They were allowing only one customer at a time in this small shop, so when it came to my turn I was able to be served rather quickly. For to-go items, they only had a few "hot" food available--leberkäse, bratwursts, etc. Compared to what I'm used to, the slice of leberkäse was rather thin...only about 1/4 in. rather than usual 1/2 to 3/4 in. Brats were rather cold--a telltale sign of them sitting there for a while. On the contrary, brotchen/buns on which meats were on were pretty good--crunchy outside and soft inside--just the way I like them. At a glance it looked they offered a very wide variety of sausages available in this shop, but we didn't try or buy anything...this time.

This wonderful lady greeted me (I wish I would have gotten her name) and explained they were out of pizza dough! I came in for the pizza and explained that this is the only pizzeria that I can find in Germany or France (in Marseille - supposedly a pizza mecca) that had Salsiccia (sausage / wurst) on their pizza. In the U.S. sausage is a standard offering, but apparently not in Europe. Anyway, she was very nice and showed me the Salsiccia they had left. I asked them if it is was possible for them to just make me a Salsiccia sandwich, and she very politely said, yes! I said I'm simple, just bread and sausage is all I need. I grabbed a Hefeweizen and anxiously waited. What they brought out was something spectacular (see pic). A nice crusty bread, salsiccia, marinated and sautéed cherry tomatoes, fresh Basil with slices of Buffalo Mozzarella (Buffelmozzarella) on the side. The Salsiccia was fantastic, a little mild (compared to the U.S.) but with extraordinary flavor. The tomatoes added something I was not expecting and the fresh buffelmozzarella was delicious. Oh, and that light, crusty bread, just like I like it. What a wonderful sandwich, not even on the menu, but maybe it will be! When I was finished, I thanked every one of them that I could see, especially the lady who greeted me and the man who made that very special sandwich. As great as that sandwich was, the best part of the night, for which I truly thanked them for, was for them treating me like family! They didn't have to do what they did, they could have said, sorry, see you later. But they went out of their way to make me feel welcomed and appreciated. Walking in, I would designate this place more as a lounge/cocktail bar than a pure cafe, but it has definite characteristics of all of those things. Deep red and wood tones, a black piano and other curiosities decorating the cafe, I like the look. Ciro also has various places to relax in that they have a corner "comfy area" or the bar or the tables in the back corner. All in all, a very chill place to enjoy a drink or something light to eat. The staff and owner were very pleasant and engaged in conversation while making sure I was taken care of, a great plus in this type of atmosphere. Ciro has quite an extensive menu of mixed drinks, cocktails, liquors, beers, etc. to choose from, so many choices! It has a small book of drinks and libation selections, and there is something for everyone to enjoy at Ciro. I settled on a whiskey sour (very good) and then had a beer with my sandwich I ordered. The sandwich was HUGE and very satisfying, thumbs up. I relaxed after my meal and enjoyed the cafe atmosphere while finishing my drink. I usually don't like cocktails with alcohol, so I was pleasantly surprised when I opened up the menu and there were two pages full of non-alcoholic but not less awesome sounding cocktails! They serve everything from the classics to more exotic drinks, cocktails, longdrinks, flips (egg in a drink? Seriously, this is so disgusting!!) and many more... I sampled both an Elderberry and a Mango version, both very nice, served in a tall glass with fresh mint and bits of fruit. The Elderberry was very light and refreshing with just a hint of sweetness, some pomegranat and the ever present mint. The Mango is noticibly sweeter, but not sticky sweet, with red currants and of course fresh mint in the glass. We were served an welcome offering of flatbread, herbs including mint of course, goat cheese and radishes. You roll up the goodies in the bread and it is a quite interesting taste. Nice and fresh. I had ordered #17, for the life of me I cannot remember the proper name of the dish, but it was a beef and chicken kebab. The meat was wonderfully tender and seasoned to perfection. Obviously marinated and grilled, but with what and how remains a mystery. It was savory but not spicy hot. Just great flavor and general consencus was that the chicken was even better than the beef. The dish was served with a ton of safron rice topped with butter and a side of grilled tomatoes. The rice was plentiful and nicely done. And the butter on top rounded out the flavor well... then again, you can never go wrong with butter. I did take a star off for the following reasons: My friends thought the meat portion was a bit small, however there is an option to order additional meat, or go the route of ordering a platter to share... lots of meat there. This is a hole in the wall establishment. Forget about atmosphere. While there are a few Persian accents in the decor, it is what it is, basically a strip mall type of setting German style. Parking is attrocious, so much so that I would highly recommend using public transportation. There is a stop just a minutes walk away. All in all I highly recommend this place to anybody looking to broaden their horizon.
