I went for an auctioninja pickup. Where is it? No CLUE! Her space is in a GIANT building, but you would never know according to the instructions or google maps, for that matter. "DOOR 1!!!DOOR 1!!!" She frantically says over the phone when I call her. She is annoyed, she does not sound well. I just want to pick up my damn auction win. Door 1? Is it a store? What am I looking for?? I am very polite. She isn't polite, very or otherwise. "IT IS A SHOP! A SHOP! A STORE FRONT. IT IS ON THE STREET" It is none of those things. It is in fact not a store, nor is it on the street. It is within an industrial building with many stores and many doors and many floors...where is Margot? Who the hell knows, except...blessings - some exhausted woman and her grandson are trying to pick up from this place, too. Frustrated...over it; they lead the way. And where do we go to? Upstairs. Go figure. Who knew?! Nicky's Attic is a hoarder's hellscape. Mess. No organization. Chaos Margot was sick as hell - does she have covid? Who the hell knows. She is Sneezing. coughing. wheezing. She is talking on her cell phone. She is VERY BUSY. Is she talking to her friend? It seems VERY IMPORTANT. She is BUSY. SNEEZING. WHEEZING. On the phone. Occupied. We are waiting. All four of us. "WHAT'S WRONG, ARE YOU OK???" She gets up in the guy's face, asking. He has been waiting there for ages, I imagine. He whispers, "good luck" to me as he carries out his box. I, along with the other strangers I am waiting with, are developing a new language via widening eyes and eyebrows being raised. Margo, deep in the room, yells "what are you picking up, what does it look like? Describe it!" WTAF. Well, after you try to describe what you have won via the blurry photos you bid on, she yells "OVER HERE! I FOUND IT. OVER HERE!!!!!" Great. You have to climb over piles of stuff to get your stuff. Then you try not to break your stuff or break your damn body as you exit the hoarders den. But, then, you tell the people, filling up the small cramped space, waiting to talk to sneezing coughing Margo. "GET OUT OF MY WAY OR I WILL ACCENTDENTLY BREAK MY BODY, YOU BODY, AND MY STUFF AS I TRY TO GET OUT OF THIS PLACE." The cycle goes on... Ugh. MY GOD. No. Thank. You.

Their store may be tucked away, nestled between Main Street and the train tracks, but it really is a friendly hub. I met Phyllis at the Valley Marketplace on the green in downtown Ansonia. My mom struck up a conversation with her and told her that we were having a hard time trying to consign our old clothes and she warmly welcomed us to come on over any time and she'll take any clothes as long as they're not too beaten up or stained. When I finally went there with bins and bags of clothes, they were so kind and took all but 3 items, which is a breath of fresh air after dealing with the uppity atmosphere at One More Tyme and Plato's Closet. Granted, not a lot of people who visit buy things, so don't get too butthurt if you go in after a couple of weeks and only have 25 cents in your account. This leads me to the absolute BEST thing about Barb's Corner: their huge hearts. Barb and Phyllis take more than just clothing, they also take household items, furniture, and even unopen packs of diapers and adult disposable underwear. If you're someone who's hurting and hard up for money, they might even cut you a break on the price, which is totally unheard of in this dog eat dog world where everyone just wants to make a buck. However, please don't abuse their kindness since they need every dollar they get, as do the consigners. Even if you've got a heart of stone, it's hard not to like this quaint shop and their great prices. I got a brand new pair of shorts with the KMart tag and everything still on them, here for $2.50! All in all, this place is wonderful to visit, even if you are just feeling lonely and need someone to talk to. The only downside, and it's not that big of a deal, is that it tends to get a bit cramped what with all of the stuff they take. So, just keep on your toes and you should be golden.

Anyway, as soon as we got there I let my wife out of the car and told her I was going to go buy some crap at the nearest Goodwill. She was a little disappointed, but by now she's used to that. So I ended up at this Goodwill in Shelton and I have to say, I was a bit disappointed as well. While most of these little factory towns in the Naugatuck Valley had a decidedly rundown rustbelt vibe to them, this Goodwill was located in a big splashy new shopping center with those corny fake facades and the interior was brightly lit, nice-smelling and overall pretty clean. Right off the bat, none of this does anything for me. But I press on. As far as the goods are concerned, this place is on par with any of the other countless Goodwill's around Connecticut, which means mostly newer, boring clothing - fleeces, khakis and checkered shirts for the men and Walmart tops and endless aisles of bland "coatigan"-type thingies for the women. You will also find a few racks of housewares items which consist of mostly damaged dishware, Boyd's Bears figurines and generic wall art. The media selection will contain tons of not very good books and CDs and a smaller amount of really not very good records. However, today I got lucky and I scored two old plaid blazers, a couple pairs of sunglasses and a giant 6XL 3D-printed shirt with a rooster holding a machine gun. Turns out the blazers had been feasted upon by moths or weevils or some other blazer-eating insects and the sunglasses were prescription, but the 6XL rooster shirt? That is simply pure perfection! Now, my wife puts up with a lot, but ditching her friends at a winery so I could pay ten bucks for a very large man's rooster shirt, might be a bridge too far so I smuggled that one home to make an appearance at some future date to be determined.
