We stopped by at opening (18H) and asked if we could make a reservation for a bit later as we wanted to explore the city a bit more. The owner with limited English told us no reservations, just come back. We did just that an hour later and he was able to seat the two of us. The owner suggested a great Riesling. We struggled a bit with the menu in German since the options variety boards and not the typical entrees we had gotten used to so the owner sent out the cook to help us. We ordered a cheese variety plate and a plate with some meat varieties, cheese, and bread. Both included a few pickles and tomatoes. They were exactly the type of light fare we were looking for that night and what we expected at a wine bar. The restaurant was loaded with antique character and fit the image of what you would want a hidden gem winestub in an old city like Cochem to look and feel like. The same larger groups we saw waiting for the opening were still enjoying their meals and more wine which was easy to understand. We started with a glass each, but enjoyed it so much we got a bottle. Highly recommend Alte Gutsschanke!

I've been to a lot of restaurants around Germany, but this has to be the best. The food was wonderful, along with nice, friendly service (they got the wine wrong, but they did put it right without an argument - which in Germany is verging on the miraculous) and between courses they kept giving us stuff we hadn't even ordered (you've got to love that). A seasonal menu with a balanced mix of innovation and classics, accompanied by a really good selection of wines to suit most pockets and the most indulgent dessert I've ever eaten, I have to recommend this to anyone who's had their fill of Thai and Schnitzel. I can't comment much on the hotel accommodation, but I was so impressed with the restaurant that I will go back there and try it out.

Wow, this was probably one of the best meals I've ever had. You have the option of 3 or 4 courses. Everyone gets the same 3 courses that Chef Ingo prepares for the night but the 4 course option includes a soup course. I went with the 3 course option, which included an amuse bouche of fresh baked bread with a selection of meat spreads; prawns and mussels over cous cous with a sweet mustard sauce; raspberry sorbet palate cleanser; filet (prepared sous vide to medium rare perfection) over basil risotto; chocolate mousse, mango "puffy" (mango ice cream wrapped in some sort of gelatin coconut dough heaven), and melon ice cream. It was heavenly. Even with all the courses, the servings were generous but not excessive; I left full and satisfied, not gluttonous. After 2 glasses of wine each and one of the best meals I've ever had, I was pleasantly surprised when the bill was less than $100 per person. If you have any good allergies or aversions, this may not be the place to go because I heard Anna, the host/server, telling a couple, who asked about vegetarian options, that there are no substitutions.
