You come here for exactly one thing: the grape dessert ice ("Purple In Love")…read more It won some sort of Gold Award back in 2009, and even if you're not a huge fan of grape, holy crap it's an intense, amazing burst of flavor, bite after bite. Hell, if they sold only one thing here-- or even three things-- this would almost be enough to earn them five stars. Sadly, they serve a lot more things here, and while quite a few are pretty good, none come anywhere close to the Purple In Love. The Ujikintoki is a fine dessert, but it's almost disappointing after the Purple In Love, and the same goes for the shaved ice-- good, but I can get good shaved ice lots of other places. The other thing that kills me? No wifi, and no bathrooms (at least not the few times I've been). Minor things, really, but for a trendy, modern dessert place...

But they didn't have tapioca the night I went which was kinda disappointing for my bf because that was something he was looking forward to. So, I ordered a strawberry pudding and he had a tofu thing with red bean and red date I believe. Not exactly sure what it was but there was a picture of it on the menu that look pretty good. Another thing about this place was their washroom at the time was out of service which made it pretty not convenient for us. We had to go somewhere else at around 10ish at night to find a washroom. The dessert itself was kinda meh here. Nothing too special about it and the price was kinda meh too. Not my favourite place to have dessert in hong kong but it was doable that night.

Since 1984, the bakery focuses on traditional treats. Loved the banana cake which is light and addictively delicious. The pan fried mochi with sesame seeds is so unique. The shop has a decent line that moves quickly. No surprise that it has been Michelin recommended and featured on Netflix. Next time, I'll try the wife cake.

There is a reason why this place is so popular: it feels very home-y with the booths along the sides of the shop and round family-style tables. We arrived around 9:20pm on a Monday night, with little to no line. Just a short 5 minute wait for tables to clear up. In that time, we noticed dessert bowls served in pretty yellow Chinese-style porcelain bowls. Once seated, a Chinese menu peered up at us from under a glass-topped table. I quickly asked for an English menu and a lady kindly brought it to us. I was originally eyeing the walnut cream 合桃露 or the almond cream 杏仁露, but considering my slight cough, decided against anything nutty and heavy, and went for the red bean sweet soup with tangerine peel 陳皮紅豆沙, and boy am I GLAD that I did. It wasn't too dense or too watery. The red bean was blended quite smoothly into the soup with small chunks here and there. There were no visibly large red beans as you would see in other places. While I previously preferred the large chunky "hong dao sa", I think my tastes buds have changed, and have found my go-to place at Yuen Kee. In addition, what I liked best was the use of the tangerine peel - which gave the red bean soup a new uplifting citrus-y smell and taste, and provided a pleasant and natural sweetness to the soup (compared with overly and unnaturally sweet ones elsewhere). My friend's sesame soup 芝麻湖 was just as delicious! Like my red bean soup, it was perfectly blended, and not too grainy, nor too thick or goopy of a sesame mixture. I only wish ALL the desserts came in the yellow bowls - ours came in plain white bowls. You can be sure I'll be back once my health is fully restored.

I love that they serve traditional Chinese desserts such as black sesame soup, glutinous rice balls in ginger soup, yams in ginger soup, etc. but also have a lot of new and innovative desserts such as jelly noodles. I also love the fruit basket desserts that I dub as "healthy" desserts. These have a variety of fruit and jelly in them with a mango puree. I've also has their black sesame soup with the glutinous rice balls and that was really good. I love that the glutinous rice ball with peanut filling actually has bits of peanuts in it so there was a nice texture to it. Although there is sometimes a wait, I think it's worth it if you're looking for a solid Chinese style dessert join.

The restaurant is small and is easy to miss as the door does not indicate any English name . Be sure to look for a black door and you will not miss it for sure. The house sits approx 22-25 people ( inclusive of 4 bench seating ). It is a rare to find cafe in the Tai Wai area so be sure to arrive early if you do not want to wait . The menu has extensive selection of deserts which unfortunately I did not manage to try after my onigiri set . They serve a few variety of set lunches such as Kobe beef rice set ( was a special menu) , hamburger need rice set ( chefs recommendation), karaage rice set ... Etc I tried the onigiri set and also the hamburger beef set . It was not bad but portions are small for guys ! My salmon onigiri set came with 2 onigiri ( one salmon and the other with corn and bonito flakes. The salmon onigiri had minimal salmon which was disappointing and I wished they toasted my onigiri !! Would have made it so much nicer Overall the hamburger set was yummy . I would definitely come back to try the dessert next time I'm in the area !!
