What you get with Wing Shing, is a very well stocked shop, staff that are more knowledgeable than in the Fortress or Broadway, but all of it with a slightly better safety-net then the local mom and pop stores in Sham Shui Po. Don't get me wrong, shopping here is still quite difficult, especially if you're not a Chinese speaker. The staff, whilst knowledgeable, can be pretty grotty and aggressive, but just let this pass over you, do your browsing, and buy if you want or need to. The shop stocks brand new camera ranges; Canon, Nikon, Go Pro, etc., lenses, bags, tripod, filters, as well as some of the more obscure photography accessories; dollies, pro-sumer DV cameras, microphones, waterproof cases. There is also an excellent lens departments, with both new and used lenses. The staff here are particularly knowledgeable and geeky, and will be up to run you through the difference in products whether they be the known brands or Chinese copies. If you know exactly what you want to buy, and perhaps are after some of the less quality critical products, like bags or clear glass filters, you may be better off going to the mom and pop stores in Sham Shui Po, which will be significantly cheaper. However, if you want to have a browse and play with all the camera kits, and get a bit of decent advice, then Wing Shing would be a good first port of call.

Salesman had no comment. Guess they have to charge a significant markup to help with the rent. I won't deal with them again.

In fact, if stock can't be found in Wing Shing (which rarely happens unless it is a hot and new item), staff will run up to Man Shing to get it for you. The Fa Yuen Street branch is their flagship store and the other branches are located in the "vegetable" streets, Choi and Sai Yeung Choi Street. What I like about Wing Shing are their honest prices and decent stock of less-than-mainstream photographic equipment such as Rolleiflex, Gitzo and Phottix. The prices here are competitively better than the shops in Hong Kong Island. Often what you find here you will not find in mainstream electronic shops such as Fortress and Broadway. A big plus is you don't have to squeeze in with those who want to buy cell phones (a la Fortress/Broadway) - although there is a mobile phone section - and just focus on getting your photography game on. The staff aren't pushy but are sometimes rude - it pays to research ahead and know what you want so you can inspect and buy the item in 10 minutes flat. Always, always discuss the warranty before purchasing. Normally what I do is check the average price of the item on the Internet by looking at the official press release then comparing it with the New York giant photographic store B&H. Once I know the official price(s), I convert it to HKD to see if the pricing is fair and if I should move forward with my purchase in Wing Shing. Credit cards are charged with interest so make sure you pay in cash (and also ask for a discount if possible).

I imagine Sunrise as the neighborhood photo shop of Sham Shui Po gone by. They've got film SLRs, TLRs, rangefinders, and a number of compact cameras. It's very easy to get to from Exit C2 of Sham Shui Po station. Just keep going straight for five blocks until you reach a pedestrian crossing. From there, cross the pedestrian crossing and spot a small shop that has cameras upon cameras by the window. The interior is small and cramped, I think it can fit at most five people inside the shop. If you just want to get your film prints on a CD or in print, go straight to the right side (where the computer is). For prints, ask for optical finishing and say what size you want your prints to be. I convert a large number of my slides and negatives here, they come out at 18 megabytes per frame for only 60 dollars! When I purchase a medium format camera (hopefully this year), I'll still get my 120mm film finished at Sunrise. Their service is fast and affordable, plus the staff are very friendly. I also purchased a Russian lens from them once, near to closing time. Imagine that, the shop was fifteen minutes to closing and there were still three people inside the shop. I thought I would get some alone time with the staff to talk about the different models of the lens that I would be buying. Nevertheless, I already knew what I wanted to buy beforehand. I inspected the lens for any dents or major scratches to the front and rear element. It was cosmetically sound so I mounted it on my camera. All apertures work and the lens is 99.9 percent clean, aside from a minor scratch at the barrel. A word of caution: Sunrise works on consignment so it is very important to inspect the item carefully (or get a friend who knows their photography equipment). Everything is transacted in cash and there is no receipt. As such, there is no refund or exchange policy.

