When thinking about Hong Kong, before coming to live here, I used to think of it as one largish island. This, as you have probably figured out, it complete nonsense. The territory of Hong Kong is actually made up of over 200 islands (Hong Kong Island being the largest). The other one that everyone who arrives in Hong Kong has been to, many without even realising it, is Lantau - the island the airport is located on.
When people choose to go to Lantau, it's often to visit Discovery Bay. This, predominantly expat enclave, is a car free zone so the best way to get there is by ferry.
The DB ferry departs from Pier 3 at the central ferry piers every half hour, and the crossing takes 30 minutes.
You can pay by Octopus card (Hong Kong's version of the: Oyster card (for the Londoners) or MYKI (for the Melbourinans), basically a pre-payed debit card used for public transport or in-store purchases at a number of businesses including 7/11 and Starbucks), and the ferry itself it clean and comfortable.
It's a pretty trip too. Sit on the left hand side for the best views of the city on the way out. You also get a close up look at some of the huge container ships parked up in the harbour, many of them being loaded by cranes on barges out in the open water.
If you've got your lunch, or a coffee with you, make sure you sit on the top deck. While if you're taking Lassie or Rover over for a walk, the front row on the lower deck is clearly designated as dog friendly. read more
