This is a really cool place to visit about an hour from Munich! We did the round trip up and down to experience the cable car and the cogwheel train to the top of Germany. It was very snowy conditions, so it was fun to see all of the skiers. But visibility up and down was a little hard due to weather. Overall, it was worth getting to ride the world record breaking cable car and see the views! The food was great in the restaurants too.

Try to go off-season - that's my number one recommendation. If you can't do that, then go very early in the morning. It was so crowded that it was difficult to fully enjoy the experience. We were crammed into the cable cars like cattle both up and down the mountain. It's beautiful once a space opens at the railing to actually see the view.

Zugspitze is the highest peak in Germany. And it's only an 1.5 hours away from Munich. If you're staying in Munich, this is a great day trip to take. During the winter months, it's a popular ski attraction too. So if you like to ski, this is a good place to go. Zugspitze is just under 3000 meters tall. I remember my tour guide making a point how it fell short of 3000 meters. I guess he wanted a round number. There's 3 ways up and down the mountain: you can take the gondola, the cogwheel train, and/or by hiking. If you're not hiking, I suggest taking the gondola all the way up, and then the cogwheel train down. Why? because you can ride the train all the way to Ebisee if you want to. The cogwheel train is an engineering marvel. The design was borrowed from the Swiss. It scales the mountain as it goes down. You get to see some nice sights when coming down the mountain. But it's like any normal train. The sights when riding the Gondola is pretty amazing. The gondola holds about 100-something people. They pack you in pretty tight. People get too excited in there because they all want to take blurry pictures of the landscapes they see. They push each other away to get photos. Why not just enjoy the view and the ride? They can get a good photo up the peak anyway. The peak is COLD. Make sure to bring a jacket, even during the summer months. I went there in July, and it was about 30 degrees Fahrenheit up there. They do sell crappy jackets up there (for a high price) if you forgot your jacket. But I suggest you bring your own. When you're at the peak, you'll get amazing views. You really have to hope the weather is clear, not cloudy, or you might not see anything. I suggest you wait if it is cloudy. Sometimes the clouds clear and you can see almost everything. There are 3 restaurants up in the Zugspitze. They have the German one, the Austrian one, and one in the middle. I only went to the German one. It's your typical, touristy, over-priced, mediocre food. But hey, that's your only choice, what else are you going to eat? The peak is split between Austria and Germany. You can walk over to the Austrian side if you want. Or if you came from the Austrian side, you can walk over to the German side. In between, there is this dude who owns the Müncher Haus. I haven't tried his restaurant. They were more expensive than the cafeterias they have on the German and Austrian sides. And they only have outdoor seating. It has no indoor seating. I wasn't going to spend 5 Euros for hot chocolate and freeze outside. But now I have to I wonder if it was that good. On the highest part of the peak, they have a cross. I think Bavarian constitution requires all peaks of mountains to have a cross. You can climb that if you want. But it's dangerous, and they recommend hiking gear. It looked pretty dangerous. I wasn't going to climb it with my sneakers. When you get up here, enjoy the magnificent view. When the weather is clear, they claimed you can even see the Dolomites, which is in Italy. I dunno if I did, but I enjoyed the amazing scenery.

It is such a magical place! I wanted to visit the Zugspitze mountain for many years and never made it. I am so glad we went today. The view is breathtaking! I have to admit that it is quite pricey to take the train up the mountain. One ticket runs at about 54 Euro. The train ride takes about an hour since it can only go so fast. Be prepared - the train will be in a very long tunnel for about 4-5 miles to get up to the top of the mountain. We had some French fries and beer at the mountain restaurant. The portion was more then generous. 2 ppl could have easily shared one portion of fries. The staff in the mountain restaurant was very nice and accommodating. Make sure to visit the little chapel. It is breathtakingly beautiful. Tip: Wear sturdy shoes. You will mostly walk on gravel/ rocky ground and can easily slip with a lighter or tennis shoe.

First I should warn you that it's 102 Euro for two people to go to the top of this mountain. If that doesn't scare you off then continue to read. I decided to drive as I wanted to be able to drive right to the cable car. I wasn't interested in the cable car train combination. Here's the exact address for the parking lot. It costs 3 Euros to park all day. https://goo.gl/maps/C5BmFbesHCJ2 I found the experience to be completely worth it. Although expensive the views of the lake and the mountains surrounding zugspitze are breathtaking. And I happen to go on an incredibly Clear Day. Once you get to the top of the mountain you can actually take a dangerous trip to go to the very peak of the mountain. I did it without climbing equipment and I can tell you I would never do it again. I'm talking about the peak that has the gold cross. A little bit of history. The original goal cross was shot to pieces by American soldiers who used it as target practice during the war. So the gold cross that's up there is a replica now. I also found the view of the lake below to be breathtaking. When we return to the bottom of the mountain we actually walked over to the lake which was a beautiful crystal clear Alpine Lake. Believe me despite the expensive zugspitze is worth it.

