I've been training in another martial art for the past 16 years, and I'm pretty particular about where I choose to train. I've been in a lot of gyms over the years, and every time I walk into 148, I genuinely look forward to getting on the mats. The instruction is practical, the atmosphere is relaxed, and it's a welcoming environment whether you're brand new or highly experienced. I was honestly skeptical about open mat at first. I've seen how ego driven those sessions can get at other gyms, and that's not something I wasn't interested in. I couldn't have been more wrong here. Open mat at 148 is supportive and motivating. Training partners will stop mid roll to offer helpful feedback like "hey, fix this" or "try it this way for a better result." The focus is on learning, control, and making each other better, not proving anything. There's a lot of pride in this school, and it shows. The mats are clean, the gym is well maintained, and there's a clear standard for how people train and treat each other. The people here are solid. From students to other instructors, everyone is respectful, helpful, and easy to be around. It feels like a team, and it never feels unsafe or intimidating. I've also done private lessons with Ed, and that's been a great experience. He makes sure you actually retain the material, not just run through techniques. The lessons are tailored to whatever your outcome is, whether that's improving specific positions, sharpening fundamentals, or applying jiu jitsu in a more practical, real world way, which was exactly what I was looking for. He takes the time to explain the "why" behind everything and makes sure it sticks. Ed is great overall. He runs organized classes, explains techniques clearly, and makes sure everyone feels welcome from day one. He does an excellent job building both skill and culture, and it really shows. If you're looking for a jiu jitsu gym with strong instruction, clean mats, good people, and a professional, ego free environment, I'd highly recommend 148 Jiu Jitsu.

The instructors are knowledgeable, patient, and really take the time to break things down in a way that makes sense whether you're a complete beginner or have prior experience. What stands out most is how much focus there is on growth--both physically and mentally. It's not just about technique, but also building confidence, discipline, and resilience. The training environment feels safe and supportive, with partners who genuinely help each other improve rather than compete against each other. The facility is clean, well-maintained, and organized, which makes training even more enjoyable. Classes are structured but still have a relaxed, encouraging energy that makes it easy to stay consistent. Overall, this is the kind of place that makes you want to keep showing up. Whether your goal is fitness, self-defense, or just trying something new, I highly recommend checking it out.

Coach Curry and Kim are absolutely amazing, genuine people. From day one, it's been incredibly clear just how deeply they care about the practice of martial arts and, more importantly, about the people they coach. They don't just teach techniques; they focus beautifully on both the mental discipline and the physical skills required to truly pursue and appreciate martial arts. The biggest impact for our family has been with our 12-year-old. Traditional sports were never their thing, and they never really found a place where they felt they belonged or excelled. However, under Coach Curry and Kim's guidance, we have seen them thrive both physically and emotionally. The boost in their confidence, resilience, and physical strength has been nothing short of life-changing. We are so grateful to have found this studio and cannot recommend Coach Curry, Kim, and the entire Precision Martial Arts family enough!

My older, quieter son has developed strength and confidence, and my younger, energetic son has learned to manage his strong emotions; skills they didn't even realize they were developing through their training and amazing coaches! As a single mom, I really appreciate the support and teaching from each of the coaches, not only in jiujitsu, but also in strong positive values, compassion, mindfulness, and community. The coaches take the time to individualize their training to each student's personality and needs, and I have been awed at times by their patience. Students learn the importance of respect/kindness for others, regardless of differences; they learn to feel comfortable and confident with themselves and with peers. This inspired me to also start training 2 years ago, as I saw that the classes, coaches, and students are all so welcoming! And I have noticed positive changes both physically and mentally (much needed with 2 kids and work!).
