Shorin Ryu emphasizes in-close fighting methods and natural movements for self defense. Various upper body techniques, kicks, clinching, grappling, and throws are all apart of the practice. In addition to the more modern methods of self defense, we also practice traditional training methods using futari geiko (two-person drills), kihon (basics), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring). Our dojo is affiliated with Shorin Ryu Karate Do International (SRKDI) and our instructor has trained extensively under the founder, Sensei Jerry Figgiani (8th Dan). In addition to receiving his 1st and 2nd Dans under Figgiani Sensei, our instructor has also received training under Tamaki Takeshi Sensei and Tokashiki Masahiko Sensei during a trip to Okinawa.

My kids loved it as well; in fact, they wanted to switch from their current gym due to the challenging intensity, personality of the instructors and warmth of the current members. I have trained at many other gyms in kung fu, kickboxing, jujitsu, and at the NYAC judo club.
