I initially thought this was the sort of place privileged suburban White women could come in and…read moredemand to see a manager but it turns out that I was making a homonym error. This humble Southeast Asian grocery caters to the Burmese refugees from the Karen State, and as such is very unique unless you're from Minneapolis (or the border region between Burma and Thailand). Turns out the pronunciation is Kah-REN (accent on the second syllable), and there's nothing unreasonable or biased about these people at all, quite the contrary. As the victims of genocide they seem to think the Silver City area of Milwaukee is a very nice place to end up though I would think that the other type of Karen (of viral-Internet infamy) would find the neighborhood very unpleasantly not Anglo (should I say...Angla?). It's all relative, you know. Certainly this shop is a peaceful place to visit, if you're looking for Southeast Asian ingredients especially specific to Karen cuisine there's no better choice. I also recommend shopping here if you're the sort, like me, who has fun buying groceries that are unfamiliar and not translated into English. Just across from the Domes and conveniently near to the Hank Aaron bike trail (though a pretty mean (uphill) - fun (downhill) ride is involved to get here from the trail.

As a picky pregnant woman this definitely fill my tastebuds with happiness. I love how the Spicy pork Pa ka pow tastes so much like the pa ka pow back in Thailand. Chef definitely did a good job at cooking this delicious dish. Definitely would recommend 10/10. The staff and workers were very welcoming and nice.

Their pork belly and chicken are a great deal and I love trying their new products in their frozen section (they always have the coolest ice cream)! They don't have a ton of fresh produce, but their cabbage and bok choy are such a great deal for a huge bag! They also have a pretty big snack and drink section as well!

A little less choice in Far East Asian ingredients, and little to nothing of interest to South Asian cooks. The assumption might be that anyone shopping here is feeding a clan because it's hard to get only enough vegetables for two humans, but the prices for fresh produce are so good a little waste doesn't bother me too much (especially since I compost). If you are single and not Asian, and think you're okay with American supermarket instant ramen, you need to rethink cheap eats and try some instant noodle soup from here. A few coins more will get you much tastier instant noodle soups, especially the ones without good English translation on the packages. Add some of the fresh vegetables and tofu or bean sprouts you get here and you can make a cheap meal nutritious and well balances. I guess technically bean sprouts are vegetables but noodle soups require more than two added ingredients I think.

Took a cooking class with Semolina. It was a nice experience, but honestly I felt like I didn't get…read moreto make very much pasta to take with. It wasn't even enough for two people for dinner. For the cost of the class, I would have thought I would have got a bit more. The other thing that disappointed me was the glasses are open to all ages of children. In my class, I was there with a middle school boy who somewhat took ownership of the class and wasn't behaving very appropriate for what I thought was an adult-only class. This was an event I purchased as an adult-friendly evening, I do wish this was stated when signing up for classes or at least offer adult-only or all ages classes. It just wasn't the vibe I was going for that evening and frankly was pretty annoying. Although, the owner did try to play down the boy's presence and kindly answer his questions, etc - I probably wouldn't take another class there unfortunately. I do enjoy the shop and the pasta is tasty.

Petra and Andy take such pride in their shop and it shows! We started wandering (and salivating over) their small but impressive selection of sauces, oils, salts, and Italian goodies. They have samples of most of their items, so definitely ask when you're in! The class started with Petra giving a brief overview of the general recipe and then we got our hands dirty almost immediately kneading the dough. The dough got to rest for a bit while we got to sip on some beautiful red wine and Petra taught us how to make a puttanesca sauce. When we went back to knead some more, Andy had magically cleaned the stations and set us up for the next round! On our next rest break, Petra finished assembling the puttanesca with some pasta she made earlier that day and we got a healthy serving of fresh pasta and puttanesca, followed by a sample of some of the most amazing Panettone I have ever had. The care that Petra and Andy put into their work is evident, and their commitment to supporting organic, high quality foods is remarkable. Looking forward to many more classes here!

I have been wanting to try their Italian beef for so long and I'm so glad that I finally did! I got…read morethe regular size, it was fully loaded and way more than enough. The beef was perfectly tender and well seasoned. I got the au jus on the side which I'm glad I did because as fresh and delicious as the roll was, it was pretty soft and not sturdy enough to hold all of that flavorful beef. The flavor of the au jus was incredible and it was nice to be able to dip and pour a little on top as I gobbled down. I also got the tomato salad and marinated mozzarella. The tomatoes were super fresh and juicy and all of the vegetables were crunchy and fresh! I only got one cucumber slice but at the same time I also ordered the smallest size so that's just how the cookie crumbled in terms of ratios. The mozzarella might have been the best I've ever had. The seasoning on the outside was amazing and the freshness and moisture was absolutely perfect. I tried the pizza slice at Brady st fest and it was pretty solid. The sauce had a slight sweetness to it and there was a very nice cheese to sauce to crust ratio. I love a good thick layer of cheese and this definitely had it! The Italian sausage was cooked perfectly and the seasoning was on point! The staff was super friendly and helpful. The inside of the store had a really unique feel, almost like I was in another country. I can't wait to go back to their deli and try more of their delicious food!
