Getting beer in Copenhagen can be a tricky business lately. It's not just about buying a six pack of Tuborg from nearby Netto to drink over on the street of Nyhavn while feeling smug toward the tourists who "have" to pay overpriced beers from those nearly picturesque cafe traps along the canal. Nope, we need a place too that isn't as snotty as cocktail bars around the posh Holmens Kanal or the lively Gammel Strand that can be a little bit too daunting to navigate on Friday or Saturday night but it shouldn't be those dodgy bodegas where the elderly generations of this country spend their time chugging their favourite Tuborg while shouting "det' hyggeligt, ikk os?" to each other either Ølbaren is just perfect place in between. A simple place where you can get a decent beer (if you can't stand the usual horsepiss pilsner that are widely available here) and can still hold proper conversation with your friend without the dunk-dunk-dunk techno music whatever that they play these days. As a matter of fact, they played classic jazz which I liked, with a volume just right to be enjoyed in the background. The bartender is friendly and could recommend you the beer that you will enjoy based on your preference. They have quite a selection so you could try to find your favourite for your next visit. I just get really good vibes from this place. The decor is nothing special, there's no music at all, the beer list is pretty big but slightly confusing and displayed haphazardly on their chalkboards. However, there's just a good feeling about this bar. Loved that we could sit and talk for hours here. The crowd here seemed friendly. We got friendly advice from the folks already at the bar about the different beers. This was actually very useful because the chalkboard does not list the beer's percent alcohol or beer style! It was full but not packed on a Thursday night. By the time our rather large crowd of 7 picked up the drinks at the bar, a corner table had opened up so we got to sit. I had a beer with the fantastic name of "Flying Couch" which was very dark, sweet, and malty (good in a 25 cl size, probably undrinkable if any larger). I'm not sure how large their beer selection is, but certainly large enough so that I got to try a few new beers. I wouldn't call this a very hip or exciting place, but it is a great place to hangout and chat with friends. read more

Very nice beer bar with 12 taps and a big variety of bottled beers. The taps were full of diverse beers from stout, rauchbier, kriek to pilsner, IPA (India Pale Ale), DIPA (Double IPA), Hefeweizen. They offer to help you choose a beer to your liking and give sample as well. Went there as a group of friends and we really enjoyed our time spent in this bar. All in all a great bar for fans of craft beer. read more

I've got to start by saying that a few friends know this place as the 'Bowie Bar' as it's always playing David Bowie, which frankly knocks it up to 5 stars. I should also mention that I have to stay away from beer due to some issues with yeast, so I can't review the beers. It can be tough to be friends with so many beer nerds. However, I can review the atmosphere, service and other drinks on offer. I generally order a whiskey (usually Laphroaig) or rum with a sparkling water on the side, and it's always at a reasonable price delivered with excellent service. I also love that it's always a slightly older more subdued crowd without a whiff of the pretentious. The place is quite small so does get very crowded and getting a table is hard, you will often have to wait until others leave to get a seat anywhere. All in all very highly recommended by this non-beer drinker. read more

Like a little beery den hidden below street level. Reminded me of some beer bars back home in Portland OR. Awesome friendly staff, great beer selection. A very "guys" kind of place...I was the only woman in there, aside from the female bartender. They have soccer & rugby on all the TV's, yet it didn't have the typical loud sports bar feel to it. It was very close to where I was staying, and I wish I'd gone there sooner, because it was a far more pleasant experience than Mikkeller Bar, where I went my first night in CPH. Ended up chatting at length with the female bartender Julia, who works at another beer bar not far away, (Fermentoren) and she encouraged me to check out that place as well. read more

Old school with a modern twist. This would be the best way of describing this little pearl in its sea of hipness. The bartender thought my friend and I were the slowest people in the world, but hell, we chose, didn't we? The beers were fresh and good except for this one beer that tasted crazy sour. I think it was the point though. Argh, who cares, I wasn't the one who had it. There are chairs outside where you can see the sometime funny-looking locals and get yourself a nice afternoon buzz. Another of the better casual beer bars I visited in Denmark in December. Surprisingly young and mixed clientele for a beer bar, there were a lot of students here. The bartender was friendly, prices comparable with everywhere else in town. Easy to find as well. read more

Lovely place for beer lovers and conoisseurs. The menu changes daily so you have always some new variety on tap to try. Get one of the latest craft beers or a traditional German Rauchbier... The guy at the bar knows exactly what to recommend. Music is quite old style like Dire Straits or Springsteen but that somehow fits the atmosphere. read more

These guys have really got something going here. If it wasn't for the massive neon sign saying "Øl" (beer) outside, you might miss Ølbaren, and that would be a shame. The menu of both bottled and draught beer is extensive, and curiously enough sourced almost entirely from Danish and US breweries. They do also have a few German brews, and some from those crazy Scots at brewdog. Happy hour is before 2000 everyday, and with big beers for the price of small ones, that's when you'll want to come. read more

A nice little beer bar in the nørrebro area. The place itself is small, so you might come here early on the weekend or just wait until a customer leave. Very nice people behind the bar. They know which beer to recommend to suit your taste. If you are up for a nice coffee smell, then go for one of their porter choices; the Gamma La Cabra Coffee Porter (5%). If you want a bitter one, look no further than their Ghost Brewing / Brewfist Red Haze (IPA 9%). I am not sure if they do this all the time, but they do play some piano tracks in the background, the kind that they play in the central station to get rid of people. read more

this is a great place if you want to drink a good beer and get cozy with some friends, but think mikkeller is too pretentious. the bartenders are up for a chat and are pretty good at recommending beers, in my opinion. you can get something refreshing that you can slam down or a complex beer that takes an hour to drink. and the fact that it's in nørrebro gives it one extra star.
