The pretense is non-existent and locals (including myself!) seem to love it here. So like many noodle spots in HK, this place is fairly small. No big tables for 5+ but quite a few small'ish round tables that are good for solo eats or the invaluable food companion. The aroma coming from the semi-open kitchen should be enough inspiration for folks to know what they want upon arrival, but just in case they have the menus outlined along the wall. An easy way to start? Try a wonton and beef brisket with your choice of noodles. The wontons are somewhat pillowy in texture and full of flavor while the beef brisket is braised well while maintaining a perfectly chewy bite. The noodle variety is good, with egg / rice noodles winning over the crowd though I feel the e-fu noodles take the cake. Lastly, do not sleep on the beef tendon. It's practically butter when done right. Chui Hing does fancy itself as a HK style cafe, so other dishes like congee, fried fish skin, fried rice, may appear on the menu, focus on what to stack in your bowl instead. It wasn't exactly Japanese curry or Indian or Thai curry; kind of its own thing but it had a nice hint of spice that worked really well. Because the portions were so huge, we actually packed a big takeaway box before we even started chowing down. We each got a cream soda too, which honestly feels mandatory when you're in Hong Kong. Overall, it was a good experience. Just note: they only take cash, and they also charge for takeaway containers. Bring an umbrella too as there is no cover while waiting outside. Fries and other items fit the bill for a beachside joint. They have a quality beer selection for a small bar, from the standard Tsing Tao and San Miguels to Sapporo on draft, while other more interesting beers are also available in the beer coolers. A full bar is also available, though I haven't tried their drinks. Perhaps most importantly (for me, anyway), it is extremely dog-friendly and is a frequent endpoint for us on walks or hikes with our dogs. The staff is really kind to the dogs and is always right there with a bowl of water for them (hey, they just finished a hike and deserve a cold one, too!). This is really appreciated, as not everywhere in HK is so accommodating to dogs, especially near the beaches. The only downside is that the prices for beer have shot up recently -- from about $25 to $50 in the span of a year. I'm not sure if it's a seasonal spike for the summer or if their rent went up, but it's a noticeable difference. However, the extra money is a small price to pay for such a laid-back spot, and we will no doubt continue to visit regularly.

Our bill for four courses came to about 1000 Hong Kong dollars for two persons. Everything about The Ocean was tres magnifique. Go now, before it becomes too popular and passé.
