This place is a total scam. They charge $20 just to pay for drinks using Tap, and tequila shots are $30 each. The worst part is there's a $20 cover, and if you get lured downstairs for a lap dance, that's another $20 just to enter. My fault for not asking the price--I was going off what I'm used to, usually $100 to $200 for a lap dance. Instead, she tried to charge me $800, including the time spent negotiating. The club is owned by a man named Allen but he's not around much. Currently, the daily operations are managed by Greg R, known as Tiny, and Pedro. Instead of providing a safe environment for both patrons and dancers, they have exploited and manipulated the club's atmosphere for their own financial gain. Under their management disturbing incidents have occurred, including a mentally disabled man losing his life savings, patrons having their drinks spiked and losing a substantial sum, and a student being robbed of his car fund, totalling $6000, which he had in his backpack. Please be aware that the management ALLOW AND CONDONE the dancers to scam the patrons, as long as they receive a cut of the stolen money. So two girls came by, pressured my friend into the champagne room, whatever, we thought he'd be out in a few minutes. Normally it's $20 cover + $20 per song, so a total of $40 to go into the room. My friend is back HALF AN HOUR LATER with a terribly sad expression on his face. He goes to the ATM and takes out $1200 to pay the strippers. $1200??!!!!! FOR HALF AN HOUR? There were two strippers in total with him so it would be double the price, but PAYING OVER 1000 DOLLARS FOR TWO GIRLS IS RIDICULOUS. Apparently he had to remove his phone (because it hurts when the strippers sit on him) and his watch, so he had no way of knowing how much time he spent inside. We thought he DIED or something because he spent such a long time in the basement!!! We called and texted but with his phone gone obviously he couldn't have heard us. Look- we're pretty young. I was in this club like 7-8 times and I was scammed 2 times. First time, by $40 by a cheeky dancer (she counted 10 songs instead of 8). Second time, very recently by a very cheeky Chinese dancer with a sexy slim body who counted 5 songs instead of 2. In my other 3 visits, I had awesome sensual lap dances with cute well-mannered girls. I have no complaints on bartenders, waitresses or security. Moreover, security once took my side in case of an outright scam and returned the stolen money. I have 3 pieces of advice: 1) don't go for lap dances with abrasive, pushy girls, most likely they are scammers, 2) don't pay upfront for more than 2 songs, 3) always keep track of songs. In case of an outright scam, if you can support your case, report to security, they may help you or at least take note of the dancer. Here's my experience: I went in with a couple of friends on a quiet weekday night. No cover fee, which I was happy about. But you have to buy a drink, which is expected in these type of establishments. One of the girls approaches our table and seduces me to go downstairs. Her friend tags along without me asking, but she was fairly attractive so I just go with it (being fully aware that I'll have to pay double). I go for about 6 song with the two girls and decide that that's more than enough. Usually the rate per son here is $25 per song per girl. I was expecting to pay about $300. Well once we got the the ATM they told me that I was down there for a hour and that I now owe them $800. This seems to be a reccuring problem with Zanzibar that the owners are very reluctant to fix. One silver lining to my horrible experience is that the bouncer was a great guy. I am fairly young and it's only my second time in a strip club. The bouncer, seeing I was in distress, asked me what happened. After I explained the situation, he knew that I had just been scammed and got me some of my money back. Mr. Tiny if you ever get a chance to read this you are a good, honest man. If they only let this man run the club then it would be a much more successful hot spot in Toronto. I used to go here a lot when I was a student. I will say that it's not as good as it used to be in the 1990s, but where is?. It is better than the Brass Rail because more of the girls here are natural, not so much "enhanced" boob jobs as you find at the Rail. I prefer them natural. The drinks are kind of expensive ( like $20 for a double whisky), but you are paying more for the ambiance/services than you are for the actual alcohol. They charge a $20 cover to go to the VIP area to have lap dances. There is absolutely no sexual touching going on (they are very strict about that). I know the drinks are insanely expensive, so to come pre-loaded, and that everything inside is designed to relieve you of your money. It was payday, so I felt I could drop some cash on essentially nothing, so I went. I