#ThrowbackThursday - Remembering Hong Kong…read more.. Conveniently located at Nathan Road near the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, we decided to have our final meal in Hong Kong at Daikiya Japanese Restaurant. It's a very solid all-you-can-eat option with two thick notebooks of pictured items to choose from. The raw and the cooked, the fish and the meat, the meal and the dessert... Sashimi - The usual suspects abound (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, etc.), but they also have hokkigai (surf clam), amaebi (sweet shrimp), Hokkaido hotate (scallop), and nishin (Japanese herring with roe). Served on a bed of ice and decorated with artificial flowers, each platter was well-plated... and delicious! Nigiri - There are plenty of winners here, but let's focus on the one that topped the list - Grilled Scallop with Crab Oil and Garlic. Seared enough to give that burnt flavor, dabbed with crab oil, then topped with roasted garlic... Need I say more? This was the highlight of our meal and, yes, my younger daughter and I had this over and over and over! Worthy runners-up - Grilled Flatfish and Prawn with Black Fish Roe. Rolls - An assortment of maki (sushi roll), temaki (hand roll), gunkan-maki (ship roll), and sashimi rolls was on the menu as well, but we were able to try only a few. The Mango and Soft-Shell Crab Roll was too small and had more cucumber than anything else. There simply were better options to be had. Grilled - Surf and Turf! Shrimp, scallop, oyster, lamb chop, beef, chicken, pork, and even pineapple. The best dish was the Sautéed Diced Beef with Garlic. Perfectly seasoned and cooked medium, these beef chunks were so tender and tasty! Dessert - Gotta save room for some (or all) of these - mochi, macaron, ice cream, tiramisù, brownie, crème brûlée, fruit, nut, and so on. We indulged in their special Milk Top, which had a limit of one flavor per person. We tried the Romantic Moment and Green Tea Harmony, which had soft-serve ice cream, red bean/paste, mochi balls, jellies, and rice crispies. The only way to cap off an AYCE! After restocking on calories, we were ready to head back to the hotel and then to HKIA. Daikiya was just what the doctor ordered to fill up our bellies before leaving. We totally enjoyed our stay in Hong Kong, but we had to wrap up our adventure. It was time to say goodbye... for now...

No wonder HK is the paradise for foodies! 1) The menu was extensive, almost overwhelming (there are 2 books), including sashimi boat, nigiri, tempura, seared fish, hand rolls, California rolls, desserts, anything you can think of! My eyes lit up when I opened the menu like I saw gold. 2) The food quality was very good for the price we paid. Everything raw was fresh and chilled and the rest were all served hot and steamy. 3) Service was super efficient and courteous too. They tried to fulfill all your requests. 4) It can be packed so book an early table. 5) You won't break your bank here to be able to enjoy a quality AYCE. We were all so full at the end. I can't wait to go back next time I'm in HK! I hope they stay in business for a while and keep the quality up! **** I heard the other locations don't taste as good so not every Daikiya is the same.

What really sets this place apart from other omakase restaurants is their service. When you walk in, you really feel like you are back at home. They even helped me charge my phone! Atmosphere: cozy, 14 person joint. There are 6 seats at the chef's bar, and another few tables. Casual, relaxed, and very intimate. Food: WOW. So special. Let me start with the first course, which was a seaweed with sashimi dish in a delightfully sweet soy based sauce. Next came the sashimi course, full of fish I never even heard of, but was pleasantly surprised at the fresh, and delightful texture. Third course was an amazing mackerel dish in a sesame sauce, straight from the chef's home town. Let me say, this was the highlight of the evening. Our next courses of sushi were on point, with tuna, toro, Uni, kampachi, etc. just amazing! I would definitely come back, especially for this fantastic food at a reasonable price for this experience. The couple make this experience even better, they're so welcoming you could come by yourself and be happy! In fact, a Japanese man came by at around 9:30 to start his dinner and they seemed like the oldest of friends!

