I went the other day for a class and honestly I went not knowing what I got myself into. They kept a good pace and while the class was difficult I was able to keep up for the entire time. It does get pretty warm in the room, but there are also cooler spots you can position yourself at if needed. I recommend bringing extra towels because you will get warm. They provide most equipment but make sure to bring a mat with you and plenty of water! read more

Ahhhh! I've got so many good things to say about YoYoYogi. I've clocked in 150 classes to date and felt that it was finally time to give my favorite yoga studio the praise that it deserves. ~ THE BEST YOGA STUDIO IN PORTLAND ~ I have been a member at YoYoYogi for almost 2 years and have taken all sorts of classes and workshops from different teachers. To give you some background, I have been practicing yoga for over 15 years, moved from city to city, attended dozens of yoga studios, and have completed my 200-hour yoga teacher training (got certified elsewhere, though I wish I completed it at YoYoYogi). When I moved to Portland, I was searching for my forever studio and am so grateful to have stumbled into YoYoYogi. So, it's safe to say that when I tell you that YoYoYogi is truly the best, you best believe it!!! ~ A VARIETY OF CLASSES ~ What I love the most about YoYoYogi is that no matter your experience and preference, YoYoYogi has a class for you. Want a more blissful-like, meditative practice? Take the Yin Yoga, Sanctuary, or Candlelight HOT class. Want a high-energy class to challenge yourself? Any of the hot yoga classes and Power Vinyasa classes will do just that. A beginner to yoga? Or want to take your yoga practice to the next level? Check out their workshops! There is a variety of classes currently on the schedule and no class is ever the same. I've been rating and reviewing places lately based on my gut feelings and emotional responses rather than just the facts, and while I feel a little guilty not rating YoYoYogi higher, something within me just can't justify more stars. Overall, and seemingly for most practitioners here, the studio is a four-star joint, but subjectively I've had more of a three-star experience. But! That's not to say that there's anything 'wrong' with the studio. It's objectively pretty great. The space is centrally located in the Pearl, and just gorgeous; the studio is spacious, with big windows and brick walls, and very atmospheric. I always feel cozy when practicing here. The facilities are nice, there are cubbies and lockers for your valuables and water and a shower and changing 'rooms' and all that good stuff. It's good. Honest. However, some things about the studio just didn't click with me. Although YoYo has a varied schedule with lots of options and many great teachers, a lot of their practices aren't as... spiritual? As I personally prefer. While the instructors generally do a good job of acknowledging the spiritual and mental side of yoga practice alongside the physical, I found some classes detracting and distracting. Several teachers like to play music, loudly, during class, and oftentimes it's not 'yoga' music but hip hop or something similar. I have nothing against hip hop, but it doesn't belong in my personal yoga practice. I find it rather distracting and the class feels more like 'gym yoga' or a workout class than a true immersive yoga experience. Many of the instructors also don't do hands-on adjustments or even bother to correct students' form. This isn't as much of an issue for me since I've been practicing for a while (although I definitely still benefit from hands-on correction at times!) but can be detracting for newer students who are still trying to master the poses. At times the studio can feel somewhat clique-y or clubby. Some folks made me feel very welcomed, and some made me feel like a random who just walked off the street (which, okay, I am, but I'm tryna practice yoga here). They also charge $2 to use their mats, which I haven't seen another studio here in Portland do, but only monthly members can store their mats at the studio, so everyone else is stuck toting their mats around or paying the 'rental fee' every time. I wanted to love YoYo. I really did. And while I would definitely be back to practice here (if I can afford and justify their $16 drop-in) unfortunately it doesn't rank at the top for me. Ultimately I think it comes down to a difference in preferences and priorities, so who knows - this may be the perfect studio for you! read more

