My review is about the overnight/resident camp. This camp is so far off of what is advertised on…read morethe website and apparently no amount of research (I thought I was thorough) can prepare you. There were only 2 cabins of children... one boys, one girls, all ages, attached, with one female counselor between the 2, so connecting doors were left open at night. After the day campers left, that one counselor was also the lifeguard, the activities director, the cook. There were ZERO campfires in the evenings. Instead they were put in front of a movie 3 of the 5 nights... with microwaved s'mores and frozen pizza one night. They did not get to pick their activities... horseback riding, archery, games, sports, outdoor cooking, fishing were not offered. They attended prescribed activities that were mostly the same every day. There was no teambuilding, no traditions, no fun clubs, nothing that we were expecting. Kids told to 'stop crying' if they were homesick. I even emailed prior with a couple questions that would have given the perfect opportunity to set the expectation and let the parent decide if this type of environment was right for our children. So disappointed in this camp, which I know USED to be good bc I went there as a kid. So disappointed in the YMCA for not doing better and for ruining my daughter's idea of overnight camp.

Our daughter Danika has been going to the overnight camps going on her 6th summer now. It being closed last year due to the pandemic was probably the worst transition our daughter went thru during these uncertain times. If you live in the Quad Cities the you heard the scream from Danika's mouth when she heard "Papa Smurfs "voice when I answered the phone. We drop our little girl off & her dad cries every time cuz this is his baby but we know she's safe & she comes home with so much knowledge & understanding. She feels so peaceful while at camp. She's not afraid to try new things. We've never been turned away when we've struggled to pay for camp. This is the best thing you can do for your children is send them to Camp Abe Lincoln. They don't have any electronics but you can email them & Nicks up bright and early printing them off before 5am so your camper gets them every morning at breakfast time. Please look into it. You will Not regret it. Thank you Nick & all the staff

The completed projects on display are pure eye candy for me. They also sell some gorgeous completed items for the non-artistic. But one day, I decided-- 'What the hell. I'm gonna go see what Beadology Iowa is all about.' And I'm glad I did. This store definitely deserves some Yelp love. First off, the storefront and sign are eye catching. And while Beadology Iowa changed names like a decade ago, this go-to bead store has lived in Iowa City for over 30 years. I walked in and was greeted with a smile. (That's always the best, isn't it?) As a non-jewelry maker I was amazed to see the different materials the beads were made of? Like; stone, pearl, metal, organic, glass, chrystal and one-of-a-kind flamework beads. WOWZA. Beads. Beads. Beads. Everywhere! Organized chaos of every color and from all over the world. There was eclectic jewelry for sale throughout the store-- which was made in house? I believe. Plus, an assortment of tools for jewelry making and other supplies. The staff appeared to be super knowledgeable, but I mean-- it's not like I'd have known :) The thing that really impressed me was just how passionate everyone I chatted with seemed. They were definite artists pumped to educate me on their craft. Classes are offered-- which I definitely need to hit up sometime. Wirework, stringing, knotting, flame-work, glass work, etc... Beginners and professionals are welcome! (Just be warned parking COULD be a concern at this location!) Overall, this rainbow store had a non judgey, creative vibe. And even thought I knew nothing, I felt ok coming in just to peruse while an obvious avid customer shopped along side me. I'll definitely come back for some custom accessories, perhaps a repair -- or a class!

All kiddos learn in different ways, at different speeds, at different times. Our first grader was…read morestruggling reading/writing and while his teacher did her best to get him to speed-- it just wasn't enough 1:1 time. If there was anything I learned from the pandemic it is that: A) I am not cut out to teach my children topics like spelling or math. Not because I don't have the desire to or the skills to-- but because I just don't have the patience to, unfortunately. It ultimately makes all parties involved upset and discouraged. And B) that it is ok to ask for help. We decided to let our son have a fun summer filled with summer camps, tons of swimming and baseball. But at the end, as second grade neared, we decided we needed to get him started with Sylvan Learning Center to be sure he wasn't left behind. It was super easy! We reached out via email and scheduled two different meetings. One was to drop off our son to do some tests to figure out where exactly he was in different subjects. The other was to sit down with the director of the center to discuss his test scores and what our path forward was. She provided options and didn't mandate we do anything. We then tailored our plan for this school year. (Tailored meaning: determining what subject(s) we wanted to focus on, how many hours a week we wanted to commit to, what days worked best for us and how we were going to pay.) Pricing is a bit steep but I think it is super standard for tutoring. You have to pay for 50 hours at a time, too. It definitely is an investment. The hours Sylvans are available (six days a week) are convenient. (In the summer they increase their hours and days without school they do as well.) Our son really enjoys going to Sylvans; I am thrilled he isn't embarrassed or that he doesn't dread his time there. I think that speaks volumes to the culture they have and the folks the employ. We have seen drastic improvement thus far-- both in his school work but also his desire/ability to read books on his own. Every so many weeks parents are brought in to discuss the improvement your kiddo has had so that everyone is on the same page and we can tailor our game plan as needed. Additionally, Sylvans stays in contact with our son's teacher so everyone is in the know. Ultimately, Sylvans has helped our son and given us a piece of mind. I'd 100% recommend it!
