There were deficiencies in the food that were starkly apparent to me: the noodles were oily, lacking in flavour and variety of colour and lacking in ingredients; the fried fish and other dishes such as cheung fun that consisted of pieces of dim sum were placed hitherto on their plates with disregard to presentation; what was supposed to be a milky custard bun turned out to be bitty, dry and overcooked inside; the vegetarian cheung fun was very plain indeed, looking like a novice had prepared it and smothered it in soy sauce; the pig's foot, ginger and egg stew only contained one egg and very little ginger, the prawn wrapped in fried beancurd had minimal amounts of prawn and the mixed dumpling selection was possibly the most unattractive that I've ever seen as the Siew Long dumpling was more wrinkly skinned than I could ever have imagined, the Siu Mai dumpling was lopsided and demented, the Chiuchow dumpling had burst at the rim thereby spilling contents upon being picked up and the Taro bun had clearly been peeled away from another bun as a bit on the side was missing. During my first visit my table actually waited up to 30 minutes for a second order of dim sum that included 3 portions of buns, this demonstrated poor organisation as it strongly suggests that the order was not placed until chased up and of course no apology was offered. Then in my second visit the room in which my family were placed was chillingly cold as it was already a cold day and the restaurant had switched an air conditioning system on. When we asked to switch the air conditioning off we were told that it was already at its lowest level and had to be kept on or the place gets stuffy but the roomful of people were clearly dining in coats and hats and still cold; it took over 3 attempts and a lot of grovelling for the restaurant to finally switch the cold air off but only to turn it on again just about an hour later. Hence overall the service left much to be desired, even by typical haphazard Chinese standards, and although edible there was a distinct lack of care in the preparation and presentation of the food.

They set up an extra large table for us upstairs. Let's talk food first. Crispy pork - Amazing! The skin was super crispy, and the meat and fat layering was perfect. Not too fatty, meat was tender. Fried fish - The right amount of spicy kick. It was so perfectly deep fried, you can even eat the bones within. My uncle said it takes great skill to deep fry this fish perfectly. Tofu Casserole - I think this was standard, as expected from this dish. Pig Big Intestine - Personally, I am not into the texture and taste of pig intestine. But my relatives devoured this dish. Oyster pancake - Fried perfectly golden. Slightly crispy. Choy - I actually really liked this choy. The texture was different from what I've had before. And it tasted fresh. Eggplant Casserole - You can certainly taste the salted fish. We liked that the eggplant was NOT deep fried like the way some other places do it. Stuffed Deep Fish (filled with fish dace) - My mom and I think this is ok la, average. The fish meat wasn't the best. Fried Clams - I liked it, but my mom thought it was average, a bit spicy for her taste. Fish Head Casserole - It came with crispy pork chunks, which wasn't really crispy anymore because it was cooked in the casserole. My uncle finished the whole thing. Fried morning glory - delish, great dish to get your greens. All of the food + 2 beers + about 10 cans of pop + 4 rice + 6 congee = $1075 HKD for 14 people. Service was good on the Thursday night. Let's talk washroom. Not acceptable. I held it. You have to go in the alley way, into the back, and the toilets are the floor toilets style. Be aware.

In case you are an early morning person like my traditional Chinese grandpa: here's a tip: this…read morerestaurant allows you to enter and make yourself at home from 6am but doesn't start serving until 7am. There are a very many number of round tables on which you can sit but you may be expected to share with other people if you and your company cannot fill the table yourself.  On the whole, the appearance of the food here is better than the taste but it is nice to see attention to presentation. Woth regards to dim sum: The portions of roast pork buns and vegetable and meat buns are small with 2 buns per serving rather than three. There is no glaze on the roast pork buns and whilst the bun is impressively soft, there is not enough bun or filling; the vegetable and pork buns were not uniform and they were too salty. The small pineapple bun on the other hand was suitably soft with the desired freshly-baked crusty layer on top. The pig foot, egg and ginger stew was pleasing but perhaps this was heightened by the fact that this option is not available in other parts of the world (so it was sorely missed on my part).  The dumplings were noticeably the best quality offering on their dim sum menu - the Shui Mai dumplings had a genuine whole prawn forming the top of the dumpling.  With regards to the set dinner menu provided for large group celebrations: there is a creative variety of recipes including skinned crispy pork (which was cut with varying thickness and the meat comes at an extra charge); cheesy pasta noodles with prawns, onion and red pepper (whereby the noodles were soft and the prawns cut down the middle were convenient to eat and nice enough); beans with squid, sausage funghi and peppers (which created a colourful dish but it was a little too spicy than necessary); battered eggs rolls with rice paper wrapping and pork (which were intriguing to look at but were otherwise unevenly battered and a little tasteless without the mayonnaise dip), chicken soup (which was full of flavour and a variety of unique ingredients), abalone on turnip with broccoli (which was presented very well but actually quite bland in taste), steamed fish coated in spring onion and immersed in soy sauce (which was succulent and probably the best dish on their dinner set); roast chicken (that was undercooked with red raw blood spewing out of the bones and some streaks on the meat); and lotus buns (which looked great but had a slightly odd, almost sharp aftertaste and did not contain preserved egg unlike other lotus buns). Finally, my table ordered almond liquid dessert, red bean liquid dessert and black sesame liquid dessert, none of which impressed me much as I found the almond dessert to be too fragrant and the other two conversely lacking in flavour. On the whole there seems to be insufficient distribution of staff as in the morning one dish took so long to arrive that we had to cancel it altogether and when I went for dinner there was only one waitress assigned to two full tables who was expected to serve all the courses, replace used dishes, pour drinks and pack up uneaten food all by herself which appeared to be quite an impossible task to do well for one person. Hence, taking all into consideration Tao Heung can offer some delightful and often well presented food but ultimately the outcomes from all three experiences have collectively been acceptable yet not quite exceptional.
