Grace Choi, founder and designer of Yi Ming Design, creates ready-to-wear cheongsams that remind us of the close-fitting contours of the Chinese dress of decades ago but updated with modern prints and finishes.
Upon arriving in Hong Kong I targeted several places: Linva Tailors, Blanc de Chine, Shanghai Tang and Yi Ming.
Why the hunt is worth the time +'s:
+ Latest 2016 collection focused on large garden prints of tropical flowers, white lobularia and other garden varieties that explode on the silk fabrics in bold colors and strategic placement. Fabrics are of good quality.
+ Fits are hit or miss. As a standard US Size 4 or 6, the equivalent is not a vanity size small. I'm a Yi Ming Size Medium or Large. Nevertheless the fit is pretty good for something off the rack.
+ Great service from the woman at the showroom. I didn't realize I was at the showroom instead of one of Yi Ming's stockists. She let me browse without pressure.
+ There is room for bargaining especially if the season is near its end.
+ Try the online site for updated selections.
+ Children's sizes in a regular Western dress styles are available in matching prints.
Why the hunt should be skipped -'s:
- It shouldn't be skipped. After looking at several places, I found Yi Ming to have the best modern take on the cheongsam. I bought not only a cheongsam but also a cheongsam vase that mirrored the fabric design. Matching purses are also available. read more