Attended my first YoYoYogi class this past Sunday on a whim and definitely enjoyed some of the aspects of the studio. For starters the lobby and changing area is extremely spacious and they offer a huge variety of goods for purchase. The staff was kind and accommodating and made me feel super welcomed! In terms of the class itself, I really would recommend putting mat markers down as I ended up getting squeezed into a corner to accommodate a late member while the row behind me had much more space. The instructor had a ton of energy and I really appreciated the positive vibes. The sequence felt a little discombobulated and transitions were basically non-existent. I also do not recall hearing any posture or alignment suggestions and witnessed a few members in dangerously-wrong versions of poses. Through completing a month's worth of classes, 3-4x's per week--this studio is great place to learn or advance whatever stage of yoga you are in! Beginners, intermediates or advanced yoga students will benefit through a variety of classes taught throughout the day by many different super-qualified-friendly instructions. Big studio with wood floors, low lights and soft music with room set to a hospitable temperature gets me in the right meditative mood to conduit my practice. The instructors are passionate and take time to show you the right way to move through the various pose's. Best news, I was having some stiffness in my creaky, stiff and sore back before I started to try yoga for the first time a few months ago. What a difference yoga has made for me. Wow. Best yoga studio I have been to on the West Coast. Yup, seriously. I'm typically a Bikram fan, but my cousin wanted me to meet her for a class here and the $28 newbie special for unlimited classes for a month had me at Namaste (yes, that was a bad yogi joke). What you will want to know; YoYo Yogi is a beautiful and clean studio. They have wooden floors and it has been tastefully decorated with little lanterns in the studio spaces themselves lending a sense of peace and tranquility. So far, I have taken their Yin and their Yogaahh class, both of which left me feeling refreshed and calm. The Yin class used bolsters, blocks and blankets and all were super clean, high quality and in great shape. The owners of the studio are some of the nicest people I have ever met and are so excited about yoga and you that it just makes you want to try out every one of their unusual yoga class selections. I will absolutely be making it to Acro-Yoga next week but in the meantime will be making a point to visit their Yin class after my evening Bikram session for a truly restorative experience (yes, I am a masochist!). HIGHLY recommend YoYo Yogi Yoga Studio. The only thing that could improve this space would be showers but I know that's a lot to ask for in an urban studio! read more

I am no yoga expert.. In fact my recent trip to YoYoYogi was my first time ever trying out this limb stretching activity. In all honesty I was a bit nervous and unsure about what to expect as a first timer but Terri and Alex (the owners) made it a really nice experience. Fill out a little bit of paper work, drop a couple dollars for the class, they even have rental mats for people who don't own one (like me) and you are ready to go. The class itself, Yoga Virgins, as implied is geared towards people new to yoga. The class moves fast and a number of times I found myself in a position completely different than everyone else but there is zero pressure and all in all it was a blast. Why do I love YoYo Yogi? Let me count the ways. 1. Sensational variety of classes with a twist on the traditional for each. From power vinyasa to hot yoga to yin to tai-chi inspired, they've got pretty much every genre covered. 2. Incredible instructors. I've probably taken classes with 90% of them and they are all fantastic in their own unique way. 3. Gorgeous space. "Up dog" reminds me of the studio I used to practice at in NYC (Yoga to the People on St. Marks Place). Old brick, restored hardwood floors, no mirrors. "Down dog" is smaller with mirrors and new hardwood. Both very welcoming places to do your dog. 4. The owners. Alex and Terri are not only always smiling, but they seem to have a knack for remembering names. 5. "Bad Ass" yoga. This class gets its own bullet point because it's simply the best yoga class I've ever been to. Alternative title possibility: "Kick Ass" yoga because my ass is beat every time in the best way possible. Simply put: I am addicted to this studio. 5 stars, indeed. read more

I'm an advanced beginner student. I tried other studios in town, and I'd have the same problem every place. I'd go for a "beginner", "level 1/2", or "all levels" class. I'd choose a class that had a theme or style agreeable to me. When I showed up? It turned out that the actual skill level was "all advanced students, plus me". And the class seemed to have no resemblance to its published description. It was more like, "the routine this teacher always does, known by rote by all other students, who have all practiced under her for years". The teachers rarely ignored me, and they were all inspirational people in their own ways. But if they didn't give me constant attention, I was inevitably left in the dust, because the other students all knew the routine so well, and the teacher was in sync with *them*. I've been pleased to find it's not like that at YoYoYogi. I choose my classes there on the same criteria I did at the other studios. Here, there are always a few advanced students at class, and sometimes there are first-timers too. Whatever the mix, they always teach these classes to accommodate the variety of abilities. They emphasize reaching *your* limit, not pushing it to an extreme, and not worrying what you look like. They don't make you feel self-conscious and left out, and yet the classes are as rigorous as you make them. So, five thumbs up. read more

