There are cheaper clinics, near clinics (I actually drive half way across town to see him) and I'm sure there are better appointed clinics around than this place. The reason why I keep coming back is that Dr. Chan works- he works in the sense that he cures you of your ailment and the fact that he actually cares about whats happening to you. Although a pediatrician by specialist, patients of all ages visit Dr. Chan and you can see that from the queues forming outside his clinic. Most people actually register and then leave for a bit before they come back because the waiting list is so long. The clinic itself is small and if anything a bit dowdy looking but I trust when you are looking for a doctor the waiting room is the last thing you would care about. The nurses could be described as being quite authoritarian in their demeanor as well, no they are not the nicest people on earth but then again when you are having a 104f temperature you tend to ignore that sort of thing. Dr. Chan does take the time to go over everything that's wrong with you and he will be nice enough to take any questions unlike some chain medical clinics where they are trying to kick you out of the room as soon as they can. One other thing to show that he's not your mainstream type of GP is that he doesn't take any medical cards- cash or EPS only please. If you are looking to receive any vaccination then do phone up before hand because they might not have the jabs in stock. Consultations cost around 320 HKD- its not cheap but I think its worth it as they never skimp on the meds either.

After a short overseas trip, I was feeling very unwell so I visited this walk-in clinic to see what was up. I'm happy with the quick and efficient service that I got here, and wouldn't hesitate to come back again.

This is made worse in HK if you do need GP help, and are an ex-pat. It can be daunting to go to an Chinese doctor, or difficult to find an English speaking doctor. If you are in this situation, I would recommend OT&P. They are primarily a family practitioner service, with a number of specialists doctors, running four clinics across HK Island. Think of them as your GP back in blighty, but with more doctors, more appointment availability, better healthcare. To be fair to the UK's NHS, OT&P are private, so you will need to pay or produce your medical cards. Dr Trodd at the Wan Chai practice is particularly good, I have always found his patient care excellent and recommend him highly. He also has an amazing view out of his office, so if you are uncomfortable being prodded and poked, you can always have a look out of the window across the harbour to TST. Just a few details for your digestion; the clinic is an hours clinic, as in they only work "working" hours. If you need out of hours care, you'll have to call 999 (there is some out of hours care for obstetrics). They are a dispensing clinic, so all the prescription meds are on site. No trip to Mannings for you then. There is also a lot of on-site testing that they can do. Personally, I have always found it very easy to get an appointment, but fortunately, I very rarely go. Super healthy me - yeay!

Central Health was originally a obstetrics and paediatric health care service, but has since become…read morea full GP/family practice care centre. In fact, many patients are probably there for general practice health concerns now anyway. However, the practice has continued its excellent reputation in obstetrics and child health care, as if evidenced by the number of pregnant ladies and kids running around! Nearly all (I think bar one) of the doctors are trained overseas, UK, US, Oz, and are excellent healthcare practitioners. I wouldn't go if they were not! They cater heavily to the ex-pat crowd, with the entire practice operating in English. Whilst the practice is a general care centre, they do continue to specialise in obs and gyny, and paediatrics. They also extensively cover psychiatry, psychology and counselling concerns. Unlike many of the practices in HK, Central Health unofficially runs an out of hours service. Of course if you need emergency care, you should ring 999, but if you need "emergency" care from your GP, existing patients can get it from Central Health, depending on the goodwill of the doctor. Appointments are usually quite easy to get at the Central clinic. There are also two other practices in Disco Bay and Southside. As with most HK health care, you will have to pay or produce your medical insurance.
I should fair in saying this but I have never really had faith in chain medical service providers…read more They give me the feeling that they don't really care about their patients and they are just trying to bolster their coffers in asking you to go through absolutely unnecessary tests and so on. The fact that you seem to find them everywhere also gives me a sense that its medicine on the cheap. So you might be wondering why I actually bothered to go in the first place. That's because for one of my jobs I actually had to go to their centres for a pre-joining medical check. Needless to say their centre was big and clean, felt more like a showroom rather than a medical centre if I'm honest. I was led in to conduct the tests and they were extremely careful about what they did the whole way, despite the fact that they must all have to go through plenty of these humdrum tests all day long. The tests were completed very quickly and I noted that they had a dental practice at the same location. I thought to myself that since I'm here I might as well get that done as well; they actually had a place for me immediately and by the next hour I had it cleansed and looked at. All this brought to me the reality of the situation: we may all want a family GP who talks to us for half an hour and attends family weddings. The thing is though, nowadays we want good, cheap and quick medical service and UMP is right up there.

