This branch is really nice, within 5 minutes walk of the town centre, with plenty of different types of places to sit (alcoves, wooden chairs with tables - some 'ordinary' size, some high ones with bar stools/chairs); pleasant lighting and clean, well looked after carpeted surroundings. The prices are hard to beat, especially on one of their 'special' days like the Thursday curry club when you can have a good meal for two people including a glass of wine AND a pint of beer for under £10!! Yesterday I was served by Daniel who was really friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and arrived quite quickly. Definitely another great Wetherspoon to add to my growing list!

The drinks were good, and there is a jukebox and large TV used to show major sporting events but generally it wasn't too noisy and you could hold a conversation without difficulty. This is in face a very small gastro pub which I visited for the first time last week. Never set foot in there before and was pleasantly suprised. Called in on a lunchtime for a bite to eat. Most pub meals in the Carmarthen area are on average around the £8 mark unless you go in for 2 meals for £10. The particular pub boasts meals around £6 or 2 meals for £8 which makes it a lot cheaper then the competition. I sampled the steak and ale pie (£6.50) and had a large cappucino (£1.60). Very generous portions and very high standard of cuisine. Quick service too. Quite a large selection of dishes on the menu plus they have a specials board, Sunday carveries and do vegetarian meals (cheese & broccoli bake, veg kievs etc.) The restaurant and bar area is small, but well kept & clean. The pub as a whole is a very small premise too. Not a bad place to call in for a quick bite even though slightly off the beaten track.

Let me tell you a little about the location of this pub hotel. Situated in the provincial Welsh town of Carmarthen, a place seemingly stuck in a pre-millennium timewarp filled with some pleasant locals but primarily a demographic of OAPs, lager louts and bored looking teenagers, in which the only source of entertainment is to marinate oneself in as much alcohol as your enzymes can handle. The location aside the Rose and Crown is fairly innocuous in terms of looks, although I did sense a ripple of tension from the locals as we walked into the pub (The League of Gentlemen kept popping into my head for some inexplicable reason!) I had come down to Carmarthen to surprise my fiancé as he was working down there for a few days, and staying at the hotel. Despite his already having paid for the room I still had to pay £20 for the privilege of sleeping in the other unoccupied single bed in my partner's room. Apparently the manageress was doing us a favour by allowing this, and told us that they'd had problems with guests bringing...ahem...."visitors" back to stay before. Despite feeling slightly disgruntled by being categorised with certain ladies of the night I paid up as quite frankly I couldn't be bothered driving the hour and a half home. There were 8 rooms in all, each fairly basic in design but clean and serviceable. The bathrooms were a happy surprise - each with a large, new shower cubicle, which were very well maintained. The beds were, like most cheap hotels, not exactly the height of comfort but quite frankly we were so exhausted we would've slept on anything. Unfortunately however sleep alluded me all night, with a cacophony of noise spewing from the pub and the locals trundling up and down the street until 5.30am. I was so tired by the time my alarm went off I decided to skip breakfast to catch a few extra precious minutes sleep. If you're a night owl yourself The Rose and Crown would probably suit you down to the ground, but as a resting place for tired business persons, or as a romantic getaway (though I can't imagine anyone choosing Carmarthen for a romantic weekend away) I would recommend you stay elsewhere!

Regardless of how many courses we actually wanted, everyone had to have three courses. The facilities were poor and dirty. This is what comes from eating in an actual pub environment. This is not your usual pub come restaurant environment. Its closer to what a pub looks like at 11pm on a Saturday night. This venue is great if your out for a couple of drinks of an evening because you'll care less about how dirty it is and the condition of the toilets but I would strongly recommend against eating here.
