Located just in front of the university library, this is more than mere a sculpture. Rumors have it that whoever dares to pass thru the arch of the sculpture, he or she shall never graduate from the university unless he or she rolls down the steep flight of stairs next to chinese culture research center. I am not sure how true the rumor is, but i rarely see people date to pass through the arch. It is also a place for big events to take place. In the university dance community, during the first semester there will be joint-U mass dance; dance teams of different universities will flock to this part of CU for a show. The statue serves as a backdrop to witness the show. While in the past it was actually the place for student to hold forums to discuss political issues, a place for different opinions to voice out. It is also a place to gather and to unite the students as an entity to represent themselves in critical times. As an alumni, this is a place where I feel proud of; for it is a symbol of the students in CU has a deep tradition in playing an active role and standing firm on their own grounds. CU is a place not only to gain knowledge, it is also a nurture ground for social responsibilities.

It's a place where I both love and hate…read more I love the environment, I love the campus; yet i hate hate HATE the inconvenience of the traffic. With the four years I spent exploring this campus, CUHK is definitely a university unlike all the others in Hong Kong. The first impression of CUHK would very likely be the vastness of the campus; with buildings scattered all over this hills, it takes more than a year for freshers to get familiar with the campus. More commonly heard is that some students in their 2nd or 3rd year still have yet to completely explore the campus. The scenery of CU is also beyond compare especially when you go all the way up to the peak of the hill (i.e. NA and UC college); rumor has it that the famous Sir Run Run Shaw has his villa looking over to the same scenery as that you see from CU, believe it or not but it sure is breath taking. I would very much like the campus remain as is, but development is inevitable due to the recent change in education system. The once spacious hillside is now dotted with buildings; I miss seeing the large pieces of greens afar, miss the spaciousness of the campus. Nonetheless, the recently developments do make lives for new students a lot more convenient. There are always two sides in a token whether you like it or not; for us "old ghosts", it really takes time for us to get use to the changes. We aren't being called old for nothing~

Learning French seems to be a very romantic thing to many people- maybe its the films, the culture…read moreand the general impression of the French being very passionate lovers. I'm not too sure what it is that attracts people to AF but for me, it was purely an academic pursuit. As the language is spoken by so few in Hong Kong, I found myself at a loss as to how I could continue learning the language because it had always been part of my syllabus at school. After so many years of perfecting my broken French, I thought it would be a waste to just throw it away and forget everything that I had learnt. that's why I signed myself up for a course at the AF. Back then it was still in Jordan (which I think a school is still there) and the conditions were exactly great. I hear that they have managed to get the place done up which I think will be a great thing for students to come. They make such an effort to make learning fun and credit goes to the teachers for being so patient. Courses are split into beginner, intermediate and advanced levels- if you are unsure they will test your abilities and I think that's a good measure for where you are at. The fees back then were quite reasonable and I think they still are, such fees include books and tapes which you will need for lessons. In all, I think learning languages should be encouraged at all times, it brings people together and will open your eyes to other cultures. If the French May is your thing but you don't speak a word of it- I would definitely point you in AF's direction.

There I had my happy childhood. I got up early for mass in the small chapel. I remember how much I concentrated in bible lessons. I always listened to bible stories with my mouth opened. I enjoyed fathers ( father Lu & father Yam) came to visit us because we knew we would have ice cream or some goodies. My mother was admired by neighbors because we, her five children got accepted to study in this nice elementary school. Mom is 88 years old now. When she talked about this, she is proud of us. Every year I visited Hong Kong, I had an urge to see Saint Mary statute in the playground with flowers around her. I remember how we prayed to her in May. I wish....
