We booked a table for 15 persons in advance (an informal business dinner) without any problems. Friendly and attentive personnel, good atmosphere. The African (Senegalese) meals are not completely authentic (they deliberately adapted the menu to the German/European taste, I was told), but still sufficiently 'exotic' to be convincingly African (at the same time, my colleagues had no problem finding a meal that they liked, probably because the meals are 'understandable' for us Europeans). My (vegetarian) thiéboudienne was - according to the waiter - one of the more authentic dishes and indeed it was nicely spiced (some hot sauce on the table made it complete) and really something that I hadn't eaten before. My colleagues were very enthusiastic as well. The restaurant was full and space was quite limited. One could consider that as a disadvantage, but actually it is a sign that this (relatively new) restaurant has become quite popular. The staff was very busy but at all time attentive. Definitely a good place for a business dinner, but also a good choice for a dinner for two. Eating out in Germany is almost always quite cheap and at least affordable. This restaurant is no exception. 10 to 15 euro for a main dish and decently priced beverages are no reason for staying away from Kilimanjaro.

Since there was a party of 8 ahead of us, the kitchen decided that they would finish off that table first before even getting started on our appetizers. After more than 40 minutes there was still nothing in terms of food on our table. We decided to cut our losses and leave the restaurant. I cannot recommend going to this restaurant.

I Was not disappointed, it's a place frequented by locals and visitors alike. Not having much German in my vocabulary, the spoke more English than I speak German. Service was quick and portions plentiful. I had jagged schnitzel it came with fries a small salad and mushroom gravy. It was excellent. I ordered some red cabbage it was delicious. The atmosphere is casual old style. If you want solid local food do yourself a favor and come here

I walked by here a few times, and planned to come and check it out, but there are so many other places I want to eat in Hannover that I kept putting it off. Finally, one evening, as I walked around the city center, undecided as to where I wanted to eat, I walked by this place again, and this time, I opted to go in and see if I could get a table. While I wanted to sit in the Biergarten in the back, nothing was available, so I opted for a table in the front, next to an open window. I ordered a cold Hefeweizen and perused the menu. The waitress spoke good English and I washed her recommendations, and she said that the ribs were a favorite. I was ready for something different than German food for a change, and I know the Germans can make some good ribs, I took her advice and ordered the ribs- I asked if I could get them without their "barbecue sauce" and she said of course. And I am glad I did- German barbecue sauce is very different than American barbecue sauce! The ribs were spectacular! The fries hot and crispy! This place was so good that I came back the next day to meet friend for dinner. Now I have added yet another favorite restaurant to my Hannover list!

Wow. What can I say about this place? Where do I even begin? I guess at the beginning!…read more I first came here in 1997, as a guest of the company I was working with, that happened to be located in Hannover. It was already their go-to, so I knew it would be good- but I wasn't prepared for how good. First of all, it's not on a main street, and even then, the entrance is hidden. But once you walk inside, it's a new world. There's a bar in the middle, and then tables all around it. It's old school meets modern, dark wood, and the walls are adorned with porcelain signs from the past. It seems dark, but it's lit well enough to see. The menu (they have English ones as well) is extensive, and I have had nearly everything on it- every single thing I have had has been fantastic- but my favorite is the Steak Forsthaus- served in an iron skillet with potatoes...my mouth waters thinking about it. I came here upon every visit to Hannover, which was very frequently for many years, until I moved on from the company, yet I still found myself in Hannover every year or two, and made a visit here. Several years have passed since my last trip to Hannover (thanks, Covid), but I finally made it back this summer- I walked in and it was like going back in time. The only difference this time was that the Steak Forsthaus was served on a plate, but it was just as good. I brought this fact up to the waitress and she said they still had the iron skillets, and on my next visit, they served it to me that way- now that's service! I cannot say enough good things about this place, the food, the service, the decor, the ambiance- as good as you will find. Do yourself a favor- find this place, walk in and order a cold beer and take in the atmosphere...

This is certainly the best gutbürgerliche (traditional German food) restaurant in central Hannover…read moreand may be one of the best of this increasingly rare type in all of Germany. The Schweinshaxe and Eisbein are especially fine, the former exploding with molten fat from perfectly crisped skin. I rate Max W. at five stars for doing what it does so well, but to enjoy it--indeed to eat there at all--you must adhere exactingly to its Unwritten Laws. Despite its working man's prices and an interior looking like a down-at-heel Studentenkneipe this is a feinschmeker (gourmet) restaurant and must be treated as such. You need to reserve by telephone at least several days in advance, and humbly offer them an appealing number of diners (ideally either four or six: they have only 25 places at tables and four stools at the bar and must be ruthless about maximizing their yield: do not even think of asking for a table for one; they will simply refuse (reserve--and you do still need to reserve--a seat at the bar). Persons wandering in without a reservation hoping for a table--and especially tourists without German--are treated with fine forthright traditional north-German rudeness: "Nein! Nein! Weg! Weg!" (Sometimes in chorus.) This is a performance--once one has actually received permission to eat there the staff are warm and charming in a rough, Hannover, sort of way--but, I guarantee you (having suffered this) that you will not recognize the tone of your expulsion as a jolly act when it occurs, nor will you notice the ironical pleasure the regulars are taking in your fate, because you have just become a familiar--three or four times an hour--and well-loved part of the evening's entertainment. This is the same particularly German form of quiet rejoycing at the artful humiliation of others that has made Sven, the cruel bouncer at Berlin's legendary Berghain dance club, a figure of national affection. Those refused entry at Max W. become a special German sauce on the already superb food. And whether you end up as a diner or back on the pavement with your head spinning, either way you have had a perfectly authentic Hannover experience.

Best part about it: perfect alternative to restaurants in the Old Town if you're staying at the Courtyard. I ordered the shrimp entree that comes with tricolore sauces, which although they sound simple, were bursting with flavor and offered a great contrast ... pesto, chunky marinara, and something sour-cream based. I was impressed with how many pieces of shrimp were actually on the plate! Very generous - I was definitely stuffed. Oh and if that wasn't enough, the dish came with an equally delicious side salad and roasted baby potatoes. My coworkers got the special - which was a viener shnitzel in a creamy mushroom sauce (and even though I've had more shnitzel than I care to mention in Germany, but this gourmet version was absolutely fantastic). Bruschetta appetizer was a good classic and very fresh, as was the amuse bouche - a gazpacho variation. We had a wonderful bottle of white wine (can't remember the type), the setting and atmosphere were very cute and service attentive.
