of broken tile into the truck. Then they stop loading them in the truck and just start dragging out the bags in front of the truck.
Now, this is where I start having an issue. They stopped working on the tiles and start loading in the cardboard boxes and the carpet. Now, this stuff is not heavy but voluminous (coincidence..... maybe... maybe not, didn't even break down the boxes). So, they load all the light and voluminous stuff into the truck and stop when it gets to that allusive 1/2 of filling the truck.
Note: at this point, only 5 out of the 20-30 bags of the broken tile are actually on the truck.
So, they stop loading and about 15-20 minutes have passed since they started and the main guy comes to the door. He tells me, "We have got to the halfway point on the truck and we will need to charge you more to put more on, can you come to look."
Well, I've watched them the whole time and I've already known what is going on. Needless to say, I was NOT HAPPY with the fact they loaded up all the light and big things and left all the heavy tile bags on the ground with more carpet in the garage. I make my displeasure known that I feel slighted with what is on the truck and what is not.
I asked them why they didn't load all the tile first and just put in all the light big stuff. His response was, to get defensive and say that they are not trying to "fluff the load" and they are doing it for their safety (this part is important for later).
So, I'm left with the choice of paying these guys almost $400 for them to take away light stuff I could have dealt with for $40-$100 on my own, or pay another $180-$200 (to $586) for them to load up the rest. Which is the stuff (tiles) that I wanted to go to in the first place. I was pissed. Eventually, I relented (gave in).
So, here's the important part about safety. The second guy then climbs in the box of the truck and on top of the carpet and other refuse as they start loading all the broken tile bags at the very BACK (tailgate) of the truck and on top of all the other stuff. Also, the driver was working with a broken foot.....? So, they are guilt-tripping me into this being a safety issue.....?
So, in the end, most (not all) of the stuff I wanted is gone, and it cost me north of $600 to get it all done. I could have just ordered a bin to be dumped on my drive and dragged those tile bags through the front gate for $350.
So now I feel swindled and wonder what the heck happened. I look on google, and the company has many 5 star reviews but this experience in Edmonton, AB, did not reflect that.
It felt like a total con job. read more
