I read about Kindlifresserbrunnen in my guidebook for Switzerland, listed as a must-see…read morearchitecture in Berne. Aside from Zytglogge and Bärengraben, this structure topped my list of things to see during my day trip to the city. Kindlifresserbrunnen translates to "child-eater fountain," and it depicts exactly that: an ogre eating babies by the sack full. Not only was I enthralled by this concept, but I was amazed that it was actually a long-standing public structure and not a form of avant garde art. This would never be erected in The States... but I would love to see one appear anyways. Berne, keep staying awesome.

It's difficult for visitors to enjoy the history in such conditions. Regardless, it is a fascinating preservation of the tiny second-floor apartment Albert Einstein and his long-suffering wife Mileva shared with their infant son for four months in 1905. It was during this brief timespan that the famed scientist developed his most famous equation E = mc^2 that had profound effects on nuclear physics. The museum is a rare Swiss facility that actually provides information in English, which was greatly appreciated by all guests. Above the Einstein's preserved apartment on the second floor, the third floor which was originally unrelated to their history was added to the museum to provide information about the scientist's life without interfering with the layout of their former living space. That is a wide decision.

Beautiful park, terrific view of the city - but no Roses on our visit…read more My wife and I were recently on a tour of Austria and Switzerland and got a tour of Old Town Bern. Hector was our local guide and he took us to the Rose Garden. The view from there of the city was quite incredible. Such beauty of the mountains in the distance made this stop worth our while. When we went, the tulips were in bloom, but not the roses. Hector told us it was too early in the year for them. Be sure to go when more of the flowers are in bloom to fully appreciate the Rosegarten high above Bern.