The view from up there on a clear day is simply stunning. It is hard to describe the view and the sheer vastness of the alps and the surrounding areas. There are multiple ways to get up the peak - train, cable car and of course walking. Go well prepared with warm clothes as the temperature is much lower when you get up to the top. I made the mistake of under preparing and was quite cold once I got up there. Also advisable that you wear good hiking shoes if you want to climb up the last bit of the summit and for your own sake don't try to be careless about it as the winds are high and cold when you get out there. If you have experience in Alpine walking you can do the two or three day hike up to the summit but, it is not easy and you need the correct equipment and experience before you do so. I loved the cable car ride and the view is spectacular. Did not enjoy the train as much on the way up as it goes through tunnels and there is little or no view on the way up. The cable car is not for the faint hearted but an incredible experience. The air is also thin up there so be prepared as it may not suit everyone. I did see some people struggle with breathing when they got up there. It costs about €50 to take the ride up and down so it's not cheap and the last transport down is at 4.30pm in the summer. This is a must visit and the scenery will speak for itself. I have got to the top of Germany's tallest mountain and I want to hike up to the top next time :-))

Truly breathtaking! In the midst of some December gray, we were lucky enough for the sun to appear the day we visited the Top of Germany. There are gorgeous mountains as far as the eye can see (4 countries' worth). And it's super easy to get to the top. We took the train to the cable car on our ascent. For the descent we took the train the whole way which includes a short cable car ride from the peak to the start of the train. The peak is the whole point. Yes, it's chilly. Yes, it's covered in snow and ice. In other words, it's practically perfect. And did I mention breathtakingly beautiful? Take your time. Linger. Soak it all in. There's also a cafe and a restaurant at the top to help you spend more time. We ate at the restaurant and enjoyed everything we ate. There are also a couple of gift shops with some fun swag. But really it's all about that view!

I can only give it four stars because I didn't get to try the skiing. My 3yo and I rode the cable car to the top and enjoyed the scenery from the observation deck. It is well worth the fare. In fact, we drove from Munich and I still consider it to be well worth it. It is seriously cold at the top, so make sure you're well bundled up. Also, the gondola is packed as tight as a tin of sardines, so if you're claustrophobic, you might want to consider taking the train instead. The restaurant at the top was what one would expect from a place with no competition. That said, the beer selection was great and the views are unbeatable. I highly recommend the cable car for families or anyone who wants to enjoy the alps but doesn't have the time/opportunity to ski.
Germany's highest point. This is a really cool place to visit about an hour drive from Munich! We did the round trip up and down to experience the cable car to the top of Germany. It was a nice day and the visibility was great! Was able to see mountain peaks in different countries. "Stunning views, well-maintained facilities, and friendly staff. the experience is worth every penny, especially on a clear day when the breathtaking vistas are at their best. The panoramic views of Eisbee Lake and the surrounding landscape are truly awe-inspiring, making the journey to the top a memorable one." Easily one of the best experiences I've had in other countries. I recommend visiting if you're within 2 hours drive. Definitely worth it! read more
There are some German words that are more fun to yell than others, and ZUGSPITZE is the perfect word to yell when you're talking about the tallest mountain in Germany/Austria. Appropriate responses to completing the 15-minute cable car ride to the top of this mountain with a group of 20 other people include: exclaiming, "Zugspitze," taking a deep breath of fresh air, shielding yourself from the 5G towers, vomiting, and/or drinking a beer. Luckily, they offer beer at the top! Why? Because of course they do! They also offer food in a few different settings (Austrian side vs German side, you'll see). If you're feeling super fit and looking for a challenge, you can climb to the top or to the bottom of the mountain using hiking gear. There's a way for visitors who took the easy way up to climb the last bit of the mountain to the apex for a sweet photo op, or you could, like, actually do all the work and grab a beer before you take a relaxing ride back down. During winter months this is obviously a hotspot (or cold spot) for skiing and winter sports. It is still very beautiful and awe-inducing to see this over the summer/fall, and still very cold. If you buy the all-inclusive pass from the ticket booth like my aunt and uncle did, you are given one round-trip ticket to the top of Zugspitze and back, then freedom to ride all of the other cable cars in the area and participate in some of the offered activities (like tobogganing). This is one of those things you have to see at least once. genießen! read more
If you need mountain therapy (hiking, walking or viewing) this is your place. It is the highest point in Germany and it does not disappoint. There are but a few ways to get there and the process may be a bit of a challenge in patients but it is well worth it. From Munich you can train it up to nearly 3/4 of the mountain BUT it will involve a few train changes the final being a "Cog wheel train". You can also get off at the base of the mountain and gondola up if you so choose. Yours truly chose to train up as far as I could go and then hopped on the little gondola and take the big gondola all the way down to Riffelriß. It can get a bit busy on the gondolas and trains so be patient and enjoy the view it is beyond amazing and everything you think of when you think of Bavaria. You can be as physical as you like as in you can hike, bike, walk, climb or stroll your way around. The sightseeing is perfection and a nice break from the crowds of Munich. read more

