The treatments were very helpful in stabilizing my mom's symptoms. On top of that, the environment of Chain's is extremely warm, inviting, and calming. I love this place! Chain's has been in existence for literally hundreds of years - since the Qing Dynasty. It doesn't get much more legit than that, right? Dr. Kelly Chain and her husband head up the clinic, and they do a bang-up job. They not only offer the usual acupuncture/cupping/Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatments, but they also have branched out into beauty treatments, such as natural anti-aging (i.e., no botox, fillers, and all that other nasty shit that you see SO MUCH OF in Hong Kong . . . ugh) and spa-type treatments. They even offer a yoga class, which takes place in their "stone chamber," a room made of maifan stone with special energetic healing properties. If you're feeling really shitty and come in for a cupping and/or acupuncture treatment, they'll set you up in the stone chamber to give you a little bit of a boost from your treatment (and not upcharge you for it). I started coming to Chain's for cupping/acupuncture/TCM on a weekly basis, after I saw the results on my mom. The results were incredible. Without delving into too much detail, Dr. Kelly and her colleague Dr. Kay Tam (she is phenomenal!!!) were able to rebalance my chi using needles and TCM, and they corrected a hormone imbalance that I had been struggling with for YEARS due to my refusal to "correct" it with western medicine (sorry western doc, but you ain't gonna just put me on The Pill and think that's gonna solve all my problems). I also came down with probably the worst flu of my life while I was living in Hong Kong, and Dr. Kay Tam fixed me up good as new with 2 cupping treatments, a bunch of acu-needles, and TCM. During the massage, we had a great conversation and I learned that she had received training on giving massages, etc., and it certainly shows. I am planning to come back later and bring my boyfriend. If you are happy with her service, I recommend leaving a nice tip for her and her small business. She speaks fluent Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese. The staff mixed some Chinese medicinal herbs into the water, and soon steam came out from the bottom of the bucket up my feet and legs. I was offered tea, and given a remote control to adjust the temperature. I guess I was over ambitious, and had to turn the dial a few times to avoid cooking my feet. There is free wifi, and an outlet next to my chair, so I can charge my phone and go online (a blessing when travelling!) Honestly I didn't expect my whole body to be sweating, but gosh I couldn't sweat more if I were in a full sauna! My legs felt amazing afterwards!! Like walking on clouds! A day's tiredness evaporated and I felt all fresh and ready to do more walking and shopping! It felt even better than an average foot massage. The very friendly lady told me that steaming is better than a foot bath as the temperature is kept higher. So, after a couple of days, I went back, taking a curious hubby along. He totally enjoyed every minute of his leg steaming. He set the heat low so he was comfortable the whole time. For me, I got even more adventurous and tried the whole body steaming, where I laid on a bed with a human-shape cut out. The bed was rather small. I am petite and fit in fine but a big guy may find his legs dangling outside the bed. After the steaming, I had red patches on my body. They were not burns, as they weren't painful and disappeared after a few hours, though meanwhile I looked like an abuse victim. Those patches indicated areas where my chi was not flowing smoothly, and did correspond to where I usually have pains and aches (left shoulder, right elbow, etc.) (Similarly, in cupping and gua-sha, supposedly you get bruises only where there are chi blockages.) Again, a very rejuvenating treatment. I just wish my stay in Hong Kong were longer so I can go back a few more times. They also offer facial steams which I'm curious to try too. The fact that you seem to find them everywhere also gives me a sense that its medicine on the cheap. So you might be wondering why I actually bothered to go in the first place. That's because for one of my jobs I actually had to go to their centres for a pre-joining medical check. Needless to say their centre was big and clean, felt more like a showroom rather than a medical centre if I'm honest. I was led in to conduct the tests and they were extremely careful about what they did the whole way, despite the fact that they must all have to go through plenty of these humdrum tests all day long. The tests were completed very quickly and I noted that they had a dental practice at the same location. I thought to myself that since I'm here I might as well get that done as well; they actually had a place for me immediately and by the next hour I had it cleansed and looked at. All this brought to me the reality of the situation: we may all want a family GP who talks to us for half an hour and attends family weddings. The thing is though, nowadays we want good, cheap and quick medical service and UMP is right up there.

This was SO much better for my husband, who had a fever and did not want to get out of bed. Dr. Kung was efficient yet thorough, and gave my husband some antibiotics as well as fever-reducing and anti-nausea medication. He also left his card for us to call him directly if my husband got worse. It wasn't cheap but it was so worth it to have a house call in our hotel room. We were very pleased with Dr. Kung and the house-call service offered.

I did it just for grins and the "higher end" experience and besides, massages are known to be a lot cheaper in Asia than back in the US. I have gotten body massages in the past in Cambodia and in Jakarta, Indonesia but this visit was to be quite different. I opted for whatever the brother-in-law wanted and so we both did their 90 minute massage advertised for 788 HKD or $102 USD. Apparently, you only pay for the massage time, but you can loiter all day here if you want, eating and relaxing, with no additional charge. That's what's different with this spa's offering. So, after a first shower, I enjoyed their jacuzzi, then sauna, and then a steam bath (my first time ever for that and it was quite different and shocking to the senses but all good). Then I had a coconut drink and I could have had some munchies but opted not to as some dinner choices were a'coming as part of the massage fee. I then had a second shower, and ordered dinner as we sat on a lazy boy recliner and you can use your smart phone or watch TV, etc. I had a sausage clay pot rice, some Chinese broccoli and a bowl of soup, and another coconut drink and it was all quite good. Next, it was on to the 90 minute full body Chinese massage. I had it done medium strength and with oil (you have choices here). I got a pretty young lady, so that was fun haha, but I couldn't communicate verbally with her due to language. Anyway, she went the full 90 minutes uninterrupted, and it was relaxing and refreshing, and wow that takes stamina too in my mind. No complaints there, but after a third shower, it was checkout and pay-up time. Upon checking out we were hit with a suggested tip of a surprisingly high 400 -1000 HKD or $52 - $129 USD which is a tip of 51% - 126% which was quite exorbitant. We ended up going with the minimum suggested tip, and not making a scene, to end up with the outing coming out to $168 USD apiece. The brother-in-law was surprised also and had not been to a Hong Kong spa in 5 years. He speculated that we were just hit up as out-of-tourists. Anyway, the overall experience was good and interesting, but the unexpected high pricing left a sour note with us.

Another thing I noticed...everyone is in the company uniform, so you notice the corporate culture touch through the uniformity of look. You feel so good upon leaving, the question on tipping becomes a question in my American head (we tip the US...we just do...it is a custom...)...it was such a good experience, I just want to give them a tip.