Seven months ago I was tired, sad, and looking for a sunny patch in a dark winter; Yoyoyogi was that light! I am addicted to this place. From the moment I walked in I have felt like a member of their family. This studio offers a little bit of everything! Never done yoga before? Terri teaches "Yoga Virgins". Wanna get your chant on? Alex's "Soul Shakin' Yoga" is almost spiritual. Need some positive energy? "Inspired Flow" with Brooke will put a smile on your face. Prefer it hot? Tania's "Sweat" is Bikram with a little something special. I am serious when I say there is everything, and I could go on, but I'll spare you. But I haven't mentioned the best part! They love yoga so much they've gone and made it affordable. I work at a non-profit which gives me an edge since they offer discounts for the "Heroes" who work at non-profits or are social workers. But their first month special at $38 is a steal and a great way to test the classes out. Still not convinced, several times a week they offer "Community Classes" for $8 a pop. I got into a bit of a yoga funk after leaving my favorite studio in Arizona and moving to NYC. One of my goals moving to Portland was to get back to yoga. I tried two other studios before coming to YoYoYogi and didn't mind them, but didn't feel at home. The day I came to YoYoYogi, my friend and I couldn't have felt more welcome and part of the family. The owners were warm and genuinely glad to have us there (plus they have a cute dog!). The teachers are inspiring... and the people are friendly. My favorite classes are Alex and Leahs. Found YoYo Yogi via Groupon. Over the years I've done yoga at several different studios in several different states. I thought the studio was easy to find. I walk there so parking isn't an issue. :) For those of you that want to bike to the studio, they have indoor bike parking! Love it! The studio is in an old building w/ a great look & feel to it, very warm & yummy. There are cubbies for personal items/shoes/etc. There are changing rooms & showers. The studio is spotless & well maintained. BYOM (Bring Your Own Mat) but if you forget there are rentals available. If you don't feel like dragging your mat to & from class there is storage space. All other equipment/props are provided by the studio free of charge, they are all clean & in good shape. The owners are fabulous. I fell in love w/ them instantly. I wanna hug them and pet them and squeeze them and call them George. ;) The instructors, also, fabulous! At the start of class they ask if any students have any injuries or trouble spots and they make modifications for those students when necessary. They don't teach from their mat, they get up, they walk thru the students & makes adjustments as necessary. There's something for everyone here. The class descriptions are fun but aren't particularly helpful in determining what's what. Better to just go in, grab a schedule & have a chat w/ somebody that works there: "This is what I can do, this is what I like to do, this is what I won't do.... which classes are for me?" I've been practicing yoga on and off for the last four or five years. Many different studios, various gyms, and a host of different instructors and styles. I've never been much of a student of the more traditional meditative forms, but I believe I've tried many of the major varieties available out there. Each teacher has their own style at any studio, their own focus, their own preferred postures. This studio seems to have decided to do something truly unique. Rather than having the objective of training people in extremely traditional practices, their goal seems to be to try and make a composite of the best of what they've experienced in Yoga here and share it. Some of the instructors they have hired are definitely specialists; Acro Yoga, Samurai Yoga, Happy Yoga, etc... Playful, colorful names for practices that are (probably) a pleasure to share and each unique in their own way. I only say probably because I haven't tried them all yet. More standard Power Vinyasa style classes are taught, yes, but there's a variety to the practices available here which is truly a treasure, taught by some really friendly and cool people. I came across YoYoYogi while exploring my new neighborhood in NW Portland, and did some research online, including reading Yelp reviews, before signing up. I'm really glad I did, and I recommend YoYoYogi to everyone, from beginners to seasoned yogis looking for new ideas or something to break a routine. The new student special of 12 classes in 30 days for $38 is a screamingly good deal, and since the 30 days start on the day of your first class, rather than the day you purchase the special, it's a good way to try a range of classes and instructors and see what suits you best. The space is well thought out, with a large upstairs studio with dressing rooms and a smaller downstairs studio. Mats and other accessories can be purchased up front, and everyone on site is knowledgeable if you have questions about what's on offer. It had been years since I last practiced yoga regularly, and I started with their Yoga Virgins class, a simple flow class meant to re-initiate folks like me, or to introduce new students to the practice, positions, and breathing of yoga. Thanks to Terri's instruction and friendliness, I quickly remembered why I loved yoga when I practiced in college. YoYoYogi offers a variety of classes, from yin classes (my favorite, thanks Lisa!) that focus on the skeleton and connective tissue, to hot yoga, and intense and effective flow classes that are a great core workout. Each instructor has their own pace and style, and all have been attentive in class to questions and requests for instruction. YoYoYogi has quickly become almost a home away from home for me. Everyone there is welcoming and friendly, and I've always been treated with respect and friendly guidance in classes. I've been away from Yoyo Yogi for 2 months and I'm really missing it. We moved to Philadelphia and I can't find a studio in the city near it's equal. I practiced at Yoyo for 10 months and Yoyo is hands down the very best studio that I have ever been to. I love everything about this business. I love that they offered me a Groupon and didn't treat me like I was exploiting them. I love that they know my name, and send me email if they don't see me for a week. I love that they are constantly trying new things and new classes, times, etc.... (although that does make remembering the schedule a little tricky). I love Alex and Teri, and their daughter (Kristy) who teaches there, too. I love that classes are cheap, that they have flexible plans, and that they'll put your plan on hold if you're out of town for a week. I love their spaces (new space just opened up!) and their location (what a cool old building in the pearl -- and the coffee roaster that apparently is in the building makes it smell freaking heavenly). The yoga isn't hippy-dippy. I have a low tolerance for Ohm-ing. Some teachers are more "breathe-y spiritual meditation" than others (and obviously, some class types are more like that than others) but most of them give you a good, "relax while you sweat your ass off because you are working so hard you don't have time to think about your problems" kind of yoga experience. That's my kind of yoga. Oh, they care about your breathing.... they are working you so hard that it's just practical that they remind you to breathe, lest you pass out! I wasn't looking to upgrade from free-yoga-at-the-gym to pay-subscription-yoga. Alex and Teri's place has convinced me that it is worth it 100 times over... I've been here for about 6 months now. $50 a month gets me five classes, and forces me to actually go to those classes (money = accountability!!). It's worth your nickel, too. Start with the groupon (or, I think they have an introductory-month package normally, and I'm pretty sure that your first class is free regardless), and stay forever. You won't regret it. read more

