Great spot for local specialities. We stayed in Furnas for 3 nights and we visited this restaurant…read more3 times! We tried some other local restaurants, but we couldn't get enough of this place. Cozido das caldeiras: Furnas stew cooked for many hours using the volcanic geothermal soil. The stew contains pork, beef, chicken, sausage, blood sausage, greens, potatos, and carrots. Really good hearty and homey feels. The meat and vegetables are super tender and flavorful. Grilled octopus: a whole octopus cooked perfectly with garlic and oil. Grilled limpets: Local mollusk that reminded me of mussel/clams cooked with garlic and butter. They were a little bit chewier than I would prefer but cool to try. Old fashioned codfish: fried fish with a tangy sauce. Super delicious! Beef steak: this one was okay if you want meat, but I think the seafood is much better here! Save room for dessert!! The pineapple flan and mango sorbet ice cream were so yummy!

With its live piano music and soft European decor, it's on the more romantic side. If you're here with friends, you may have to try to keep your voice lower, so conversations wouldn't be the most comfortable. But we made it work! If you want a more open and less hush-hush atmosphere, inside is an option, where it's more social and artsy. The food is outstanding. My friend got the octopus and she said it was the best she's ever had. I wish I got what she got! Another friend got the risotto (vegetarian option) and she loved that. I got the ceviche because I wasn't that hungry, but I thought it was delicious and better than any ceviche I had in Peru. It's a small portion, but it's just an appetizer. We finished with chocolate ice cream covered with peanuts, always a winner! The service was good. The manager checked on us and made sure everything was fine. Our dishes took an extra long time to arrive, but we dealt with it, and it seems like that's the norm in Azores. So don't come here expecting a rushed meal. Take your time at Singular and enjoy!

The Sao Jorge cheese may be the best I have had. By the time it gets to the United States it's certainly a HARD cheese, but this was soft and almost spreadable on the bread. Delicious. The menu here is massive. They had about 6 different Portuguese steak options, but I went for the classic with egg and peppers. I do with there were more red peppers on my steak, but I appreciate the hefty amounts of garlic and sauce. The steak itself was cooked perfectly to medium rare and tender. I'm not a big steak girlie but I ate the whole thing in no time. The bottle of wine certainly helped it go down easily. Finished the meal with a chocolate crepe, which I can still taste as I type this. Loved this place and will come back every time I am in Ponta Delgada.

last night out in Ponta Delgada! it was another chilly night. and rainy. boo…read more.. we had walked by this place a few times. it's set among a row of other eateries by the waterfront, and is part of a shopping plaza. the previous few nights, the patio was full of people so we figured it must be pretty good. the meal started with the requisite bread basket. like most of the waterfront eateries, there are numerous fish options. but also plenty of meat and even some pasta dishes. our fish dishes were expertly cooked, and the portions are huge. if we weren't leaving the next day, we would have gotten a doggy bag it was so good. a big plus were the vegetables. i think this might have been the only place during our week long stay where we were served steamed vegetables...a little broccoli, a few carrots....service was very friendly and the language barrier was minimal. and to top it off, also one of the few places we ate during our week long stay that did NOT allow smoking inside! double the stars! but there is a street side patio, very lovely i'm sure on a warmer, less rainy day.

We ordered the "lulas grelhadas" (grilled squid) which was a generous serving of this local seafood, and perfectly cooked with a delicious sauce. Many Azorean places overcook these but Solar do Rei do Frango did a great job. The side salad served with the dish was fresh and while we thought it would make a good appetizer for two, it was in fact a large enough portion for a meal. We didn't mind, however;-) We also ordered the "Frango da Casa" (house chicken) which seemed fitting given we were eating in a restaurant named "House of the Chicken King". The roasted chicken comes with choice of sauce (mild, medium or spicy) and is served with fries. Everything was delicious and finger-licking good. Solar do Rei do Frango had a nice choice of other typical dishes but clearly the roast chicken is their specialty. They also had a nice selection of wines and half bottles. The entire meal with a half bottle of wine was less than 20 euros for the two of us. And the decor, service and overall ambience was that of a more upscale restaurant so I felt like the prices were of great value for the overall experience. We will definitely be back and recommend our guests try Solar do Rei do Frango when in the Sao Vicente area!