avoid in inclimate weather. had no idea but the train took north of an hour to get to the glacier restaurant and everything about that point was fogged in. train trip back was an excruciating 1 1/2 hours, much with only forest views or a dark tunnel. on a clear day, I would assume spectacular views but this experience is best expected to be in SLOW motion. far better options in my opinion if the weather is not clear, particularly due to the time and price point of $75 per person round trip read more

Zugspitze is incredible!!!! We enjoyed a day of skiing here years ago which I would describe as a once-in-a-lifetime, breathtaking experience!!! We rented some of our ski equipment at the base of the mountain in Garmisch, boarded a train to ascend the mountain, piled in the extremely crowded cable car, then got in line for the lifts to the very top. Incredible views! Really indescribable. "The Sound of Music" was going through my head [and I don't even like musicals]. It truly felt like being on top of the entire world! Although I had skied before, the slopes I had been to did not have the "T-lifts" like they have here. I think the T-lifts were only on the bunny slope. Needless to say, I got entangled in the T-lift and ate my weight in snow. Yup, Momma didn't name me "Grace!" The regular lifts were easy peasy to board both on and off. We enjoyed an extremely fun day of skiing, and in late April, the snow quality was surprisingly good. We enjoyed après ski eats and drinks, and sadly, missed the train at the end of the day, making for a LONG walk back to our hotel in Garmish. Still, a once-in-a-lifetime experience!! If you have an opportunity to visit Zugspitze absolutely do! read more

It's amazing to go up and down. But we bought a "Tageskarte" that we were told let's us go up and down for one day. We went up for a bit, came down for lunch and then they wouldn't let us up again, saying it's only for one trip. Avoid this scam. I'd like a refund, but they won't give it. read more

The Zugspitze is an amazing experience! I'd say once-n-a-lifetime, but they've made the process of getting to the mountain so "do-able" that you really could come back and relive it all over again. The main building at the peak has several restaurants (more like cafeteria-style where you pick your food and pay for it at the end of the line). They have a bar, Lindt hot chocolate, coffee, etc. Don't expect to be blown away by the food. It's barely hot and a bit salty, but, who cares? You're eating at the top of the freakin Alps! There are sled rentals that are extremely affordable (about 8 Euros for a single person toboggan, and 10 Euros for a sled for 2 people). I highly recommend renting a sled and then taking a break from the cold with a hot chocolate! That was probably one of our favorite moments the day we visited. read more

Zugspitze. What can you say that hasn't been said. Two ways to the top (and down.) Take the cogwheel train up to a stop that the skiers get out at. Then transfer to a cable car to ride to the Zugspitze. Once up there, you can take a different cable car that will take you all the way down to where the cogwheel train started. Anyways, at the top you can enjoy the views, enjoy some food, go outside and walk the terraces. You can cross a covered walkway to Austria. (Don't ride the cable car down into Austria without your passport.) There's really not a bad day to visit, though visibility might be better some days than other. It can be crowded when the skiing is good. read more
Nature's beauty at its absolute finest. Don't fret over the too high prices. Just justify it by doing it once. Be sure to shop gift shop at summit. Base gift shop is limited to warm gear only. Lesson learned the hard way. read more