Prices are reasonable, but not cheap by any means. The staff are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. They showed me all the workings of the camera and how to use it. I was encouraged to try the camera and and shoot a roll of film, which they developed in less than half an hour, and told me if the camera did not work properly they would fix and or replace it. Overall, my experience was brilliant and I'll definitely go back for any film camera needs next time I'm in Hong Kong.

She very quickly scoops my film in a bag, and says ok come back in a few hours. Great! or so I thought... I go back a few minutes later because I realized she didn't ask me for any specificity on my order. I ask her a few questions and she immediately scolds me for not telling her what I wanted. She makes me pay for my order which is fine but she also patronizes me and yells at me in the process. I decide to come back the next morning at 11:30AM which is what their facebook page, this yelp page and other places say they open. I waited outside their door for 45 minutes and no one came. How do you operate a business like this? There is no sense of professionalism or respect for their customers. I go back and get my film, she rushes me out the door. I drop off another roll this time and ask for the same specifications. When I went to pick up my film I left my receipt at home. She promptly says "There's a $8 HKD processing fee if you don't bring your receipt". I did not want to go back again so I just paid for 8 dollars. Normally if something like that happens you'll expect them to ask you a few questions or search for your order. NOPE. She doesn't even put down my 8 dollars yet and she hands me my film and rushes me out the door. I mean, seriously - how disrespectful is this place??? Not only did I feel like she ripped me off, everything on my order was wrong. DO NOT COME HERE WHATSOEVER.

I didn't think much of it but now I always come back here to regularly buy film because they sell a varied (and some discontinued) stock and are, in most cases aside from specialty film, affordable. For those just starting in film photography, I recommend skipping slide (color reversal) film and buy negative film to start with. A good emulsion is ISO 400, Kodak and Fuji films work very well. There are a lot of film cameras all around the store ranging from simple point-and-shoots shoots to medium format cameras. Back when I was interested in buying a 35mm camera, I would've bought it here but got swayed by the cheaper prices in Sham Shui Po. About 90 percent of people who enter the shop are regulars, and 9 out of 10 of that crowd come for the film processing. They use fantastic Kodak photographic paper and can process 35mm and 120mm film rolls (C41 process) for just 20 a piece. Truly affordable. Black and white films ironically costs 15 dollars more, even though it's much easier to develop. If you'd rather develop your own B/W film, they sell Adox and Kodak developers for a much cheaper price than elsewhere. Negatives/slides to CD are also a popular service, with the most expensive service (120mm slide to CD) coming at 60 dollars. Everything else is cheaper than that. Regular 35mm negatives to CD costs 30 dollars and is what most enthusiasts go for. Tip: Get your film processed before 7pm as it can get really busy (lines extend outside the shop). Be prepared to wait and chat up a fellow photographer.

Much cheaper prices than Sim City or Champagne Court and an incredibly helpful and friendly staff. They have film, developing and a amazing assortment of film cameras both 35mm and MF. Products from brands such as Phottix, Eureka, Benro, and Sirui can be had at affordable prices, rendering online ordering null and void. Drop off at Sham Shui Po Station, take Exit A2 and once outside, take a left. It's super easy to spot this shop, light stands adorn the entrance and there are always (ALWAYS) a lot of people inside. Some come just to inquire prices, others to check out the products in person, and my personal favorite, those who know what they want, purchase it and get out within 10 minutes tops. It's much more affordable to shop here for lights and tripods, which is what the majority seem to buy when I visited. For those looking to buy cheap flashes and sample flash photography for the first time, the Yongnuo brand of flashes can be had for under 500 dollars. The last time I bought something here was two years ago, a small LED light that I needed for a videography project. The service was pleasant and the staff amiable. However, do forgive them if they're a bit grumpy at times because of the horde of customers. They have a fantastic website (which isn't their complete catalog, by the way) that you can peruse before visiting the shop. Additionally, it's nice to give them a ring just to ask the price for clarification. Another option is to WhatsApp or email the shop manager if you have any further queries.
