The boat ride is short and sweet but unique. I think most shopping mall play areas do not have a boat ride. For each child to ride the boat, parent supervision is required. There was a line during our visit and our wait was approximately 20 minutes. The ride itself is probably two minutes long but the kids enjoyed it and saw different characters along the way. The whole play area seems a bit dated and could use a refresh.

I've always been to Southorn Playground at night, and most times to meet up with friends or to eat…read moremy take away dinner or snack over there. I've gone up the stands and chilled out. It's great to have an opened space like this in the middle of congested Wan Chai. The stands overlook the facilities (one football and four basketball courts plus a children playground) and this is its main use nowadays. However it's served as various uses throughout its history: a naval base, a night market...until the 80s when the Government decided to turn it into the sports facilities it is today. Fairs and sports competitions are held here and it has even been the venue for Adidas Streetball Challenge, a 6 days length basketball tournament. The crowd here is a mix of...all types: children and young guys playing sports, mums waiting for them, elderly playing games or doing some stretching, office workers having their lunch, loners observing the grounds from the stands. So you can actually say it's more than a sports center, it's a social space in the heart of Wan Chai that makes the district even more lively. It's opened daily from 6am to 11.30pm. And finally a little bit of general knowledge, so that you know what Southorn means and don't think it's misspelled: Southorn was a British officer serving as Colonial Secretary from 1925 to 1936 and the Playground was named after him in 1934. Though sports facilities are good, for me it serves as an alternative place to hang out with friends while staying away from the bustle around.

Tin Shui Wai Park may be far, but with close to 15 hectares of green space, it is worth the travel…read moretime and effort. Surrounded by residential areas, Tin Shui Wai Park feels very serene. There are a few people, or maybe because I decided to visit on a weekday. Being far from the city center and where the ratio of children to elderly is 1:10, the park is definitely for those who prefer a slower pace of life. The facilities are also highly maintained, the bathrooms clean unlike the ones in densely-urban areas such as Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po. Because the park caters highly to the elderly, they have a special area called the "Elderly Fitness Corner" where there are a lot of old people stretching to improve or rather maintain their flexibility. The fitness stations scattered across the park are a great place to do some yoga or plyometrics. There aren't a lot of people using it so you can have it all to yourself for as long as you like. Another thing I like about this park are the hard-surface tennis courts and soccer pitches. Again, since it's so far from the city, not a lot of people use these facilities except for the nearby residents (which are mostly elderly). There is also a model boat lake where one can bring their radio-controlled boats to play along with. For those who have model cars, the park has got you covered as there's also an area for radio-controlled cars. Play gateball? There's an all-access practice and match court for the taking. Finally, for skateboarders, there is a simple concrete area with rails and a street plaza, perfect for trying out aerial tricks. If you do get tired of being in the park and prefer the comfort of air-conditioning, Kingswood Ginza is nearby.

The park is clean and mostly frequented by the elderly. I saw very few younger people. It would have been nice if they allowed unique snack vendors. There is a fast food concession but options are limited. All in all definitely worth checking out if you are in the area.

This was my favourite childhood hideout place. I remember all those times my primary schoolmates…read moreand I acted like superheroes running around playing hide and seek; paddling swan boats. Since my primary school is right next to it, we would spend hours after school just to have a bit of fun at the park before heading home. Last week I went back there again and I was flabbergasted how it has changed. The lake we used to row boats on are completely drained out and the two of the entrances of badminton court have been blocked by potted plants (there goes my short-cut), luckily one thing that did not change is the mass of greenery. Another thing that surprised me was the crowd here, back then there were only some elderly chilling and doing Tai chi in the morning, now there are more street performers singing classical Chinese songs. This place has become more lively and vivid. (Yet I did read that there have been some kinds of prostitution targeting the elderly there going on lately) With the completion of the West rail and also the newly established V-City and the new residential area, I would not be shocked to see the growing number of people here. Sadly, the crowds also come with more rubbish and I was really disappointed to see the litters on the floor unfortunately. Regardless of the fact that most of the stuff I was familiar with about this place is gone, whenever I pass it by I can vividly recall where my hiding spot was during hide-and-seek; and I am glad that spot still exists, (which is a secret spot of course!)
