Lots of fun for all ages. People join karate for different reasons of course. Most join to focus on self-defence. Some, especially youth members, love the optional sport tournament aspect of karate. Others join for having a fun extracurricular activity that keeps them active. Regardless what you're there for though, the club follows the traditional karate teachings and curriculum of Sensei Shane Higashi, 9th dan, of the Canadian Chito-Ryu Karate-Do Association for all its students. Chito-Ryu is the style taught here. It was created by the Okinawan karate master Dr. Tsuyoshi Chitose. Chitose, a medical doctor, was a master of two old styles of karate from Okinawa. He noticed over the years that some movements and techniques wore out the body resulting in damaged knees and other joints, bad backs, etc. He blended the best aspects of the two styles he knew, applied his knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, and created Chito-Ryu. When practiced properly, Chito-Ryu strengthens the body over time and is a very effective form of self-defence. The best aspect of the AKC though? The camaraderie. You make new friends here and everyone is supporting one another in learning karate. In addition to the strong karate program taught, that camaraderie is probably one of the main reasons the club has been in existence for over 45 years!

The instructors are fantastic and do great work with the kids (age 4 and 6), and they do a great job teaching to the level and ability of everyone in the class. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to either start or re-start training in Karate.

The 6 on-ramp sessions were crucial for me as quickly realized that I had been doing basic movements wrong for 35 or so years so it was a high learning curve for me... The coaches are all very helpful and accommodating. They are quick to point out bad form and resourceful at helping me fixing what I am doing wrong. The facility is also awesome with lots of equipment. The place is always super clean (including the showers) and un-cluttered. The community is also great. Me, the anti-gym bunny, actually looks forward to fitness classes now. What is this world even coming to? The TRX Camps take only 45 minutes out of my day and pass without making me ever feel like I can't keep up or that I'm failing which is key in keeping me motivated...I'm not the kind of guy who likes to get screamed at by overenthusiastic trainers while trying to get my fitness on. I like the kind of people who can look me in the eye, understand that what they're telling me to do isn't as fun as eating cookies, but convince me that I'll thank them later. And that's pretty much what happens. Even though I don't feel completely wrecked during the workout, by the time I make it out to my car afterward every muscle in my body is shaking. Helps me feel like my super focused workout is getting me more bang for my buck than trying to figure out my own free-weight program and routinely giving up halfway through. The classes are typically led by Laurissa, the owner, with about four or five other people which makes for a friendly, welcoming, and personalized experience. I can tell Laurissa where my weak points are and she can customize the workout to make sure I still get the benefits without putting my body at risk. I've completely drank the Kool-aid!
