I've worked both in emergency ambulance services, as well as the hospital side of things. I'm giving this a 3-star review for lack of a better opinion. I come to HK multiple times a year for business and this time I happened to get sick with a lung infection, and suddenly in the middle of the night I lost my ability to speak and started coughing vehemently. Looked up emergency services and this was one of the closest. It's a huge hospital and the facilities are pretty clean. But the emergency department nurse told me there's a wait time of AT LEAST 8 hours. That's really the longest I've seen someone have to wait. I understand an emergency department needs to triage, and yes, of course there were cases that were more critical than me. But I also expect a public hospital to be staffed well enough to not have patients waiting for over an hour or two. The nurse suggested that I try a private hospital, which I did, not wanting to wait (at least) 8 hours and miss my next day's business meetings. So I took her advise, and waited about 10 minutes at a private hospital close by, got examined for less than 5 minutes from the on-duty physician, and was on my way out of there with medicine in hand (antibiotics, cough medicine, and masks to avoid getting others sick) in under 1hr. I'm sure having a couple additional on-duty physicians to take care of cases that are quick and simple will go a long way to quickly solve this issue.

A personal experience recently has further confirmed this. Delivering a baby is stressful business, being a first time parent further adds to the anxiety with so many questions clouding your mind as to what you are doing right (usually none) and what you are doing wrong (everything). Booking your wife into the hospital is more akin to booking yourself in for an unknown experience; what will happen, when will it happen and how much will it cost- these are all the things that you really don't know. St Teresa's really took concerns off my mind in a couple of ways- staff members were friendly and they were always supportive right from the word go to when I left. At no point in time did I feel that I was left to fend for myself and nurses were always on hand if we needed anything (with the exception on one nurse in the new born viewing room who felt the need to tell everyone off for calling their new born child too often). Doctors (not necessarily associated with the hospital but nonetheless) were also friendly with us and they, having done thousands of deliveries, knew what we were concerned about. The wards were clean and airy and the preparation courses for new parents were all very helpful and informative. This was all further enhanced when the bill came and it was pretty clear how everything came to the amount and all was as expected. I don't know how other hospitals fare but given my only experience so far I would say this is pretty good by my standards. Two things though: Don't park for too long at the hospital- it will cost ya. And don't buy anything from the shop downstairs unless you have to because its a rip-off.

I should fair in saying this but I have never really had faith in chain medical service providers…read more They give me the feeling that they don't really care about their patients and they are just trying to bolster their coffers in asking you to go through absolutely unnecessary tests and so on. The fact that you seem to find them everywhere also gives me a sense that its medicine on the cheap. So you might be wondering why I actually bothered to go in the first place. That's because for one of my jobs I actually had to go to their centres for a pre-joining medical check. Needless to say their centre was big and clean, felt more like a showroom rather than a medical centre if I'm honest. I was led in to conduct the tests and they were extremely careful about what they did the whole way, despite the fact that they must all have to go through plenty of these humdrum tests all day long. The tests were completed very quickly and I noted that they had a dental practice at the same location. I thought to myself that since I'm here I might as well get that done as well; they actually had a place for me immediately and by the next hour I had it cleansed and looked at. All this brought to me the reality of the situation: we may all want a family GP who talks to us for half an hour and attends family weddings. The thing is though, nowadays we want good, cheap and quick medical service and UMP is right up there.

He was in our hotel room in 1.5 hours and saw my husband there, without us having to get in a taxi, travel to the medical center, register, and wait to see a dr there. This was SO much better for my husband, who had a fever and did not want to get out of bed. Dr. Kung was efficient yet thorough, and gave my husband some antibiotics as well as fever-reducing and anti-nausea medication. He also left his card for us to call him directly if my husband got worse. It wasn't cheap but it was so worth it to have a house call in our hotel room. We were very pleased with Dr. Kung and the house-call service offered.

As a result I've come across quite a few places and have always found their business structure to be quite interesting. This place is a non-profit clinic and run just like a hospital outpatient. You would make an appointment, arrive and sit in the public wait area to watch some TV. The tv screens also have your booking number that would direct you to a doctor's office. Once in the doctor's office he would examine you, and enter the diagnosis and prescription in a computer which gets sent directly to the pharmacy. The doctor would also ask if you prefer boiled medicine or powder which you can mix with hot water at home. You would then return to the wait area to wait for the medicine and the typed out prescription so you can replicate it at your preferred pharmacist. This is definitely a more efficient method than many of the Chinese doctors I used to go. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to try Chinese meds for the first time. This concept of this clinic is actually very interesting, and the fees are not prohibitively expensive, however, the location is just way too far for me.

They don't look fancy at all but, they are sanitary inside the wards and keep it very clean and safe. For skills- since this is a teaching hospital, they are 2nd or 3rd best in all the world. ( I got this info by word of mouth - check into it yourself ) If you decided to give birth at Matilda, but something goes wrong, you send up at Queen Mary Anyway. This is because the private hospitals don't have the materials to deal with such situations. Now, in my opinion, the bedside manner is just awful. Every exam is so "routine" for them that you are just a number. So when you go to appointments, have your list of questions, and be ready to take quick mental notes or make chicken scratch on paper. But if you go in there knowing this, and politely but firmly tell them your way, they will be fine - usually. Most doctors and nurses speak great English. Some, not so much. So find someone to communicate with well. Some doctors are nicer than others. Getting them on the phone is horrible. Just visit. You will NOT have the same doctor each time so get yourself a private doctor or midwife for piece of mind. The labour ward is horrible. Women moaning due to contractions - 8 beds per space separated by curtains. It's not horrible in terms of care. To me, it's horrible because you're there alone without your friends or company to help you cope. You can't move to the delivery ward until 3cm dilation. The delivery ward is efficient. You finish your dialation and you have a baby. My delivery doctor was like "Don't touch my towels" LOL Post maternity ward is what I like best. You may have too many people in the room but the food is better, and you feel much better after labour and delivery. It's like the labour ward in terms of set up. You are expected to take care of your own child so you are "bedded -in" with your baby unless there's a medical reason that he should be in the nursery. So in this ward, there is almost always a baby crying somewhere. You stay here for 3 days after. Anyway, that's generally how the maternity ward works at QMH. Lastly, if you have no complications, you pay 300HKD to deliver here. That's. It.
