They are consistent and professional while also being a lot of fun. My son's self confidence increased as he mastered the skills required to obtain each belt. They also emphasize being a good person with strong values. It was all around a very welcoming and positive experience for all of us!

The schools are fortunate to have hands-on involvement from 9th degree Grandmaster Kong in the curriculum and at testing. Students are taught respect and self-control as well as physical activity. I've been attending for five years total, and my kids for two. There are many families at the school, and it's a great activity to do together. In response to the other reviewer - this is my perspective as a student and parent: There are tests every 2 months for color belts and 6 months for black belts. There are intermediate steps between belts (stripes or patches) so students don't advance a full belt level each time. The frequency of testing helps to keep younger students motivated with a consistent progression. It's true that students do not often fail testing, but that is because they are not even allowed to attend a test until they have proven themselves ready for the next level. That said, belts must be earned and students can fail if they do not prepare. The testing fees and schedule are comparable to other martial arts schools, in my experience. Twice a year, Young Brothers holds an inter-school tournament to benefit charity. Its students have consistently performed well at both the regional US Open in West Virginia and the national US Open in Las Vegas. This school is a solid, traditional Tae Kwon Do experience.

The staff customize your program to fit your body's needs as well as your capabilities. I've studied martial arts for most of my life, and this is the best school I have encountered. We're lucky to have it in Pittsburgh.

Kung fu, udo, Kong su (similar to karate or tae kwon doe), samurai sword, 18 chinese weapons, aikido, tai chi and bagua. This gives students really balanced development and ultimately allows you to create a personal practice that is beautifully tailored to your individual needs. At Oom Yung Doe movement is a tool to win over whatever challenges you have in life, whether you want to overcome depression or serious health challenges. It is serious, authentic, traditional martial arts and the benefits are undeniable. I train primarily at an Oom Yung Doe location in Massachusetts but took some classes at this school while I was in the area. Instructors are excellent and knowledgeable, the students are fun and laid back and feel like a family, and the practice space is great. Head Instructor Patrick taught most of my classes in Boston when I started my training-- he was incredibly knowledgeable about how to work with my chronic illness and over a few months of working with him I was almost symptom free. The Pittsburgh school is extremely lucky to have him. In my two years at Oom Yung Doe I went from fainting 20 times a day and not being able to work for 9 years to being in better shape than I was as a high school athlete-- and that is just scratching the surface of the positive change I've felt. I've watched my fellow students get their weight under control, quit smoking, overcome depression, stop feeling suicidal, get past the need for various medications, heal long standing injuries, overcome social anxiety, the list goes on and on. The students are diverse in age (20's-60's), gender, race, religion, and background-- the unifying factor is that Oom Yung Doe is a place for people who are serious about making positive change in their lives. If you want to take control of your life and really change, grow, and overcome your mental and physical limitations, this is absolutely the place for you.
