Clean facility and helpful staff. I hope the YMCA's go back to the old closing time of 10 p.m.

Ask the Community - YMCA of Monroe County

Dos the cardio room have a bodybag for boxing or another type of boxing bag?

Hi Martin! We do have a boxing bag at our Southeast Y, but it's only accessible through Personal Training or SYNGRY360 classes.

I really like this place! The staff and trainers are very welcoming and positive. It's affordable…read moreif you're on a moderate budget. It's available 24/7, including holidays. The restrooms are single occupancy for privacy. There are 2 single occupancy shower rooms available. The equipment is reasonably up to date and if it's not fully functional they fix it in a reasonable amount of time. Every member gets 2 free sessions with a personal trainer. I only took advantage of one because as it turns out I don't enjoy talking while I work out and am quite self motivated, but I appreciated the trainer's friendliness and constructive attitude towards making a workout plan. I do only have a few criticisms and that's why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. There are a couple of things that could be improved. I go early in the morning and I find that they're usually either almost out or completely out of little towels you can use to wipe sweat. The restrooms are not always very clean in the morning. At least a couple of times per week they're out of equipment wipes and paper towels in the early a.m. For a small, nominal fee, I'd be ecstatic if they were to provide bigger towels for those who use the showers and don't want to lug a big towel with them that they have to take to their office (or class for the students) and discretely hang-dry (or let fester in their bag all day). Since I commute to work via bus I don't have a lot of options but don't want to be a jerk and use 4 tiny towels to dry off, especially as they're often out anyway. Making sure there are enough supplies like equipment wipes and small towels to last until the morning, and maybe having someone pop in during the evening to quickly touch up the restrooms might be nice too. It being a college town I know they probably have a surge of people in the evenings who prefer to work out at night, which is why they are out of supplies in the morning. Those are my only gripes - everything else is on-point and I don't expect any place to be absolutely perfect.

Unfortunately, my experience with Anytime Fitness has left me disappointed with how management communicates with customers. It's truly a shame as this is a decent facility. I brought in my cancelation letter before my 7 day trial ended and was also still charged for it. For context, the membership costs $27.99 biweekly, and adding coaching once a week would cost an additional $160 per month, bringing the total to approximately $217 per month. I was offered a discount of just $17, bringing the total to around $200 per month, but only if I agreed to the coaching agreement. That hardly felt like a meaningful discount, especially when it was conditional on purchasing an additional service. I wanted to try Anytime because I moved and its 3 minutes from where I live. Just for reference, Planet Fitness Black Card membership(Which is had before this) is $24.99 a month(Less than half of the cost of Anytime Fitness) that includes the perks of red light therapy, hydro massage chairs, tanning, the new wellness Pods, you get to bring a guest every single visit. When trying to talk me out of leaving and return to Planet Fitness, I was falsely informed all of the things that are listed are extra cost... Anytime offers a Sauna for an additional cost (I believe $100+ a month) as well as personal training (at an additional cost) and classes (at an additional cost). To get the very few perks they have to offer, it could easily be $300 a month with Anytime Fitness. As a consumer, you do not need to spend $200 or more every month to reach your fitness goals. Getting fit involves more than what you do inside a gym. Nutrition, grocery shopping, and the choices you make outside the gym are equally important, and those expenses add up, too. Everyone should be able to choose an approach that fits their goals and budget without feeling pressured or judged for doing so. What bothered me even more was the response I received when I explained my situation. I was told, "We were under the impression that you were going to follow through with your original plan of working with a coach to reach your goal." The message continued, "We would hate to lose you because I could tell that you were so motivated, and ready to make a big change and individuals like you really succeed in our program." This response felt passive aggressive, discouraging, and condescending. The emphasis on needing to "follow through" with their original coaching plan, followed by the comment that you "were so motivated," came across as though choosing not to continue with their coaching program meant I was giving up on myself or was unlikely to reach my goals. I understand that the gym has the right to set its own pricing and that businesses want to retain customers. However, there is a difference between explaining a policy and making a customer feel as though they will fail because they choose a different approach. Declining an expensive coaching agreement does not mean someone lacks motivation, commitment, or the ability to follow through with their goals. A gym should encourage people to succeed, whether they use its coaching services or work toward their goals independently. Support should never feel conditional on purchasing additional services, nor should customers be made to feel that their success depends on how much money they are willing or able to spend each month. Additional coaching should be an option, not something customers are pressured into or made to feel they need in order to succeed. People join a gym to work toward their goals, not to feel as though they must continually purchase extra services to be taken seriously or encouraged. There is a difference between offering a service and pushing it so heavily that a customer feels judged for declining it. I no longer feel comfortable continuing my membership. Customer service matters. How a business treats people when they decide not to purchase an additional service says a lot about the experience they can expect as a customer.
