In a world where I have no kitchen and there is a barrage of cheap food at every corner, eating…read morehealthy has become my number one mission. I promised my fiancé I wouldn't get fat, but every day it's getting tougher and I'm getting bigger. How can you throw money down on a HKD $90 (CAD $15) salad when next door, you can get a HKD $30 (CAD $5) bowl of noodles?? I've always found it ridiculous that uncooked vegetables cost so much more than everything else. Minimal effort, maximum price. So I had to start thinking outside of the salad box. I was aimlessly wandering around my hood in search of cheap food, and lo and behold, I found this place. Dumplings are healthy, right? I choose to believe they are. Especially when boiled and made with veggies. 8 Ways isn't just for dumplings, although that's what they headline with. They've got a bunch of traditional Taiwanese fare like noodles and soup as well. With Western healthy options, they tend to take a bite out of your wallet. Asian food in Asia is much more forgiving. 10 dumplings, one or two flavors, and a drink for HKD $38 (CAD $7). They've got your standard pork dumplings but also things like curry and kimchi. You probably don't see chives often unless they're on top of a baked potato, but they make a good dumpling filler! For that extra boost of green, add a plate of leafy veg for HKD $10 (less than CAD $2). Drinks are also a bit more creative than your standard coke or sprite. Soy milk, plum juice, or bubble tea for a little extra. The space is small (as usual) and the tables are sticky, so if you want to eat in, it's far from a luxurious experience. But it's cheap, it's fast, and it's good. Or just do as the salaryman does, and get take out. Hong Kong is a beautiful food scene with every type of cuisine other the sun. So it was only reasonable they'd have SOMETHING that overlaps healthy and cheap. Good news is that 8 Way Dumplings is a franchise so you're never far from one! Hopefully by the time I'm back in Toronto, I could say I "8 my Way" to a healthy victory. (25/100) - 2017

Predominantly vegan, the place can be described as ovo lacto vegetarian. Jasmine tea, preserved vegetable dumplings with broth, fried noodles with vegetables, fried rice with chinese mahogany and an eggplant claypot was on the table. With a side of pickled cucumbers and mushrooms. The claypot eggplant was the star, flavorful and very tender. Spicier would've made the dish star-rier. It didn't occur to me that the fried noodles would be actually fried and not stir fried. Abundant mushrooms in that one. The fried rice was nicely done, crisp vegetables and all. The white pepper brings out the flavors. The dumplings were good, thin wrappers and mostly mushrooms in there. The broth was simple but tasted good, and I think it was the white pepper that did it again. They have non-Taiwanese / international dishes on the menu as well, so that maybe for another time.

They're similar in the aspect that you get to choose 3 veggie dishes / sides out of 6 listed options. If you work in Wan Chai (or even just in the area) and want to grab a quick vegetarian meal, this is the place to go! I love eating here compared to the other two similar concept restaurants because the food is simply the tastiest of the three. Everything is just super flavorful and tasty. Also, unless Happy Veggies and Art Veggies, they give you a small bowl of rice in case you're the type of person that doesn't eat much rice, but then they give you the option to scoop more rice and soup. Unlimited rice and soup, at your service! The other locations only give you one bowl or rice and one bowl of soup. THUS, if you're the type to eat a lot, you will certainly get the bang for your buck here. I always leave this place pretty full and satisfied. Aside from the veggie sides being yummier than the other places, the portions are larger too for the same price. So... even though Happy Veggies is closer to my office, I still rather take a bit longer time to walk here and eat Liza Veggies' food. :) *FYI - they display their daily veggie options in Chinese... Thus if you can't read Chinese, I recommend coming here with a friend that can read Chinese OR just look around tables to see what others are eating to get a sense of what you would like to get. It is certainly not ideal for non-Chinese readers, but promise it is worth it! My Chinese reading skills aren't all that great too, but I still come back time after time. It's a testament to their food la. ;)

It speaks of our idea of a farm: wholesome, natural, nostalgic, healthful, minus the dirt under your fingernails and the manure on your boots. It makes you think that you are eating healthy and natural, even if you are eating fried chicken or an 8" tall honey toast loaded with ice cream and cream. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate this place. Successful marketing, that's all. It's nice to feel a bit closer to nature and a bit more tranquil just sitting inside the restaurant. And their food is pretty good. We ordered a set lunch, which for $72 includes a drink, an appetizer, an entree (your choice of protein includes beef, pork, chicken, duck and fish! No veg option though) and a small noodle/rice. They hand made their noodles, and the beef is tender, so I really enjoy their beef noodle soup. We couldn't resist ordering the honey toast. It is a stack of 3 thick slices topped with mango, mango ice cream, whipped cream, sauces, marshmallow and more. Quite a feast for the eyes. They bring along knife and tongs to make it easier to make headway into this gigantic tower. I really enjoy the dessert. The toast is crunchy on the outside but still soft inside, so it doesn't hurt my tongue like sandpaper, and has a hint of sweetness. Personally, I think this is a dessert best shared among 3 or 4 people. The two of us got really stuffed putting this away. A significant portion of the menu is dedicated to drinks (tea and coffee) and desserts, making this a great spot for afternoon tea.

My mother and I have been here a few times and we find that the quality of food here is very inconsistent. Sometimes, it's pretty good. But other times, it makes us regret making the choice to come here when there are so many other restaurants in the mall... And unfortunately, today was one of those times. My mother and I came at a little before 2:30pm and since it was late, we managed to get a table right away. There've been times that we're here at around 1pm and have to wait at least fifteen minutes. My mother ordered the roast suckling pig with wonton noodles, and I got the barbecued pork rice. The food took quite a long time to arrive - 15 minutes - and when we asked, the waiter said it was because there was only one chef left at the moment. My mother's roast suckling pig had more fat than meat to it, and was extremely salty. No joke - I chugged two cup of tea after I had a piece. My barbecued pork was not bad, but there were only 5 measly pieces. The rice was also so soft that it was on the verge of being soggy. There was also way too much rice for the fact that there was so little pork too. On the bright side, all the food came out hot. Maybe it was because we came at a time that the chefs are all ending their shifts, causing the quality of food to drastically drop? I don't think my mother and I will be back in a while - the last time we were here, the food was disappointing too.
