I had occassion to visit this pub as I had seen an advert in the Campaign for Real Ale monthly…read morenewsletter (the newsletter is called Whats Brewing). Back to the point, the advert was for the Evan Evans Brewery Christmas Beer Festival to celebrate 245 years of family brewing. Basically the brewery was showcasing 5 great beers (Evan Evans Original Stout, Evan Evans Winter Porter, WH Buckley Celebration Ale, Archers Strong Ale & Archers Santa's Glow) never tasted before. All available from 4 great venues, one of the venues was the White Horse Inn, Rhosmaen Street, which is located down the road from the actual brewery itself. The pub itself is tied to Evan Evans and already has regular Evan Evans beers like Cwrw & Best Bitter. So in a festive spirit I decided to check out this Xmas festival and hopped on the Heart of Wales trainline from Llanelli to Llandeilo. The pub itself is on the main high street of Llandeilo & is just set back slightly away from the narrow busy road. Have to go through an archway/arcade leading onto a small courtyard, there is also a small beer garden to one side too. The pub itself is small, traditional and both the staff and the clientele are friendly and inviting. The pub is clean, warm and has a cosy atmosphere. Quite a large lounge-restaurant area and a small bar & snug with an open fire. The bar meals are quite reasonable at £4 each which a dozen options to choose from i.e. pie, fish, vegetarian etc. Generous portions from what I could see although I did not partake myself of the food. Tried two of the seasonal ales whilst there the Celebration Ale which was light, clean and very smooth with a woody-citrusy taste. Also I tried the more potent Strong Ale which was darker in colour, a deep red in fact really stong bitter with a lot of depth. Enjoyed the Strong Ale so much, spent the afternoon drinking that in this wonderfully atmospheric pub. In summary, I enjoyed visiting this pub for the Christmas Beer Festival. Look forward to returning for a good pint Festival or not, as enjoyed the ambience & the people.

The Ferry Inn is a very popular gastropub in an enviable position on the River Teifi. (The views…read moreare fantastic.) It has a cosy bar area, three inside eating areas with river views, two outside eating areas and a terrace to really enjoy the view. They are happy to accommodate diners with dogs (there are also dog-free areas) and it's very child-friendly (there's a children's menu, and some tables seat eight). The menu offers starters at £7.50-£7.95, mains around £18 (except fish and seafood at £24 and steak at £29), desserts at £7.50, as well as a choice of ice creams and sorbets (£3.50-£7.50). They offer a range of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. We chose Sea Bass served with Lemon Parsley Caper Butter, Herb Roasted New Potatoes, Garden Salad with Buckwheat & Broad Beans with Honey Mustard Sauce & New Leaf Microgreens (£24); and the one of the vegetarian options: Glamorgan Crumble a tower of Leeks, Carrot, Breadcrumbs & Mature Cheddar Cheese, Garlic & Herb Roasted New Potatoes, Glebelands Salad, Quinoa, Bean, Vegetable Salad & Fresh Herb White Sauce (£19.95). We followed this with Dark Cherry & Marzipan Bake Vanilla Ice Cream £7.50. Overall, the food was very good, except that the seabass was (disappointingly) over done and therefore falling apart. I always think it's a little odd serving a cold side salad on the side (or in my case underneath) a hot dish, although overall the flavours did work well together. The Glamorgan Crumble was very tasty. Service was a little manic: some staff seemed to run around all evening, and we were served by four different people during the evening. (One was very nice, two were a bit brusque.) They were busy, but we had booked (and were expecting) a table in the downstairs area with a river view, but were shown to a different part of the restaurant area. There were, however, a number of reserved tables which remained empty through the evening, so it seems like they had a few no-shows. Overall we had a nice evening: with two glasses of wine, the bill came to £75 for two, excluding service. It's firmly worth four stars, and of course you're paying for the location, but at these prices, getting the fish right and calmer service would land a five.

It is 5 minutes walk away from the centre of Llandeilo and is quite close to the entrance of Dinefwr Park. I visited there recently with a group of friends on a day trip to Llandeilo on the Heart Of Wales train line, being more familiar with the pubs in the centre of Llandeilo i.e. the White Horse, The Angel Bistro & the Cawdor Hotel, decided to give the back street boozers a go. So a few minutes stroll away from the train station is the Sal Bar plus Yr Hen Vic pub (see other review). From the outside the building looks a little rough and gives the illusion of a proper drinking man pub especially with the old former name of Salutation Inn. But this place gives credence to the adage never judge a book by its cover. The interior has a chique rustic charm with stone clad walls, a log fire & oak beams. Plus a courtyard and garden that has to be seen to be believed. The beer garden is terraced, stepped & furnished with picnic benches/tables and has a stone clad patio you can ascend by wrought iron stair case or steps. There is also a conservatory for dining with wicker furniture. The gallery photos on the website gives credence to all of the above descriptions & will give visual testament to the feel and atmosphere of the place. My friends and I did not dine there but the establishment does serve food and real ale. Had a decent pint of real ale and can assume the beer is well kept (take it from a CAMRA member). My friends and I had an enjoyable time supping ale in the middle of the summer heat wave which heightened the pleasure and charm of this place to us and I can only recommend it as well worth a look to visit.