budgeted $150 for it, and took $100 out of their ATM upon arrival. Eventually some of the dancers came over, chatted us up, and I agreed to some dances. She took me into the VIP area, which had a $20 cover, which I had expected as it's pretty standard. The lounge bouncer and the dancer both told me it was $20/song. Which is also the standard rate for Toronto. So I get my dances, and after 5 songs I tap out. That was my $100 that I'd intended to spend. She says to me, "we've done about 30 minutes, do you just want to take it to 45"? I think that's a little strange, because in other clubs if there was a premium service above and beyond the regular VIP lap dances, they do price things by time blocks, as opposed to per song. And that's something you specifically arrange with the dancer. I had been told by both the bouncer and the dancer that I was paying by the song here. Now she's talking in time block? I say "how much is 30 minutes"? I had 5 songs - this should cost me $100. Even if I'd misjudged and I'd done say, 7 songs, it should still be $140. She answers "30 minutes is $240". !?!?!?!!!!!!!?!!??!?!!?!?!! So, needless to say I stand the f up. I was flabbergasted. I've never had anything like that happen in a club before. I pay the lady, of course. Having to take another $100 out the ATM machine...which was its own rip-off. I expected a high fee on the ATM transaction, but the screen popped up saying $2 service fee. I was pleasantly surprised, as that's fairly low for the downtown core. When I checked my bank account this morning to figure out how many weeks I'm going to be living on ramen noodles after paying $240 for $100 worth of dances, I see a $10 service fee on each ATM withdrawal. So the service fee wasn't just $2. It was $2 PER BILL DISPENSED. What?!!! Needless to say, of all the Toronto strop clubs I've been to, Zanzibar took the cake for biggest rip-off. Yes, we're aware we need to buy drinks to watch the show. Yes, we have every intention to do so - can we at least LOOK at the menu for five minutes first? My friends and I have walked pass this place many times and had been curious if it matched up to other strip clubs like Brass Rails or Lancaster. Just this past weekend we decided to check it out. To make a long story short, we were disappointed. We were forced to choose seats near the back of the venue and had a very poor view of the stage. The selection of girls was disheartening as most of them were no where as good looking as the servers. I would have to say that the service from the servers was great. If I had to pick one word to describe my experience at Zanzi, it'd be 'average'. Pros: -- Girls were fairly attractive (dancers, waiters, and those who walked around). I wasn't stunned by any means, but they were nice. -- No cover. -- We went on a late Sunday night and that's also comedy night. They had a few local stand-up acts. They weren't amazing but what do you expect. I found it fun/funny. Cons: -- Drinks are pretty steep (around $8/beer) but there's no cover so they have to make it up somewhere. -- Some of the girls got bitchy/snooty when we didn't spend a lot. I don't know if this was an act or if they were actually upset. But I didn't let that bother me too much. -- Most of the stage dancers were pretty flat-chested. I will highlight pros and cons ans give my conclusion. Pros: -downtown on yonge. Easy to find. -decor and overall ambience fairly good -attractive girls Cons: -poorly trained bouncers -poorly trained staff ( inconsistency in drinks. Either too strong or too weak) -girls dont know how to engage customers -girls dont know the meaning of entertain much less dance. They need dance choreography coordinator. -poor management. (You dont hire a carpenter to do an electricians job) - very tense and uncomfortable environment. -pressured into buying drinks -pressured into services. -extremely high drink prices (all strips clubs have high prices but these were exorbitant) -no entertainment and very poor selection of music. Conclusion: Please note i have been General Manager for 2 top brands and so i am little harsher because of what i expect from any gentlemens brands. Especially one with a rich history like Zanzibar. I would say it will be either sold or quite possibly be shutdown within the next few years, if they do not evolve from their current format. What they have is unsustainable and cant make real money by running customers away. Also you can have strip-club brand without offering sex but it has to be creative in maintaining its clientele. This brand currently has no clientele other than cheap stragglers who will argue over bills every-night and cause difficulty in paying the girls. I wish the brand luck and might just contact Mr. Cooper and offer my services. In all honesty there is no strip-club in Canada yet to impress me other than Wanda's in Montreal.
