Unfortunately I have to say that the Palace Westgarth does not always show movies to warrant people from all over Melbourne knowing it's presence. Don't get me wrong the Palace Westgarth does show many great movies and has a number of great film festivals throughout the year - including the Spanish and French ones of most note. It has the Friday night film vault where they show old school movies usually of the horror or other cult genres at the stoke of midnight. However, most of the time I personally feel that they don't show a great selection of films. They don't show many blockbusters, which is fine, but they also don't show that many independent films either. In fact it seems to me that a large component of their catalogue includes kids movies, second rate British romantic comedies and cheap Hollywood films. All this means is that I find I never end up going all that often to a cinema which I desperately want to support.

Thankfully the lasers don't really make that sound during your movie watching sessions. I'm a massive fan of cinemas and movies, from a technical side, IMAX does some incredible things. If you are into Scientific documentaries about the Amazon, space, oceans or stories about cute animals - IMAX has you covered with their exclusive lineup of movies made just for them. They also have a massive range of Hollywood blockbuster films in converted IMAX 3D which can be interesting. The films shot for IMAX show of the capabilities of this hardware more (specially made custom screens built for the room are just one of them!). The seats are large and comfy and as it's designated seating you can book online and find a nice central seat. I wouldn't recommend sitting too far forward as you will be craning your neck up the whole movie. The sound is brilliant too. IMAX is a great experience, even if their lasers don't make that sci-fi sound.

However, this is one of the Palace Cinemas which means that it tends to be one of the old suburban cinemas that has been bought up and tends to show movies that are a little classier, and more intelectually challenging, that your typical movieplex. The movie I ended up seeing here happened to be the Royal Shakespeare Company's Cymbeline, and having discovered a cinema that is closer to where I live showing such movies I have to admit that I am pretty impressed. The cinema still has its old charms, and you can also take beers into the cinema as well (as long as they come from the candy bar that is).

My friends would disown me if they read this, but most of the independent cinemas in Melbourne are a bit shit. It's not their fault, really, it's just the economics. They want to show independent cinema, which doesn't draw crowds. Means they can't compete with the chains on comfort or space, which means they can't pull in large crowds for the more commercial films they show. Why none of this applies to the Westgarth, I don't know. But it's an independent cinema (well, more or less) that combines the stylistic aspirations of the old cinema culture with the comfort and convenience of the new chains. And they still show a whole load of independent film. Final note: on Friday nights, they do a midnight screening of a cult movie every week.

Gorgeous old theatre that I feel is sadly under-used and a little neglected…read more I had the pleasure of working here a few times during the recent Melbourne International Film Festival and the decor is simply stunning inside the theatre. It was so nice to see patrons actually stop at the top of the stairs and take a moment to take it all in. Capacity is about 600 people and for this reason I guess it isn't ideal as a cinema - too much movement and I found it quite light, even with all the lights off. I understand RMIT now use it for lectures and special events. I would suggest taking a jacket if you're attending anything here - 'a bit chilly' is being kind - unless you are right up the back - then it's boiling!

I find the seats to be more comfy than many other comedy festival venues where you are often sitting on wooden or vinyl bench or flip type seating. The architecture is definitely a feature having been built in the 20's in a "chicagoesque" style. The foyer is adorned with posters advertising current and upcoming shows. Disappointingly there is no snack or drink bar.