The Ikkei is a small restaurant with a few tables and a few seats at the sushi bar. Go for the sushi bar when you make the reservation, to enjoy an incredible Omakase. The front of house is very knowledgeable, friendly and makes every effort to make you feel comfortable. There is no wine list, they stock up different sakes almost every week. They will show you different bottles, tell you about the different tastes and of course the price. I like this concept. Food here is excellent, very fresh and innovative, watching the Chef at his work is always a treat. You can always order a la Carte but I prefer the Omakase. Having the Omakase will set you back HK$ 1000 which is really good value for money, taking into account the high quality!

Last call is 2:30 and we got there around 2pm on a Sunday. We had wait a little for the bar to clear up. It's a very small restaurant with only maybe capacity for 20 people or so. We ordered a sashimi lunch set and a tempura set and man it was such a great deal! My sashimi set includes almost 10 pieces of assorted fish like yellowtail, maguro, salmon, imitation crab (don't care), but hey they put amaebi and toro on my plate too and that was quite a nice surprise! Not only the sashimi was plentiful and amazing, my set also came with the steamed egg, miso soup and some pickled vegetables! The tempura was pretty good too and I liked the fried fish, very flavorful and tender! The sashimi set cost around $220 and the tempura a little less than $200. The prices are reasonable for the portions and the quality! Very great deal! Just come here earlier and be prepared to wait.

Boyfriend and I wanted to have a more pricey dinner so we are on vacation…read more This is a really cute, small restaurant. They closed at 10:30pm and we showed up at about 8:30pm. One of the waitress approached us and apologized that they were busy and no seats available. She walked around and came back to tell us that there should be seating at 9pm, and so we told her, "no problem, we will be back then." We walked around the block and went to the mall to kill time. When we got back about 8:50pm, we waited another 15 minutes, which was fine. We could tell it was busy and every seat in the place was taken (they had group celebrating a birthday-- they offer birthday cake!) By the time we were seated, half the place was getting up to leave. Every staff member starts their sentence with "I am sorry.." which they have nothing to be sorry for!-- but just could be their way of being polite. The waitress who took our order was an older lady. She's the one who approached us when we first arrived, who seated us, and took our order. Her English was pretty good, with a very thick accent (of course) but you can understand her. If you couldn't she will repeat herself or try to say it in a different way. She offered many great selections!-- including which needs to be dipped into their special soy sauce and regular soy sauce. We had sashimi of: baby tuna, tuna, salmon, sea urchin, yellowtail.. and a few others I can't remember. And one tuna roll. Their wasabi is delicious! Everything is fantastic! They offer coke, sprite, and orange juice, along with different types of alcohol. The staff is always busy, literally hurrying along. They come over and wipe down the soy sauce drops that are on the table. They switch out your plates once they start to look a little too used, and always makes sure your drinking glass is full. One of the best services I've ever had! I did have to ask for the check, but maybe they do that so you can enjoy your stay and not feel like you need to leave. Our bill was just a little under $250 USD, but that was expected with all the sushi we had, and just what we were looking for. We highly recommend this place!

