The service is great, with an endless supply of tea/coffee and friendly staff and excellent hairdressing. If you want a colour it can take a while but not really much longer than any other salon. Avant Garde on Queens Drive is both a men's (on the first floor) and ladies hair and beauty salon…read more Prices are fairly average. I am not particularly adventurous, I don't get colour or perms, but a cut and finish generally does me nicely. If you go for a graduate stylist it will cost you £17.50 which I just can't complain about. The final finish is pretty good. If you want to go for the top of the top (the director) you will have to pay £31-34 which I still cannot complain about. I have paid £45 before, at other hairdressers. I haven't had any treatments at Avant Garde but there is a good selection - hydro-active mineral salt scrub, enzymatic sea mud wrap, body therapy hydro pack, body massages (full body or back, neck and shoulders), hair removal, tanning, eyes, hands and feet, nail enhancement and ear piercing. I think the scrub and mud wrap sound pretty good!

However I've been coming here for over a year now and won't go anywhere else. The atmosphere's great, v friendly and lovely decor, but the main thing is that the cut is always great. Instead, the stylist nearly ripped half my hair out attempting to comb it (god knows how - I have generally lank, straight hair) and then announced that I must've done all sorts to my head as my hair was like wire wool. At this point, my patience was thin, and then I asked her what she was planning to do to condition and treat my hair before she trimmed it. She told me she would just slap some conditioner on and leave it to soak in. Bloody marvellous, I thought. And that is literally what she did. I got a head full of sloppy conditioner, and then they put me under a heater. Now, I may not be a hair expert, but I'm pretty sure drying conditioner onto your head isn't the best way to go about things. After leaving me baking for about half an hour whilst she gabbed to a colleague, my attentive stylist came back, and after rinsing out the caked-on conditioner, proceeded to cut half my hair off, claiming it was 'beyond rescuing'. I can't remember how much they charged me for this delightful experience, and it was a good few years ago now, but the salon is still going strong so I must only be one of a few disgruntled customers!

Fortunately, my experiences in Voodou for Men have been much better. The stylists are knowledgeable and friendly, covering the usual hairdresser topics ("You going away this year?") but also branching away from those types of small talk as well. In my experience the haircuts I've received have been a bit hit-and-miss but I get the feeling that if you go in with a definite idea the stylists would be more than happy to meet your requests. Some stylists can be quite expensive but the loyalty card they offer represents good value for money (if you can afford 7 haircuts first) and they also offer student discount.

The complimentary head massage and wash, as well as tea and coffee is also a nice touch. I had become something of a regular over the past year and a half, but due to tight times (as we all have), I scrimped and went somewhere cheaper. I ended up deeply regretting this decision after my hair was massacred elsewhere, so I ended up going back to the hair cafe as they are the best I have encountered in Chester by a LONG shot!! ::Top marks::

The outside of this establishment doesn't look great and the inside decor is far from impressive also. The staff here are friendly enough but they seem to have a sense of self importance which does not really match the surroundings that this salon is in. In essence this is the kind of place you can find in local communities all over the country yet Tony's seems to think it is better than the rest without really doing much to back up the point. The prices here are a little above average for a service which is not and the waiting times can be extensive. If this was a simple and unpretentious hairdresser which claimed to be simply that, then it would be fine but my only problem is that Tony's thinks it is so much more. One word best describes Tony's pretentious.

Tony was terrific as I was having a lot cut off my hair and was quite nervous about a dramatic change. The staff are very friendly, greeting you warmly when you enter. They have a range of options available for a hair cut to match your budget. The Senior Stylists are the most expensive as the Junior Stylists are the cheapest. The shampoos and conditioners used and on sale in Aura are the expensive Tigi range. They smell delicious and make your hair feeling amazing. I've bought products from here when there has been a special offer for a shampoo and conditioner set and loved them. The stylists are very professional and really take the time to ensure you, and they, know exactly what you want. The trainees wash you hair in preparation for the cut and give you a lovely head massage when they apply the conditioner. The stylist then takes over to begin your cut. Again they take their time making sure they give you an excellent cut, blow drying it exactly how you want it. They also give you tips on styling your hair when you've washed it, and different ways you can wear your new style. They ask if you want any products and if you say yes they will recommend the best products for your hair, but if you decline they do not pressure you into buying anything. An excellent professional salon.

She was apologetic, but still, my glasses that are integral for me to see were broken. I couldn't see the end result of my haircut and was still charged the full price for it. (I needed assistance home/to cross the road because I could not see.) No manager was at the salon so called I the next business day to speak with one, but the person I spoke with was very suspicious and only after a lot of pressing was given the name of the manager. I also had to post to Facebook to try and get more information. I called again when I was instructed to, but again no manager was in. Finally after leaving my name and number did a manager finally call me back. And she was neither friendly nor willing to resolve my issue... I was not only blamed for my glasses being broken, but accused of knocking them off myself and causing their breakage. I challenged the manager; when one gets their haircut they tend not to move, but the manager was still defensive and blamed it on me. Finally it was agreed she would talk to her stylist and call me back to "verify" my story, but after two weeks I have not heard anything. It is shocking and I can't imagine what would happen or how a customer would be treated if an actual hair styling mistake was made. Customers beware.

The staff are very welcoming when you enter the building and do actually seem happy to help. I had my hair cut here once and the stylist and apprentice really went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable and happy. When my hair was washed I was also given a head massage which was absolutely amazing. I was provided with a drink and a magazine whilst I was there. The stylist was excellent. She actually listened to what I wanted and took her time doing the cut, rather than giving the impression that she was rushing to get me done and out of there, as I have often felt in other salons. When my cut was expertly dried I was extremely happy with the result, it was exactly what I wanted and actually even better than the picture I had shown her. Toni & Guy is more expensive than many city centre salons but it is worth it for a treat. You do really feel that you are receiving the best service and the staff actually care about their customers.

As famous as it is, this branch in Whitechapel meets all their high standards with friendly, welcoming and confident staff to assist you. I've not been here to use any of their services but by word of mouth, I have heard so many excellent remarks about this particular studio. Staff were extremely helpful when I made enquiries about their hair services, however my hair is so simple that I never need anything special doing. Perhaps I could do with some highlighting in the future! At least Toni & Guy is a place I could probably trust.
