Virgin Active - The pool

Virgin Active

Pool or pulpit...that is the question!…read more Here at the Virgin Active in Repton Park, they placed a swimming pool right inside a church...how cool is that? When I first entered the pool I was really taken aback and quite mesmerized - it felt a little sacrilegious, but at the same time I very much enjoyed swimming in this beautiful environment. The gym area itself is also quite neat, as you sweat underneath a prettily-decorated vaulted ceiling. There's plenty of exercise equipment, although the weight-lifting area is a little small. This Virgin Active gym is in Repton Park, which was the site of the fomrer Claybury Hospital - a psychiatric hospital. Apparently there's still the ghosts of the past haunting these premises....

I joined this Virgin as it is my local club about a month ago. This Virgin club is nestled within…read morethe closed community (Repton Park), the best way to get here would be by car, although there is a bus stop just outside Repton Park it is still quite a walk when you are inside. This gym has a Costa Coffee inside next to the reception that also includes food (this can get slightly irritating when working out and smelling food) o_O The gym has quite a few treadmills, bikes, rowing machines, free weights, TRX etc, each machine has a tv screen with the ability to plug in your IPhone/IPod which allows you to listen to your music but also you can store your workout data to your phone too. The most amazing area in this gym is the swimming pool, it is absolutely stunning, the whole gym used to be a chapel for the mental institution, so the decor inside is beautiful. Within the pool area, you also have the sauna and steam room, along with some sun loungers and some juice to drink. The only gripe I have is that there is no air-conditioning (but I don't think there is anything they can do about that due to the building structure).

I am a regular at this gym and thought I'd offer a more recent feedback since the last reviews date…read morea bit. Overall great gym with a lot of equipment and space to train. Clean changing rooms (female ones) Equipment is regularly cleaned (I see the staff doing it, which is reassuring) Only thing is: avoid peak times if possible at all as the place will be crammed with people (hence leaving you with little space to workout, especially on the upper floor). Triceps ropes could do with some replacement. Some people do not always put back the equipment but we probably didn't receive the same education... :)

Open24/7, literally 50yds from tube/train, cheap, no contract. It looks great, it's always clean, never too busy, a lot of cardio options should one be interested in cardio and quite a lot of weights too. Staff seem to have found the right balance between being friendly and a bit too helpful. In other gyms staff insist on you paying them to train you till they exasperate you, whereas here it's just...they tell you they can help should you need them to and that's all. Apart from that they're quite nice, smile a lot and look good. So, yeah, absolutely no complaints about this lovely gym. Although there's quite a few gyms within a mile from my home, I'm really sure I'm gonna be using this gym for as long as I'm living in the area.

Blok - Be warned they work you hard! Post workout

I went for an early morning full body workout and damn was it hard, but also so fun! The trainer was fantastic, really took the time to show us the exercises and help if we were struggling and I liked how varied the class was compared to usually circuits, with a few different circuits to try out. I also liked how there was just 3 in the class, it made the class even more personal. I particularly liked the changing facilities, the showers were so easy to control temperature wise with a separate lever for hot and cold. They also had really nice prdoucts to use - body wash, shampoo and conditioner. I loved how there was lots of hair dryers too, I'm also guilty of leaving with wet hair after a shower, so this was ideal. Only thing I would say in criticism is the changing rooms are a little small, if you had more than 5 people there and it's not the best located place - with only Clapton station nearby. Aside from that though it's the perfect place to train!

The changing facilities are beautiful, clean and well maintained. Although after a busy class they are a little on the small side. I worked with a personal trainer, Rowan Byrne, who was funny, intelligent, very knowledgable, and professional. He set up a fantastic workout routine for me and, although it was tough, helped me feel healthier. Within a month, I was noticing changes in my body. Yoga with Zoe was one of my weekly treats to myself. She is a fantastic yoga instructor. She knows her poses well and is great at pacing a class so that you feel stretched, warmed up. focused, and completely present. Be warned though: the word is out and her classes get packed. Please get there early so as not to disturb the others. Finally, Sapan, the owner. What a great guy. He truly achieved his goal of creating a work out space where people can find and build community. The pricing is not only fair, it's downright cheap for the attention clients receive. He's alway smiling and around the studio. He's helpful if you have any questions about anything at all. I can't praise this place enough. If you're at all close or thinking of joining a gym, this is the place. Stop looking elsewhere. I am now living back in Los Angeles, and I miss LFFS daily.