I had bookmarked this place to go to if we ever were in the area as a noteable place to eat some…read moresushi. We showed up at 6:30PM on a Saturday and despite not having a wait for the two of us, this place was packed. Full, to the brim, a butt for every chair, jammed....let me not diminish the understanding of how busy this place was. We were a touch confused at first, but note that this is an ALL YOU CAN EAT sushi establisment. Different than we are use to in the US, you do not go up to get food, you fill out the forms and the all you can eat sushi comes to you. It is also ALL YOU CAN DRINK on soft drinks and such, which you physically get up to go get at the communal fridge area. So once you get seated, you flip through the tear out pages of their big book. Pages are clumped together, so you kind of have to flip through and find the different clumps of pages, with different clumps of pages having different stuff (fried, seafood, appetizers, sushi, sashimi, noodles, etc). The book seems disorganized a bit, but you will figure it out when you start looking at the book. There is alot of variety on the menu and there is also desert. So when you find something you want, mark it on the page and how many orders of it, mark your table number as well on each page and leave on your table or hand to one of the many servers running about. They will wisk off your orders and POOF...your food will magically arrive! Fill out additional forms when you want to order more. The restuarant is very busy and despite the chaos of lots of people, you can tell the staff and its operation run like clockwork and are very very organized. There is a two hour time limit on seating and like clockwork, there was a lead guy who comes around and lets you know about the time and wants to make sure you got everything you ordered and hands you a bill to be paid. The cost for dinner was in the ballpark of $250HKD per person. It is certainly a good value if AYCE is your thing. We thought the sushi was good. Sashmi pieces of salmon, tuna and toro were good. Small portions, but good quality for what we would expect from an all you can eat joint. The fried oysters were my personal favorite. Clearly there was a local crowd at this restaurant and you can tell it is a neighborhood gem.

We were ready to explode by the time we were done. Grand total (with 10% service charge.. $1280 HKD). Next time, I'm bringing the village.

What can you get for HKD $350 in Hong Kong for lunch? Tons of stuff. But can you get an Omakase 12…read morepiece sushi lunch with appetizers and dessert for that price? Along with impeccable service and an intimate atmosphere where the chef makes you feel like a friend? I'm gonna say no (but I welcome anyone that disagrees). Sushitsuru is a hidden little shop on the second floor of an old building in crowded Wan Chai. You walk up the muggy stairs and turn to one side to see a dirty hallway, then you turn to the other side and are greeted with a Japanese-themed, wood-decorated oasis. It's a complete escape from the hustle and bustle downstairs. HKD $350 (after service charge) will get you the 12 piece sushi set, at the chef's discretion. It also comes with a salad, a hand roll, udon, miso soup, and homemade ice cream/coffee, just in case you were worried you won't be full. Now, I can't tell you exactly what I ate because I was too intoxicated by the deliciousness to translate the chef's Chinese descriptions into English (plus, fish names are just confusing). However, there were some that really stuck out to me: Bonito(?) With Uni - I think the Chef said this was bonito, but I don't really remember. The texture was pleasingly squishy and the flavour with the uni on top was nice and strong. Sweet Shrimp with Crab Roe - The shrimp was so incredibly sweet and the crab roe had a perfect hint of that sea creature savouriness. It's like an oceanic flavour explosion. O-Toro - Can't deny a slab of good old tuna belly. The natural fattiness found its ideal place towards the end of the sushi set. Uni - They are not stingy with their sea urchin! You get a good 4-5 pieces piled up on a carefully rounded mound of rice. Pretty much when the Uni starts falling, he stops putting it on. The sea urchin was sweet and fresh, yellow creamy perfection. Flounder - Pieces of flounder were soaked in a soy sauce mixture, torched and then set on a piece of rice. I've never had fish like this before. It literally disintegrated in my mouth, making me panic because I thought I swallowed too quickly. As with all Omakase, it is best experienced at the bar, where you can watch the Chef craft his masterpieces, place the sushi gently in front of you, and quietly interact on a more personal level. The Chef in question, Mr. Ken Fung, is an undeniably great sushi chef and a wonderful person overall. He clearly has many regulars and they are all clearly fond of him as a person. I can see why! After hearing that I've never seen flounder sushi before and was leaving the country, he gifted me with a piece on the house, and asked that I hopefully return next time I'm in HK. Now that is how you get a repeat customer! As with most gems in HK, Sushitsuru is quietly hidden but a complete surprise when discovered. It's one of those places where you can celebrate an intimate special occasion, but as seen with the many regulars that visited, it makes for a very viable lunch option (they have cheaper but quality lunchboxes). Make a reservation, set aside 2 hours, and be prepared to experience some amazing food at a reasonable price, with staff that are very good at convincing you to come back again. (71/100) - 2017
