Since I live on the island side, i have to wait here overnight until the box office is open. Aside of that, the rehearsal room on the 10th floor is also a place i visit often. With the mirror and barre installed, it is quite perfect for dance rehearsals to take place. However, since the location is rather convenient and the price is insanely low when compared to studios of similar sort, you have to book in advance and compete against other applicants in speed in order to place your booking. Lots of rubbish, but that's reality, and as someone who makes sculpture from rubbish I was in heaven. Wander to Shelley's lane off Wing On street and see how some locals are also turning the rubbish into art. If Shelly is there you can have a chat, kind of, my Cantonese is zero and her English is a little rough, but we got by. There's loads of dogs and cats wandering about which the locals feed, cos like I said, they are nice. Come on people, let's save Peng Chau! Get that ferry and get wandering.

Instead, we have kids staying indoor learning piano, violin, etc as young as 5 years old. So I always appreciate outdoor activities for kids and this is one of them - Noah's Ark. Opened in 2009, Noah's Ark is a rather new tourist attraction and it mainly caters for family and kids. How can you call itself Noah's Ark without the actual full-size simulation of Noah's Ark? I was pretty surprised when I first saw it as I thought it would be a much smaller scale but as the park's centerpiece, it does not disappoint. As an informative and religious place, this place allows visitors to learn about nature, family value and also the harmony. The highlight of this place to me is the "Ark Expo" where you can enjoy multimedia entertainment, for example, you may have a look at the short movie in the "180 degree Theatre" and see how Noah's ark came to its being. And I really do love the Ark Garden where you can have pictures with the replicas of the animals. Nevertheless, there are a few things which sort of put me off a bit. First is the religious theme is everywhere. I should not be surprised being coming here but as an atheist, I really do believe they have over-done it a little bit and you can almost feel that they are shoving those beliefs down your throat; second it the location, it seems like this place is too secluded, being located in Ma Wan, Noah's Ark is the only thing you can be here and the trip to here takes up most of your day already... regardless, I still love this place for kids to run around.

And I am glad to have come here because one of my private tutee lives here. Basically I come here at least once a week and I would say that it is a rather nice and comfy neighborhood. Taking the Light Rail, I would say for first timer, the direction to Lam Tei Village is very difficult to navigate. You can either go over the foot bridge or cross the main road. Anyhow, once you see the narrow road that leads straight to Lam Tei, you just enter this village. And get ready to be wow by this place. At first it looks like one of those countryside streets where people on both sides are selling different products, you may find barber shop, bakery, grocery shops, wine shop for rich guys who live here as well. But then you will soon realize lots of tourists coming here for the restaurants here like the Steak House that denies your access if you do not make reservation before - kind of pricey - around HKD300 to HKD400 for a plate; or the Chinese restaurant, etc. Walk further in and you are surrounded with village houses, three storey or so. You can also see a Lam Tei temple. I guess the traditional side of this place is still well preserved. For outsiders, please be warned about stray dogs. I am so scared of dogs so whenever I finish my class at night, I have to take out my flashlight to make sure I am safe...

I am a museum rat, so I seek stuff like this out on purpose, not by chance…read more I was not expecting much during my visit to the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre (HKHDC), but man was I blown away with the place. Not only located inside the beautiful Kowloon Park, this place is another free museum in a sea of inexpensive museum options around Hong Kong. So the first half of this exhibition is indeed a lot of things that are historically relevant to Hong Kong and Kowloon from over a span of 6,000 years, but just not interesting to me (pieces of broken plates, shattered cups, shards of utensils...all hundreds, if not thousands of years old). But in addition to the featured exhibition of Heritage Fiesta 2015 highlighting declared monuments and grades 1-3 historic buildings, there is a great permanent exhibition about the chinese, western and modern architecture and buildings of the area. Through old videos, oral interviews, research, photographs, you get a complete feel of the rich character and historical value of the buildings all around us. Not only does it showcase these buildings, it emphasizes excavation, conservation and knowledge throughout the HKHDC. Reuse and repurpose. I enjoyed hearing about the extensive conservation efforts to preserve the history of Hong Kong through its architecture and buildings where it can. The HKHDC is well done, current, up to date and seems fresh (versus some museums that can feel very dated). It is not so large that you could not buzz through in less than an hour, but there is extensive information and you could take it all in and visit much longer. There is a little vending machine spot, but no cafe on sight. The courtyard is lovely late in the day and worthy of a sit to take a breather and relax if you have the time.

One exhibit had just closed but the rest of the centre was open. It is amazing how much history Hong Kong has preserved. Looking at artifacts from thousands of years ago really shows how innovative humans were even then. One section showed how much the skyline of Kowloon and Hong Kong had changed over the past 60 or so years; it was drastic and fascinating. But my favorite part was the room with the glass floor feature thousands of piece of broken pottery. It is a must see! Overall, the centre is a nice (cheap) place to browse around and learn a bit about Hong Kong's history if you have an extra hour in your day.

Tai O is a rare place in Hong Kong that is still much involved in the fishing tradition and village…read moresettlement culture, although it is also witnessing much change over the years, such as the stopping of hand-operated ferry, building of bridges subsequently, and the big fire that burnt much of the stilt houses in 2000. In view of the disappearing culture of the ancestors, the village committees of Tai O created this little non-government owned private museum, in order to showcase the history of Tai O, before everything is gone under the tides of development. In this tiny 'museum' - essentially occupying only 1 shop area at a locate shop house, you can see many fishing nets, fish hooks, repairing and making tools for them used by the local fishermen. There is also a nice collection of household utensils, and other goods of the boat villagers, to allow you a glimpse of the lives on a boat, which is not commonly imagined by us living on land. There are also quite a few old photos, maps documenting changes regarding the coastal area, as well as the livelihood of people living here. These objects are all donated by the local villagers, in hopes of consolidating the collective memory of this fishing neighbourhood, and tell the story to the younger generations and visitors. I think this communal effort in retaining the cultural identity is very nice, and worth learning from, for citizens living in other old districts of Hong Kong, which are facing the inevitable flux of quick change to their neighbourhood.

But with that being said, if you are in the area, this tiny museum space seems renovated with fresh paint, slick with interesting reading installations and is clean and pretty interesting. So if you do find yourself in the area, take a few minutes to pop in to this free museum. In short, during the expansive growth of Hong Kong to the north many moons ago, during construction, a tomb was unearthed and discovered. The tomb did not contain human remains, but it contains all sorts of interesting things dating back a few thousand years. Artifacts, pottery and the tomb itself was preserved in a mound that is sheltered right there among the public park and the urban growth. It is not a big tomb, but kind of cool that Hong Kong kept it preserved for future generations. There is a nice public park attached directly behind the tomb itself.
