I'm so disappointed that I must give this gallery ONE star. I would have given none of that was an option. The owner was incredibly rude upon our entrance into the gallery. She was sitting in the back and took a few seconds to come up to greet us. Immediately told us that where we were standing is where the gallery ends. Okay, no problem. A sign or polite explanation would have been nice, but oh well. Being a dog lover and an owner of a golden retriever is what led us to the gallery. We made a special trip back to town when it was open because we were so eager to hear the story of the dog(s) and possibly buy a print, painting, or book. Even after being rudely greeted, I felt compelled to ask about the dogs. The owner was very abrupt and said she was not feeling well and did not want to talk about the dogs, but she was willing to discuss pricing. Hmmm, not much for small talk, I get that, but humor me and engage in a conversation. It was at that moment, I knew I would not purchase anything and support such an arrogant small business owner (believe me, I always try to shop small business). Trying to be polite while leaving, I said, "You're work is beautiful. You must really love your dogs." The response I received was what prompted me to write this review. She said, "Well, I love art. My art comes first. My dogs are secondary." For those who don't like dogs, I get that this may seem a bit rough on my part, but you own a gallery called Yellow Dog, and you paint and take pictures of dogs. You need to expect people to want to talk about DOGS and the inspiration for your work. Make it up if you have to. I don't see this gallery lasting long with the lack of interpersonal skills of the owner and her unwillingness to discuss the story behind her art. Too bad. read more

Being dog lovers, my boyfriend and I were instantly drawn to the yellow dog gallery when visiting Martha's Vineyard. Immediately upon entering, you are greeted by a strong odor of a wet dog, which was the best part of the gallery due to it's indication of a dog's presence. However, the mood was quickly brought down when a woman hobbled in off the street demanding that my boyfriend put his camera (phone) away while shouting that everything in her gallery (apparently) was "copywrited." He apologized and complied with her wishes. Before we could ask her anything about the gallery, an adorable and charming golden retriever popped up with it's paws on the counter as if he was ready to help us. I was delighted and asked the pup if he worked there. To which the owner of the gallery responded no, and in fact he shouldn't be up there. She also asked us not to pet him as it would "only encourage him." Due to her abrasive personality and poor attitude toward animals and her customers, I then stated to my boyfriend that I thought we should leave. She, however, got the last word as she said, "Yeah. Because I'm not selling dogs." As my boyfriend quickly ushered me out the door. She undoubtedly doesn't sell any art either since she verbally assaults any potential customers that enter her "gallery" to then follow through by chasing them back out the door. read more

I give this gallery 3 stars for the art, not for the owner/artist. A few of her pieces were actually gorgeous. A couple looked like a child painted it. The problem hubby & I had was twofold: her absolutely RIDICULOUS prices ($24,000!! for the one I loved) & her haughty attitude. She seemed quite put out that we didn't "know of her art & books" already & the gallery smelled strongly of dog also. She said she has no website or business cards. I got the impression that she thought those were "above her." read more

I loved meeting Debby and hearing the stories of her dogs and her art. I purchased a piece, just had it framed and look forward to having as a focal piece in my house. read more

This is for the oak bluffs store. I have a yellow lab so I wanted to take a picture to send to my girlfriend to see if she liked the painting, but I was rudely yelled at for taking a photo (there are no signs saying no photos allowed on the door or anywhere that I could see). I initially couldn't hear the lady (I'm assuming it was the owner)because of a truck going by and her wall of paintings was blocking my view of her yelling at me. Another customer even told the owner that there was no need for yelling at me. I was completely caught off guard and dumbfounded that this was even happening. I apologized and she demanded (pointing at my phone) to delete the picture to ensure I actually deleted it. I'm never returning to this gallery and I have a house on the vineyard and I have been visiting MV for over 20 years and this has never happened. Don't buy her paintings!! read more

Such tremendous soulful art by a multi-talented owner. I've visited the gallery each summer for 10 years. While Yellow Dog has changed location, most recently to Edgartown, each visit was memorable with greeting from Debby the artist and owner and her tremendous dogs. Unlike the previous reviews, my experiences have been 100% the opposite. Debby adores her dogs and while visiting, I've heard her speak to other patrons who come in and share their experiences as dog owners. The dogs are always with her. She's compassionate talking about these beloved creatures and clearly adores them with all her heart. What beautiful animals. Admittedly, it seems many people visit just to pat the dog and not to explore the art which is too bad because it's clear she throws her heart into her work. The entire vibe of the gallery exudes that. I can respect not wanting passers by to take photos of this art because it is intellectual and creative property. Patrons should see some of her amazing photographs of sailboats from Martha's Vineyard and horses from Carmel. Her work is not limited to paintings and photographs of her beloved dogs. Too often people write when they are angry, I've witnessed and heard many with positive experiences at this gallery. I have two of her beautiful sailboat photographs in my home and everyone who comes in remarks at how incredible they are. read more
