We drove to High Point, NC yesterday from Ohio because we were looking for a very special Oriental rug and knew about Zaki Oriental Rugs from having bought area rugs there almost 20 years ago. Mr. Awais Choudry and his assistant showed us dozens of choices after we gave him some of our criteria. The sheer number of rugs and the convention center size showroom is quite impressive! We narrowed choices down to an exquisite Oushak lightly muted fine Pakistan rug. We were so happy to find what we had been unable to find locally where we live. Mr. Zaki himself came out to assist, explaining some of the intricacies of the by hand manufacturing process which was way more interesting than I can relay here. Having lived in the Middle East and India, I enjoyed a plethora of handmade Oriental rugs of all grades and kinds, but was able to bring only one home. Zaki is a true gentleman and humanitarian. Having donated the bulk of his fortune, including his massive stock of not to be matched oriental rugs, to charity, he is now liquidating that stock. He educated us on how to select a rug of good quality such as whether it's hand woven or machine made, materials used, and knots per square inch. it was fascinating!
