Worst. Japanese. Experience. Ever.
First of all, I want to say the Sushi Mori in Caroline Hill Road location was absolutely fantastic. Thinking I would like to go there again, I made a booking on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014. Got the confirmation and was looking forward to another great omakase meal.
Upon arriving at the Caroline Hill location, I was informed that there was no reservation under my name despite the fact that when I made the booking, I spoke to someone at the restaurant that confirmed my booking. Already slightly annoyed, the hostess offered to send us to the older location on Tang Lung Street. Ok...fine...
Thinking that since it's the same group and restaurant, how bad can it be? Well...let me count the ways -
1. The service was practically non-existent despite there only being 2 other seatings at the sushi counter/bar.
2. We decided to go with the chef's pairing/omakase and see what kind of food we would get...wrong! Not only was the craft of the chef completely lacking, the quality of fish and choice of sashimi and sushi was just horrendous. I could have gotten a better meal had I went to CitySuper and bought pre-made sashimi and sushi! WTF...
3. We were so put-off by the poor quality, even more horrendous skills of the chef, and the piss-poor selection we decided to end our meal.
4. Here's the best part - 4 selections of sashimi, 3 selections of sushi, 1 bowl of fish soup, and 1 bottle of sake - total price for 2 persons...HKD 3,560!!! And we're not talking about high-end toro, geoduck, uni, or exotic fish...this was some scallop, hamachi, poorly prepared and cut-up mackerel, and botan shrimp. W. T. F.
5. After complaining to the chef himself, whereby he actually STARTED TO ADMIT maybe the prices were a little too high, the waitress (she said her name was Noven) shoved the bill in my face and asked for my credit card. We asked for the manager and was told the manager rarely comes in and is not around...awesome, by the way, great way to run a restaurant.
Needless to say, I would never set foot inside this location again. Ever. I hate that after this experience, it would make me think twice before revisiting the Caroline Hill location as the service, quality, and craftsmanship was literally 180 degrees. I sincerely hope the management of the Tang Lung Street location do something about their staff's attitude and training. I would never recommend Sushi Mori Tang Lung Street to anyone I know unless I want them to experience the worst Japanese food in all of Hong Kong. read more
