If The Corso in Manly was the Las Vegas Strip, Ben & Jerry's would be Excalibur and Moevenpick the MGM Grand. With the opening of Yogurtland, Manly finally has it's New York-New York.
I'm honestly surprised it took so long for froyo to make it's way to the Northern Beaches. It's a natural fit and far better placement than all of the frozen yogurt shops that opened in Sydney's CBD last year. It just took an American chain to realise it.
And despite being in a self-induced froyo-coma for the last 5 months, I was once again excited about the opening of another froyo store. I'd heard good things about Yogurtland in the States. Unfortunately, it's glitz over gluttony and Yogurtland really doesn't bring anything new to our shores.
Of the ten or so flavours I tried four and all were too runny. The two cheesecake varieties I tasted were nice and great imitations of a real slice, but in terms of consistency they bordered on slop. Either the machines are not operating cold enough or they are not monitored long enough by staff before being made available to use. The other two flavours, mango and red velvet, were nearly water by the time I added toppings (and it was not a hot day).
The toppings bar has a great selection of fruit, chocolates and lollies, and the price isn't too bad. Plus it's self-serve, an important part of any froyo shop in my opinion, but the frozen yogurt lets Yogurtland down and that's kind of missing the point.
Maybe we'll start seeing froyo shops drop off faster than they came. Yogurtland will be around a little longer. It's location 25 metres from the beach will pay the bills in summer alone so here's hoping they fix their yogurt. read more
