I first met one of the owners (John) in college back in 2005, and ever since I've known him, he has had a huge passion for the martial arts, and BJJ in particular. He has a great knack for creating camaraderie, and is an open, inclusive personality, which you can feel through the rest of the members at the gym. I was only able to train there for a few weeks a few years back (shoulder injury), but the environment was terrific, as was the instruction. they also have muay thai, boxing, and wrestling, so you're definitely able to explore your passions. the three most important takeaways: 1. john is a guy who is completely trustworthy and is not out to play "gotcha" with pricing. he's completely transparent with his prices and doesn't hassle you if you want to cancel (though i don't see why you would. the prices are VERY reasonable considering the local competition. 2. the environment is great- friendly, but if you want to train seriously you'll have tons of opportunity. 3. the instructors are excellent at showing you technique and truly care if you are grasping the concepts they're teaching.

Looking for an experienced but welcoming BJJ gym? Seeking an effective high intensity workout?…read moreConvenient location in Chicago? The Chicago School of Grappling is a yes for all three. Having been a wrestler and jiujitsu practitioner for a number of years, I was very interested in the CSOG. I attended one of the JitFit sessions which is comprised of a circuit of high-intensity, jiujitsu-based exercises. The JitFit sessions are non-contact and fitness oriented, I feel they are well suited to beginners to advanced people trying to get fit, as well as men and women. I believe they have a kids session too. I enjoyed my session, having mainly been lifting the past few years, and the HIIT type session was helpful in addressing my cardio and goal of leaning up, while practicing fundamental jiujitsu maneuvers. The instructors are very experienced here, Nick and John (black and purple belts respectively), and can teach the spectrum of jiujitsu - from fitness enthusiast to advanced competitor. I highly recommend checking out the CSOG! I'm looking forward to my next session.

We've been coming here for 4 years and I watched my daughter go from crying in her first class at the age of 3, to now being a black belt and telling her friends she can't play because She's going to TKD. I had my son join Tae kwon Do so that he can learn how to defend himself. After paying $139 a month…read moreand an additional $60 every 2 months (to pay for the belt test, which did not make sense, whether they learn the kata's or not they give them the belt so the parents are PAYING for the belts instead of the kids EARNING THEM) i quickly noticed that the kids are not learning self defense. When i questioned Master Jung about this his response was that Tae Kwon Do was not for self defense but that he teaches self confidence within a kid and how to make them feel good about themselves. Well for $139 a month i can pat my son on the back and tell him he is great but that is not going to help should he get in a fight. The so called black belts looked as though they could not fight there way out of a paper bag. Making the kids FEEL GOOD is great but how are they going to feel when they find themselves in a place were they have to defend themselves and they get beat up! that burst of bubble will have the kids questioning everything else in there lives. When i sent the email that my son will no longer attend his dojo, i still got charged the following month, even though my son had not attended. I also received an email that i will be charged an additional month as they had a two month cancel policy. So they charge me $279 for a kid who is not even attending the school. Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art. It combines combat and self-defense techniques with sport and exercise. For a Master to tell me its NOT used for self defense but only for self confidence REALLY made my head spin. I took 2 years of karate in college and i learned more in my first month than my son did in the time he was at this school. If you want your kid to FEEL all warm and snuggly inside this is the school for them, but if you want your kid to actually LEARN something about SELF-DEFENSE then i would look else were. BYT when i asked about the 1980's trophy and if they actually do have sparring with other dojo's so that the kids can actually practice what they learned the master again said NO not really as that is not what they teach....REALLY! Very unhappy mom

I passed by several times, always reluctant to go in or learn more about this Taekwondo studio. Now…read morethat I've been attending classes for about a year, my only regret is that I didn't have the courage to check them out sooner. The instructors and students are a wonderful group of people. Beyond just teaching martial arts, they've helped me feel more confident and happy, welcoming me into their supportive community. I started with Saturday kickboxing--which was a lot of fun! --but I soon realized I wanted to go more often than once a week. I'm now working toward higher belts and attending two classes a week, which are about 45 minutes in length. The instructors are fantastic and incredibly welcoming. Having seen them work with both kids and adults, I'm impressed by the patience and respect they show everyone. Whether you are four or forty-something, I highly suggest stopping in for a class. I feel more physically fit, my mental health has improved, and I've also found a great group of people to spend my evenings with.

My son…read morestarted when he was 5 here and Master Washington helped turn around some pretty bad behavior traits. He started listening more and was way more respectful after having things reinforced at the school. Beyond just the behavior bonuses the training is top notch in TaeKwonDo, with my son winning both State and National Championships in 2013 in sparring and placing 3rd in both tournaments in forms. This year (2014) he took 2nd in Sparring at State, and 3rd in forms, with Nationals coming up in July. Another aspect is that he has made so many friends, that go beyond just the school. He regularly goes to his TKD friends houses for playdates, probably more so then the kids from his school. It is a no contract school which means you can pay month to month without being locked in. I think this is super important as a parent because why get locked into a contract if your kids do not like it after a month or so? Everything is very family oriented and Master Washington makes a personal connection with the kids in class, following up with how they are doing in school and other parts of their lives. Master Washington has a first class free policy so the kids can give it a try so you have nothing to lose for coming in and giving it a try!

Dhawan the owner at the downtown aurora dono, seems not too professional or motivated to welcome others in. My spouse had called about a month ago looking to start Karate, he is a amateur fighter, and just wanted to broadin his horizon in the art of fighting. My spouse was so optimistic to start Karate here, he had reached out via phone to be told to stop on in, and that we did. We wanted to right then and there make payment and set up when we would start coming into the dojo. Mr. Dhawan didn't seem so enthusiastic about having us start just yet and told us to wait two weeks when they come back from a tournament in Texas, which the date to start us in his dojo would be April 7th. We had called that day didn't receive a call back, my spouse then call today, again no answer. Since my spouse was excited to start our new journey drove in person to see the owner, there were a few parents waiting in the front room and session was at a end, there is NO SIGN that state DO NOT ENTER UNLESS etc..so my spouse walked in with payment in hand to see when we could start training..in response my partner was greeted with coldness anger and bitterness..in front of CHILDREN at that. no respect or honor. My man had to be the bigger person and walk away. He had $900 in hand for us to start there, looks like we will be going to Phantom kickboxing in Plainfield. Axel Arellano is a real multiple world champion professional fighter with honor and a code of discipline but he's also very soft and welcoming when it comes new people and hes the best in the area and we are happy to be there instead. Thank you for showing your true colors Dhawan.