We were greeted by Mike, who was super friendly for that hour of the day and his dog Rudy who was super sleepy that morning. He talked to us a lot about DC while we waited for class, and then showed us around the studio (2 huge studios on 2 levels). Our class was in the upstairs studio. Beautiful space, 2 changing rooms (a rarity in DC) and rather warm (the way I like it). Terri was our teacher - very nice, good instructor. She was thrilled we were there from DC and introduced herself to us. A really challenging class - It was an all levels class, and was a bit hard for my non-yoga practicing husband, but he held his own and Terri didn't push poses on people if they couldn't do them/hold them (one of my pet peeves of some instructors). Lots of ab work, which I'm not used to in a yoga class. Mike and Terri both thanked us a few times before we left for coming - they were just super nice and attentive. If I lived in Portland (which after the week I had there I wish that I did), I would go here regularly. read more

I just had my first visit to YoYo Yogi after years of meaning to stop by. Thought I'd take advantage of the sweet new student deal. I love the space (old buildings with original wood floors and built-ins are my favorite) but with that you get creaky stairs and loud stomping above. The class was comfortably full and only a bit warm with ceiling fans gently moving the air around. Unfortunately, one man nearly ruined my experience as he lumbered in with his cell phone (the door specifically states "Cell Free Zone") and then loudly gabbed with his friend until class started. At the end of class he also apparently desperately needed to speak to said friend the second the teacher left us to enjoy our final moments of shavasana. I wanted to tell him to STFU but figured that would be the opposite of the point of my having attended the class. Everyone else I met was friendly, from the gal at the front desk to the teacher to two students who introduced themselves to me as we all got our things together. I'm not accustomed to loud music with vocals when I do yoga, but it certainly helped to drown out some of the old building noise. I look forward to seeing what the other classes are like. read more

This is by far the best yoga studio I have ever found, and I am so lucky to live just a short walk from here! Alex and Terri are two of the sweetest people you will ever meet. They are so genuinely excited about sharing yoga with their community and their rates definitely reflect that. So many studios are out of reach to so many people because of the high costs of drop-ins and class packs, but here the most expensive thing on the menu is $98, and that's for one month of completely unlimited yoga. I've taken almost every class they offer and I have yet to find one I didn't love. If you've never tried yoga and are curious, or you're new to the area and looking for a place to call your "yoga home" this is the place for you. Alex and Terri and all of the teachers are so warm and welcoming, even the other students I've met are friendly and sweet. Not the case at some other studios I've been to!
