Horrible!!! I selected them as the "mom's group" online had a few mentions. It went well until Ms Mathiesen left the practice. No one called or informed us, I had to call weeks later and we had to start all over since the person that took over was completely incompetent (wrong numbers what was agreed upon and salaries placed that was not ours but a copy of someone else). I would not go back and sign with them and had to use another legitimate and competent practice since Zimmer was terribly incapable of producing the correct divorce mediation. Unprofessional, unethical, incompetent, perception was clear favoritism and judgment to one party without knowing the reasons they were hired. They are over their heads with how mediation is suppose to work. Mediation is about reaching a settlement peacefully. They created more frustration and tension to an already difficult situation. Not a mediation divorce lawyer! They should dissolve that part of their business. When you are teaching them how to do their job and correct their mistakes, that's concerning. There are better mediation lawyers out their. Do your research and don't get caught up emotional when you start looking to hire a mediation lawyer. You pay for what you get! read more

I have never wrote a review for anything but stephanie mathiesen is the first. I used her for a custody case and when you meet her in her office she seems assertive,intelligent,bitchy and relatable which I thought would be a good thing. She sure proved me wrong. She was late multiple times and when she is in court she isnt effective in the leastt. On top of that she couldn't be less reliable when it comes to carrying out what she says she's going to do. I switched from using her to legal aid and they got me the results I hired her to get. She puts the sleazy in "sleazy lawyer". I hired Stephanie to assist me with a custody order, which she did. It was a fairly simple process and all of my documents were filed the same day as my consult. We had a virtual court session which went in my favor and we were done. Since October 6th, I have been emailing Stephanie back and forth requesting a refund on my remaining retainer. Her emails are "I will get it to you tomorrow." "I will get an updated bill for you". "I am out of the office and will get to it when I return" blah blah blah. I could have handled this case myself but as a single mother of 2, I simply don't have the time so I hired her. With that being said, she is now taking advantage of me. I am seeking other matters to have a refund on my retainer as she isn't handling it. EDIT TO ADD: I have contacted Stephanie multiple times regarding this matter. She told me if I took down the review, she would pay me an additional $150 towards my refund and she told me a check would be mailed out. I decided not to move forward with removing the review and I just wanted my refund back. She told me on November 8th that the check would be mailed the following day. It is now November 22nd and I still have not received the check. I followed up two times with no response from her. read more

I usually leave reviews when I have a positive experience with and like to share my experience to help business and individuals In this case I feel it's my duty to say PLEASE do your diligence on this firm. My life is far more complicated after I hired this firm to protect my best interests and my child's . I was told motions were being answered and petitions were made on my behalf but NOTHING GOT DONE. Got the run around when I called . the attorney was always out sick . The first red flag was not getting notified about my first court date until 40 mins before i had to appearbin the courtroom. And S. Mth was surprised iwas unaware bc an email was swntat 10:44pm the night before. When in the courtroom it was a complete disaster because the attorney had looked at my case and had no plan on how to help me at one point asked me what should we do. They were very good at packaging and Mailing copies of paperwork the opposing counsel sent them. best yet I have no idea how I accrued at $14,000 bill for what I don't know . besides showing up in court lost , scrambling at the last minute the only work that was done was making copies of actual work that was done by the opposing counsel. In business a first impression usually indicates what to expect in the future. In this case it was a false impression. Stephanie Mathiesen was personable, professional for the first few months of the divorce process. Family Court issues were rolled into the Supreme Court divorve case. After that the real Stephanie Mathiesen came through. Two times given 24 hour notice of upcoming court appearences, three times last minute notices of hearings being continued or adjourned. I remedied this by using the Web Civil website and seeing the dates for myself. The first major issue was at a court mandated mediation when I found out Ms. Mathiesen failed to give the other attorney my statement of net worth that I filled out 6 months earlier. This then snowballed into being asked to submit the same financial documents multiple times while failing to get requested financial documents from the other party. Other issues ignored were not following through on my challenge of the other party's expenses and income ( math didn't work ): I had to supply 3 years of expenses and income, the other party was supposed to as well, after multiple follow-ups was advised she didn't persue due to cost. A professional attorney would have told their client the cost and let them make the decision. I was promised I'd receive my share of a NY State tax rebate that my wife refused to give me. This never happened. Her lack of engagement was the same for the Stipulation of Settlement. Stephanie gave me a finished document without ever asking for my input. To make matters worse it was submitted to the court even though the other party didn't comply with supplying financial documents. These weren't received until I contacted the judges's office directly and advised them of having received a false document. Other issues were promised return phone calls that were never made, and the capper is I had to advise her when the Judge Disposed of the case. My only decision now is whther or not to send to a complaint to The Suffolk Bar Association. read more

After a meeting at Zimmer & Mathiesen and giving Stephanie Mathiesen $1,500 of a $2,000 retainer I felt I would be well represented in my custody and support cases. Four days later I received a call from Stephanie telling me it is a bad idea to drive my son to school while the case is still in court. She then said she would call me on Monday. This was the first red flag. She never called. I waited till the end of the day on Tuesday and still no call. Stephanie had adjourned my case on 9/25/18 so I was anxious to know what the new date was. After still no communication I sent an email on 10/3/18 asking what the date is.Stephanie returned my email a few minutes later telling me she scheduled a conference on 10/10/18.With no mention of when my next court date was I let her know I will call the court myself and get the new date. Stephanie then emailed me on 10/3/18 and said she did not receive the new notice and still did not know what my new court date is. When I called the court I found out my new date was 10/10/18 the same day she said she already scheduled a conference without my knowledge. I was upset because this would have forced me to adjourn the case again. Meanwhile my son and I are suffering from an unfair visitation schedule. I know now that she scheduled the conference with my ex-wife's attorney on 9/28/18. I know for a fact my ex-wife knew the new court date on that same day. So either during the conversation between the attorneys on 09/28/18 there was no mention of the upcoming court date and Stephanie scheduled the conference on her own, Never confirming with me. She didn't even tell me about it until I asked her what my court date was. She finally told me 5 days later on 10/3/18 about the conference. So either she is incompetent and scheduled the conference without knowing the court date or she lied about not knowing the court date to benefit the opposing consul and was going to string me along to the last minute before i had a chance to back out. It wasn't easy I finally got my court documents back. HOWEVER Stephanie and her partner Todd Zimmer still charged me $672.50 for nothing. The worst part is that there is a brilliant 12 year old boy who just wants to spend time with his dad. His dad borrowing money in order to have a fighting chance in court and these disgusting people charged me money for nothing. My only hope is that in the retainer agreement it says no legal services will be provided until the $2,000 retainer is paid. It never was. So lets see what small claims court says. None the less it is my recommendation to stay far away from Stephanie Mathiesen and her partner Todd Zimmer of Commack NY. read more