Well, help is at hand. UMP Healthcare Group is a large medical services group in HK. Part of their group offers outpatient medical services, or to the lay person, a local GP doctors service. There are a lot of these local surgeries across Hong Kong, so you should be able to find a location convenient to you. The medical centre at Wan Chai is particularly good, primarily due to the excellent service from Dr. Yiu. Whilst this is quite a "local" feeling practice, Dr. Yiu's and his staff's English is perfect, so don't feel intimidated to come here as an ex-pat. I always find it very easy to get an appointment here within a couple of hours of calling, and once at the surgery, the wait to see the doctor is usually short. The consultations are thorough, so you can be confident that you are getting the best care. The services they offer include; general and specialist consultation, health checks, some minor outpatient procedures, inoculations, and travel health advice. On site, they also have x-ray facilities, and a dispensing pharmacy, so you don't have to go elsewhere for your prescriptions. Should you require any other specialist care, Dr Yiu will refer you as required. UMP accepts a number of medical insurance schemes, both personal and employer, so it is possible to visit and have the costs paid directly by your insurer.
Every Hong Kong girl has her go-to Chinese herbalist and mine is Dr Kelly. She is very kind and…read morepatient and really takes her time to understand your ailments and explain her treatments in western medical terms despite the long wait in the zen-like waiting room. Dr Kelly comes from a family of Chinese and western doctors- the Chain ancestors were doctors back in Ching Dynasty and her husband Dr Chain is a doctor. Her philosophy is blending traditional Chinese medicine with western alternate medicines like aromatherapy and various natural supplements. She also sells Chinese healing herbal teas packaged in western convenience- shrink wrapped tea bags that fits easily into purses for regular consumption. The clinic also boasts a stone energy chamber which facials and yoga classes are held for energy optimization. Bottomline: Dr Kelly, yoga class in stone energy chamber, acupuncture for weight-loss. is awesome.

At the recommendation of another physio-acupuncturist (who wasn't qualified to…read moredispense Chinese Medicine), I started taking my mom here to help treat her mood swings and sleeplessness associated with Alzheimer's Disease. The treatments were very helpful in stabilizing my mom's symptoms. On top of that, the environment of Chain's is extremely warm, inviting, and calming. I love this place! Chain's has been in existence for literally hundreds of years - since the Qing Dynasty. It doesn't get much more legit than that, right? Dr. Kelly Chain and her husband head up the clinic, and they do a bang-up job. They not only offer the usual acupuncture/cupping/Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatments, but they also have branched out into beauty treatments, such as natural anti-aging (i.e., no botox, fillers, and all that other nasty shit that you see SO MUCH OF in Hong Kong . . . ugh) and spa-type treatments. They even offer a yoga class, which takes place in their "stone chamber," a room made of maifan stone with special energetic healing properties. If you're feeling really shitty and come in for a cupping and/or acupuncture treatment, they'll set you up in the stone chamber to give you a little bit of a boost from your treatment (and not upcharge you for it). I started coming to Chain's for cupping/acupuncture/TCM on a weekly basis, after I saw the results on my mom. The results were incredible. Without delving into too much detail, Dr. Kelly and her colleague Dr. Kay Tam (she is phenomenal!!!) were able to rebalance my chi using needles and TCM, and they corrected a hormone imbalance that I had been struggling with for YEARS due to my refusal to "correct" it with western medicine (sorry western doc, but you ain't gonna just put me on The Pill and think that's gonna solve all my problems). I also came down with probably the worst flu of my life while I was living in Hong Kong, and Dr. Kay Tam fixed me up good as new with 2 cupping treatments, a bunch of acu-needles, and TCM. Chain's has made me an acu/TCM addict (in a good way!), and I will be getting my fix every time I return to Hong Kong to visit. Bonus: most medical/health insurance plans offer coverage/benefits for acupuncture & TCM, so claim that shizz!