This should be on everyone's bucket list! The views are simply breathtaking. Hundreds of mountain peaks from 4 different countries can be viewed from this highest peak in Germany. I visited in the summer and although a bit chilly at the top, I was not cold. In fact it was quite nice in the sun as evidenced by everyone sunbathing on the deck chairs. We rode the cable car to the top and the views on the way up were spectacular as well. There are several ski lifts/runs, but we did not ski. Instead we spent the day enjoying the sites before returning to our hotel in Oberammergau. Luckily we visited on a clear day. This is one landmark I will never forget. You don't wanna miss this amazing place when you come visit this area!! I went there in the end of June and it wasn't that cold on the top of the mountain. I brought a fleece jacket and wore a light long sleeve shirt and that was enough. (Actually it was 30 C in town and 12 C on top of the mountain). You can enjoy beer and German food with amazing view(yes, you don't need to bring your food. They have restaurants and cafes). read more

We have been in the area on several occasions before having the opportunity to visit. I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting, but the views from the Cable car were spectacular. We visited in August and I can confirm I was the ONLY person up top in a tank top. I thought the weather was perfectly comfortable and the sun was simply glorious. It was quite busy while we were there, but had ample opportunities for pictures. All of the museum and display signage is in German, so have your Google translate handy. There are several discoveries to view, altitude science and snow and stamps to keep in your passport or travel journal. 4 countries display their flags at each respective corner. Climb rung by rung to the tallest peak, view snow in the summer, and relax. The cable car is the quickest mode of transportation and definitely the most scenic, while the train allows a relaxing ride down the mountain and through tunnels which display the distance traveled. Easy to gage how steep and fast one travels. With kids, this is a must on the return trip. Parking is minimally priced and everything is next to Eibsee. Lots to do!! read more

Another must-do item if you are visiting the area. The views from the Zugspitze are simply indescribable, and well worth the price of admission. From Garmisch there is a designated Zugspitze train that runs to the town of Eibsee. From there, you have two ways of getting to the summit: a cable car directly to the top, or a cog train which runs through the mountain to the glacier station, then a short cable car up to the top. We took the cog train ride to the glacier, because, well... when else will we get the opportunity to stand on a glacier. From there a cable car takes you up to the main station at the peak. We were fortunate that it was a very clear day, as a guide was able to point out peaks as far away as Italy and Switzerland. I recommend taking the cable car down to lake Eibsee. The views going down are just as beautiful as the views from the summit. Have lunch at the Eibsee and enjoy the spectacular views all around. read more

Went here for a day trip from Munich. Recommended whether you want to ski or just admire the view. The views were amazing from the top. That alone made it worth it. The cable car ride was really cool. The skiing was pretty good and the ski rental prices reasonable. Unfortunately, it was quite difficult to find specific information online about what to do and how to get there. Also, the lines were extremely long on a weekday in December (maybe just because it was the week between Christmas and New Years?) - 45 minute wait to get on the train going up and over 2 hour wait to get on the train or cable car coming down. Also the food on top was expensive and not very good. read more

Zugspitze, the highest peak in Germany, deserves a positive review for its stunning views, well-maintained facilities, and friendly staff. Priced at 68 euros per person for the round trip, the experience is worth every penny, especially on a clear day when the breathtaking vistas are at their best. The panoramic views of Eisbee Lake and the surrounding landscape are truly awe-inspiring, making the journey to the top a memorable one. Upon reaching the summit, visitors are greeted with a selection of restaurants where they can refuel and enjoy a meal while taking in the majestic scenery. The presence of clean and well-maintained bathrooms further enhances the overall comfort and convenience of the experience. Finding parking is a breeze, with plenty of available spaces for visitors. This eliminates any worries about searching for parking and allows guests to focus on enjoying their time at Zugspitze. The facilities at Zugspitze are commendable, with clean and well-kept areas for visitors to explore and relax. The staff is friendly and helpful, ensuring a welcoming and enjoyable experience for all. In summary, Zugspitze is a must-visit destination for its incredible views, excellent facilities, and welcoming staff. Outstanding views from every point, fast and efficient lifts and very nice amenities--great lookout area at the top of the cable car and nice dining options. However, on a day with clouds I would opt to ski on the Garmisch side because you would miss out on the wonderful views. Also, I highly recommend take the cable car to the top of the mountain instead of the cog train. Its faster and most of the cog train ride is in tunnels on the mountain so you can't enjoy the mountain views. I'm from Colorado and having skied nearly every ski resort in the state, Zugspitze still ranks in my top favorite spot. read more
