So we went to Langton's instead, and began to wonder if there were any architects in Kilkenny with a clue as to how to lay out a nightclub with a view to making it conducive to an evening's libation. Well, there are competent nightclub designers, but they all seem to have been stolen away from under Langton's noses to go and work at Club 51. Whereas Langton's is a big barn of a place, Club 51 is nicely divided along the middle by the bar. There was a fair few in when we were there, but even if it was fairly empty you wouldn't notice it as much as in Langton's. There are loads of arches from churches decorating the place, which were imported over from France, apparently (this little tit-bit of information was given to us by a nice fella from Swords who had been living in Kilkenny for so long that he had gone native and was beginning to talk like a culchie. Hello Kelvin). There was only piped music when we there, and the nightclub itself wasn't opened mid-week (we were just in the bar section, it seems) but the place was definitely better than Langton's. All the memories and reasons came flooding back to me of why I don't go there and never will again! I was lured under the pretence that the drinks were 3euro-they weren't! Had to pay in and pay for your jacket - there was an angry looking bouncer who made sure I dropped in my jacket. So we ended up in the 80's 90's bar. The music was still the same as it was two years ago. You can be assured they play men at work, "land down under". I don't have a big problem with this sing but when it's played ad nauseum it can get annoying! Not only that though the DJ's skills involved pressing play on a selection of mix cds that were stacked beside the dj booth. I remember when it used to be jammers every Saturday night but this particular Saturday half the floors were closed and it was pretty empty which made it feel pretty pathetic and the crowd small crowd that were there mainly consisted of under agers. We stayed in four different cities, and traveled to many more, had lunch or dinner in a variety of pubs, and most, if they had music, were playing 2000's American pop hit junk. Some of those other pubs did have live music schedules for later evening, but we were trying to get our pub experiences at lunch and then 6p-9p range each day so we could get to sleep for the next day's exploring. It's also really nice that this pub is along the water (the river through Kilkenny) and some of the seating overlooks it via window, including open windows if you like. The kitchen closes early here, even on Fridays; 8pm during our June 2026 visit, so plan around that if you are intending to get dinner. Food-wise: * Really enjoyed the beef stew; good price no complaints. * Margherita pizza is great * Caprese Salad is not expensive but pretty mediocre * Seafood Chowder was very good * Tortellini was fine for Ireland Take all the above in context with the overall Irish food scene, which is mostly average at best. These feelings are based on seven days of eating around the country, so when I'm saying the beef stew was really good, that's compared to the rest of Ireland where I had one I liked more and a few others that were not good at all. Drink pricing is on par with other tourist cities; not bad. As with most pubs, beer and liquor selection is limited outside of the extensive Irish Whiskey options. For example, two rums, one bourbon, beers were what we encountered everywhere and no deviation. Service was similar to the rest of Ireland; initial order taking and then you have to flag someone down for anything after that.

We got in and snagged a table in the perfect location. We started off with food. The fish and chips were amazing. The fish wasn't too breaded or oily. The piece of fish was huge! The fresh green onions and homemade tater sauce elevated the dish. We stayed at the pub until Irish music started, which was so good! Hearing the tin whistle, guitar, and beautiful Irish singing was such a treat. We enjoyed a handful of cocktails and Guinness! Very enjoyable night!

The Core appeared to be the only nightclub open in Tullamore on a Thursday, so it isn't surprising…read morethat The Core is where we ended up. When you go in, a man frisks you, paying particular attention to your hips and ankles but not really the rest of you, so you could have two shoulders in your back pockets and not necessarily get caught. It was a tenner in (on account of their monopoly, I daresay), and once inside the door, the place was not dissimilar to the upstairs of that pub on Parnell St, the closest one to O'Connell St where they have all the gigs, you know the one I'm talking about. Anyhow, this left us the teeniest bit disappointed, as we were in the humour for a proper nightclub rather than a live music venue (though the band that were playing were a very serviceable covers band). We stood around for a couple of minutes until one my friends discovered a the nightclub proper, which the owners had for some reason contrived to hide away in the back. Maybe so you'll be pleasantly surprised to stumble across it as we were, who knows? The nightclub was contained on one level, but was really big for that. I have no recollection of what the music was like, but i do remember that there was one really aggressive short guy, and that the bouncers were all enormous men in tuxedos. And the women: who'd have thought that the Co. Offaly was home to so many fine young ladies? So, all in all, The Core made for an offaly good night (couldn't resist, sorry). The Boom Boom Room, that's the place on Parnell St that I was trying to think of. So yeah, just inside the entrance of The Core is like the Boom Boom Room, though that seems like somewhat of a moot point now.
